The Source of All Forgiveness
In his 1622 painting The Penitent St. Mary
Magdalene, Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, known as
Guercino, portrays Mary Magdalene with shoulders
uncovered and disheveled hair. These details remind us
of her shameful past without defining her present.
Rather, it is her humble, penitent spirit from which her
heroic love for Jesus springs. The sinful Mary, who had
been forgiven so much, is also one who has loved much.
One angel holds out before her the symbols of the
passion to remind Magdalene of
the ransom her Beloved paid to
set her free from sin. A second
angel pointing to heaven reminds
her that these nails no longer
bind him. Or as the angel would
tell Mary Magdalene in the
garden, “He is not here, he has
risen.”
Many mistakenly conflate
Mary Magdalene with the unknown woman from Luke
7:36–50. The woman offers an act of humility by
breaking into the dinner party of Simon and sobbing over
the feet of Jesus. She bathes his feet with tears of
repentance and dries them with her lovely hair. Despite
the confusion, we admire this woman’s and Mary’s
humility. Neither were too proud to repent.
The painting is called The Penitent St. Mary
Magdalene because Mary looks purposely like a person
kneeling in confession. Speaking with head downcast,
she admits her failures. And as in confession, the
representative of God sits on the other side encouraging
her to consider Jesus’ passion, love, and mercy. The
angel in the center reminds Mary to whom she is really
confessing. By pointing to heaven we are all reminded of
the source from whom all forgiveness comes.

peregrinaciones a Santiago.

Thinking about joining the Catholic Church, attending Mass but feel a little lost? The RCIA inquiry
stage is the starting place for adults who are thinking about entering the Catholic Church or desiring to
complete the Sacraments of Initiation. In the inquiry stage, you’re finding out about Jesus, Christianity,
and the Catholic Church. As an inquirer this is the period where you ask questions about the Catholic
Church and the Sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation. Your main objective here is to
develop your faith, get to know Christ, prayer, the Catholic Church, and how Christians live. This the
best way to make an informed decision about entering the Catholic Church. Have you received the
Sacrament of Confirmation? Just as bodies and minds grow, Catholics believe that the soul also needs to grow in the life
of grace. The Sacrament of Confirmation builds on the sacraments of Baptism, Reconciliation and Holy Communion,
completing the process of initiation into the Catholic community. Want to hear more? Meet with Deacon Mike Smigelski
and RCIA team members after the 9am and 11am Masses on July 29
th
in the St. Augustine Room in St. Gregory the
Great Church. Questions, please call

PARISH LIFE CENTER UPDATE
HOORAY! After a few months of preparation while moving our sewage system and preparing the soil, the
plumbing, electrical, and other underground systems were roughed in for the Parish Life Center. This made way
for the front half of the slab to be poured in the early morning hours Tuesday, July 10. The crew began at 2:00
a.m. in the cooler weather to help slow the curing of the concrete. The photos included here were taken at 6:30
a.m. when they were almost finished. It was a beautiful morning!
The next step is to begin the erection of steel. Be on the lookout for multiple large forklifts that will be used to
move the steel around and place it properly. Once the front section is completed, the rear portion of the slab will
be poured and steel erected in that area. You will be seeing lots of changes week by week now!
We will keep you updated through the bulletin, but feel free to contact Suzette Greiner at the Parish office if you
have any questions.

From time to time we like to share with you some of the ways you
are helping real people through your generous support of the Deacon
Thomas J. Berney Conference of the St. Vincent DePaul Society here
at St. Gregory the Great Parish. Here are two brief reports. When
each of these requests for assistance came to our help line, two visitors went to the client’s home, prayed with them
and listened to their stories. Here is what happened next.
A family got into difficulty after the last hurricane evacuation because the husband and wife each lost a
week’s pay. They hadn’t been able to catch up. One of their children will soon be having surgery at MUSC, and the
mother will need to provide care so she will be unable to work for a while. Bluffton Self Help agreed to cover their
mortgage arears, and we agreed to cover two months of car payments. They are confident they can take it from
here.
Another young woman called us after her husband abandoned her and their children. She has a medical
condition and has applied for Social Security disability, as well as assistance from other agencies. After thoroughly
investigating the situation, we agreed to catch up on her rent, thereby avoiding eviction. She was also behind on
her car payments and we agreed to bring her car current. She expects to begin receiving alimony and child support
soon. She has been cleared for assistance from Bluffton Sell Help. If necessary, she will ask them to cover next
month’s rent and car payment. She was very grateful for our help.
In Monsignor Cellini’s address to the students graduating from JPII, he told them that the most important
legacy people of faith can leave is what they have done for Christ in the least of his brothers and sisters. These are
some examples of how, with your support, we are able to follow the Monsignor’s lead and answer the Gospel call to
love our neighbor.
If you would like to learn more about how we help the poor, you are welcome to come to any of our
meetings, generally held on the 1
