About Starfish

When was Starfish Greathearts Foundation formed?

The Starfish Greathearts Foundation was founded in the UK in 2001, by a group of ex-

pat South African friends who wanted to make a difference to the lives of children orphaned

or made vulnerable through the HIV/AIDS pandemic in South Africa. They started out by

raising funds to make memory bags for orphans in Kwazulu-Natal. In 2002 two of the

friends, Anthony Farr and Tracey Webster, returned to South Africa to formally establish

Starfish Greathearts Foundation in South Africa and registered the Foundation as a section 21

company (2003/002865/08).

FACT # 1

How many orphaned children are there in South Africa?

Approximately 21% of the country’s 18.5 million children are affected by HIV, with over

2 million children left orphaned, with the number of children with neither a mother nor father having more than doubled since 2002.

60% of children are living in poverty where the monthly per capita income is less than R575.

(The South African Child Gauge 2012).

FACT # 2

What is Starfish Greathearts Foundation’s value proposition?

Starfish exists to support children orphaned or made vulnerable throughout South Africa by

strengthening community-based responses to provide basic services to the children they

support. Starfish forms a vital link between donors and these organisations and aims to mobilise and

inspire a global community to make a difference … one child at a time.
