Quit Grumbling!

Grumbling is terrible. It spreads discontent,

discouragement, a negative spirit. It tells others you are

unhappy and tries to drag them down. The Israelites

grumbled against Moses and,

indirectly, against God. He had taken

them from slavery, yes, but led them

into the desert with poor food and

continual wanderings. At least as

slaves they had food to eat and knew

where they were. The devil can also

trick us into believing that Jesus has

done us no favors in saving us from

the slavery of sin and feeding us with

the gospel as we wander after his will.

Jesus faces this shortsightedness.

After he multiplies the bread and feeds

the people, they follow him—but not

because they want to convert and

begin living the life of generosity. They

follow him because they got their fill.

They want a God that satisfies and

takes care of them. They want a credit-card God, an

unending source of funds to bail them out—not a God

who offers salvation through conversion and generosity.

It is common to want a God who obeys us and not the

other way around. Saint Jerome went into the desert,

just like the Egyptians, to learn this lesson of humble

obedience. Rather than grumble, he prayed for

conversion. He learned that there is no doubt Jesus

gives us all we could need, but we must expand our

hearts and minds to receive it. Conversion is stretching

our limits to the bountiful measure of God rather than

grumbling and shrinking him to our miserly standards.

1726, Fray Antonio

Margil de Jesús, el

fundador de las misiones

en Texas dijo "Ya es

hora de ir a ver a Dios" y

tomó su último paso.

Desde su llegada a

América en 1683 el

indomable Hermano

Menor trazó caminos

para llevar el Evangelio

de Jesucristo a los

nativos.

instrumento.

GOD’S WORK

We are so busy! Most of us have more than one job to do, and we never seem to have enough time. We are

workers, volunteers, parents, friends, and most of us are more than one thing at a time. But which of these is the

work of God?

We seldom view our ordinary work as being the work of God. We may think that we have to be ministers or

priests, missionaries or charity workers, engaged full-time in works formally identified as being “God’s work.” But

everything we do with a faithful heart and with love for others is God’s work. We each have our own role to fill in

the world, and many gifts are necessary. We cannot always see the direct connection of our daily work to the plan

of God. But we trust and we believe that God leads us to do what is needed, where it is needed. What is “God’s

work?” “This is the work of God, that you believe in the one he sent” (John 6:29).

BIG TERMS A ‘QUANTITATIVE’, ‘QUALITATIVE’

‘Quantitative’ S something that can be measured, has dimensions etc; ‘Qualitative’ S something that is

intangible, no measurable dimensions. Now what ???

One should avoid the temptation to make judgments about the depth of another’s faith by the ability of the person to

‘write a book’, in theological terms, explaining so profound a mystery accepted in faith. God infuses this great gift –

FAITH – in the heart of the believer who, for lack of the ability to write a thesis on the mystery, fully accepts the

Presence of God in faith. On the other hand, it is conceivable that someone is well-qualified, through theological

studies, to write a ‘book’ on some particular faith-issue but (God forbid!) does not live the faith. By the same token, such

a person has the obligation to flesh out the mysteries with the gift of being able to apply the logic of the human mind to

enhance the depth of faith in God’s loving Presence in the heart that believes.

With much love, Father Derrick

How Lovely is Your Dwelling Place, O Lord of Hosts - Psalm 84

The mission of the Saint Gregory the Great Flower Guild is to prepare a “lovely” place for our worship

of the Lord, throughout the year and during the special seasons of the church calendar. Yes, flower

arranging is one of the things our members do, and if you have some skill in this, we could really use

your help. But just as important are the members who water the flowers and plants throughout the week

and clear the previous week’s flowers for the new ones. If you could help us in either of these ways, we

would be happy to have you. We are a friendly and welcoming group of men and women. If you’re new

to the parish, this is an easy way to get to know some of your fellow parishioners. For a personal meeting with one or

two of our team members who can explain our work in further detail, please contact

Laurie Niederer at 843-757-1290 or [email protected].
