How does IB work?

11/17/2015 3

• Students choose any number of IB subjects of

interest/strength. Most students choose between 2

and 6 IB subjects

• In order to be considered a full IB diploma candidate,

students must take 6 IB subjects plus additional

requirements

• All IB classes are taught over 2 years

• Majority of the grade comes from externally written

and graded examinations at end of senior year,

although all subjects have an Internal Assessment

component (IA)

• Each academic subject is scored from 1-7

Do all of our students take IB?

11/17/2015 4

• We encourage all students to take some IB subjects

• There are 2 ways that students can take IB:

(a) Selection of individual IB subjects mixed with non-IB

subjects: “individual IB subject candidate”

(b) Full IB diploma: “full IB diploma candidate”

Difference Between

HL/SL courses

11/17/2015 6

• HL = Higher Level, SL = Standard Level

• Generally HL subjects have a larger and more in depth curriculum than

SL subjects

• All of our levels of subjects are currently taught over 2 years

• Language acquisition classes and Math classes are taught in leveled

classes, whereas most other subjects are taught in mixed classes and

differentiated

• Students will be placed in Language and Math classes depending on

their level at the start of the course, whereas all of the other subject

levels will not need to be decided upon until the end of the 2nd semester

of the junior year

• Students working toward the full IB diploma will need to make sure

that they can test in 3 subjects at HL and 3 at SL

• Individual IB subject candidates can do any combination of SL/HL

Page 7: An Introduction to The Village School IB Program · PDF file• IB Biology HL2 • IB Math SL2 ... 3 2 2 1 Failing condition Failing condition ... families to learn more about the

Additional requirements of

full IB Diploma students

11/17/2015 7

• Creativity, Activity and Service (CAS)

• Extended Essay (EE)

• Theory of Knowledge (TOK)

• 3 subjects are tested at Higher Level (HL) and

3 at Standard Level (SL)

• Students must gain a minimum of 24 points

combined to pass (with certain other

“passing conditions”)

11/17/2015 12

• Internal Assessments (IA’s) are completed mostly in the

senior year, internally graded, then moderated by IB

examiners

• Externally written final exams are taken in May of the

senior year and are externally graded

• Subject scores are awarded on a 1-7 scale

• Additional points (3 max) for the TOK and EE combined

(full diploma students only) – see matrix on next slide

• A student taking full IB diploma can earn a maximum 45

How do Colleges/Universities

recognize IB?

11/17/2015 15

• Colleges recognize the rigor and preparation that

the IB program provides. It improves a student’s

chance of getting in to college

• Points in IB subjects can give students college

credit. E.g. University of Texas will give a minimum

of 24 credit hours for successful IB Diploma

students

• For students wanting access to university

internationally, admission can depend on their IB

score
