Gifts to Be Shared
The multiplication of the loaves and fish is a scene
commonly sculpted on the tombs of Christians in Rome.
These early Christians, an ocean away, not only heard
the story but believed it and sealed their lives with it.
What powerful message of life and death did they find?
Aside from being a symbol of the Eucharist, the
center of early Christian worship then as today, this
miracle is a call to generosity. By giving your life to
Jesus, he can multiply it and raise it up to new life.
Jesus sees the hunger of the crowd and wants to satisfy
them. He asks what provisions they have, and all they
can muster is two fish and five loaves. Andrew questions
what good that is for so many. Implicit is that it may be
better to save what little there is for themselves.
Jesus sees things differently. He gives thanks for the
little they have and has the apostles give it away. He
knows the Father will multiply this generosity. Rather
than look at what they have as a scarcity of goods, he
sees them as gifts to share. This is the radical change of
heart that Jesus asks of us. Everything we have is a gift
to be shared. When we live in love, and not in selfish fear
of how to satisfy ourselves, then God multiplies what little
we have and provides everything we need.
When the Gospel declares the apostles had collected
twelve baskets of leftovers, the text shouts that God is a
God of abundance, not of scarcity.

ADORACIÓN
MILAGRO SEMANAL

consagrado a Dios.

WEEKLY MIRACLE
This week marks the beginning of a kind of “liturgical detour.” We have been listening to Saint Mark’s Gospel
during this liturgical year (Year B). Today we begin to hear a long section from John’s Gospel, starting with the
miracle of the multiplication of the loaves and fishes. This miracle story is a prelude to the Lord’s statements that
we will begin hearing in a few weeks, in which Jesus refers to himself as the “bread of life.” Each week we witness
a miracle at Mass. We do not see a multiplication of loaves before us. What our eyes of faith allow us to see is the
miracle of the transformation of common elements—bread and wine—into the Lord’s Body and Blood. Once we
have received the Lord, the multiplication begins, for in the Eucharist we are strengthened to multiply our efforts to
feed the poor, shelter the homeless, and bring comfort to the despairing.

The Saint Gregory the Great Catholic School garden is beginning to take shape! At the end of the school
year, all students participated in a final planting with anticipation of the blessings that would emerge over
the summer. Their prayers are being heard as our little luffa plants are climbing the trellises designed by
our SGGCS students, and bright yellow flowers are beginning to appear. With hard work and prayers, we
should see some luffa sponge gourds begin to appear. After harvest in late fall, students will use the
STREAM process to create a sustainable luffa sponge gourd soap business. During the winter months,
students will experiment with soap recipes and packaging designs, develop a marketing plan, and prepare
to sell their product to the Farmers Market of Bluffton in the spring.

Initiation of Adults
Thinking about joining the Catholic
Church, attending Mass but feel a little
lost? The RCIA inquiry stage is the
starting place for adults who are
thinking about entering the Catholic Church or desiring to
complete the Sacraments of Initiation. In the inquiry
stage, you’re finding out about Jesus, Christianity, and
the Catholic Church. As an inquirer this is the period
where you ask questions about the Catholic Church and
the Sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation.
Your main objective here is to develop your faith, get to
know Christ, prayer, the Catholic Church, and how
Christians live. This the best way to make an informed
decision about entering the Catholic Church. Have you
received the Sacrament of Confirmation? Just as bodies
and minds grow, Catholics believe that the soul also
needs to grow in the life of grace. The Sacrament of
Confirmation builds on the sacraments of Baptism,
Reconciliation and Holy Communion, completing the
process of initiation into the Catholic community. Want to
hear more? Meet with Deacon Mike Smigelski and RCIA
team members after the 9am and 11am Masses on July
