And the Survey Says…

Carrie Thielemann

The suggestion to survey the Central Bluegrass Community was presented at the March board

meeting. I agreed to draft a set of questions; the meeting attendees provided their email ad-

dresses and agreed to review the test survey and provide feedback. Turned out that creating the

survey was a snap using the online survey tool, Survey Monkey, that Tom Duplissey suggested

and over a half dozen questions that Eddie Collins sent for consideration. A test survey was cre-

ated and the link was sent to the test team. The feedback and suggested changes provided by

the testers was incorporated and the final eight question survey was opened for responses be-

tween April 15th and May 26th. Notification was sent to all members with an email address on

file and was sent out to the members of the CTBA Facebook group. Friends and members of

CTBA also forwarded the link to folks in the Central Texas area known to have an interest in

bluegrass. Finally, members without email were telephoned and their responses manually en-

tered. We received 112 responses to the survey and nearly half the current members responded.

The answers to the specific survey questions are summarized in the charts that follow. The

CTBA board members are reviewing the comments and suggestions submitted, which are too

numerous to include in the newsletter. Thank you once again to (continued on next page)

From the historical photo archive: jamming at St. Michael’s. The very first CTBA jam was located at St.

Michael’s Episcopal Church, on Bee Caves Road in Westlake Hills. This photo is undated but I believe

dates from 1978. Right, Tom Ellis; center, Wayne Ross; left, two unidentified pickers. Hey, Tom, isn’t

that a vintage Ellis mandolin you’re picking? Where’d you get that thing? Photo by Ken Brown.

New World Deli “Bluegrass Open Mike”

Eddie Collins

Eddie Collins and Tom Duplissey hosted the first of an on-going series of ―Bluegrass Open

Mike" nights on June 11th at the New World Deli, (4101 Guadalupe in Austin). Sam Dunn was

the first performer, adding his banjo to "Grandfather's Clock." Several attendees had just re-

turned from the Hill Country Acoustic Music camp, so four banjos showed what they learned

by performing a spirited version of "Smoke on the Water" together.

An open mike is different from a jam session in that participants take turns performing for one

another. Pickers who wish to pick and/or sing a tune or two can join Eddie and Tom, or perform

on their own. The format helps pickers of all levels improve their skills in playing before an

encouraging live audience. The next Bluegrass Open Mike night at the New World Deli will be

Thursday, July 9th; 6:30 - 8:30 PM. Come and pick, or just root for your fellow pickers. The

delicatessen < www.newworlddeli.com> has great food and is just north of the drag and UT

campus. Contact Eddie Collins < [email protected]> if you have questions.

Russ Barenberg House Concert, March 21

About 40 people gathered in Joe McColley’s living room on a warm Saturday evening in Sha-

vano Park to hear Russ Barenberg (nominated last year for a Grammy in the Best Country In-

strumental category for his recording of ―Little Monk,‖ as well as for IBMA Instrumental Al-

bum of the Year) run through two 45-minute solo sets of guitar and mandolin tunes. Most of us

are probably familiar with Russ from his playing with Laurie Lewis, or with Jerry Douglas and

Edgar Meyer on the ―Skip, Hop and Wobble‖ album, or from his array of instructional material.

Barenberg has done a lot of touring and traveling, and it’s reflected in his choice of material for

the flatpicking palette. Many of the tunes were drawn from Skip, Hop and Wobble or from his

most recent solo projects, Moving Pictures and When at Last, but they covered terrain from

Cape Breton fiddle tunes, to Swedish walking tunes, Scottish airs, and New England con-

tradance tunes (like Lady Walpole’s Reel). Some of my favorites were the Benny Thomasson

waltz, Midnight on the Water, and of course Big Bug Shuffle and Big Sciota. Russ played a vin-

tage mandolin as well as his 1945-vintage Gibson J-45 flat top guitar with maple back and

sides. Joe McColley, a superb flatpicker in his own right, sponsors these house concerts from

time to time. He’s finished for the summer season, but stay tuned for more good music with a

flatpicking bias.
