My Dear Parishioners,
I am writing this column on the morning
after our annual Advent Gift Giving Mass.
The feeling of joy and appreciation for all of
you is still in my heart. Despite heavy rain
pouring down, several families from our
parish came with their arms full of
beautifully wrapped presents last night.
Many of you who could not attend dropped
off presents in the last row of the church, during the day. At
least four new bicycles were among the gifts!
You know, very often
when we give to charity,
we just trust that our gift
will get directly into the
hands of the truly needy.
After talking to Fr. Gus
Puleo, the pastor of St.
Patrick's, we should all
feel content in knowing
that he will personally
make sure that our generosity will be extended to the poorest of
the poor in his Hispanic Catholic community. Fr. Puleo said,
"I only wish you could see the faces of the children who,
because of our gifts, will now enjoy a joyful Christmas." As Fr.
Puleo and I remarked together: "This is the Catholic Church at
its best."
As we enter the Second week of Advent and we all get
serious about placing on our calendar what parties, shopping,
school plays we will attend, may I urge you to also mark down
when you will go to confession. If I dare to speak for Jesus, if
you want to know what Jesus wants from you for His birthday,
it is your heart opened up to Him in a good confession. Next
week, I will publish our usual Examination of Conscience,
which always helps us to take that inner look into our heart. On
page 6 of today's bulletin, is a list of all the confession times
throughout the various parishes of our area. Make an
appointment, it may be the best celebration you will attend this
holiday season.
Finally, I want to announce that I recently received a letter
from the Chairman of the Board and the President of St. Mary
Medical Center, re-appointing me as a member of the Board
of Directors of the hospital, as of January 17, 2017. I had
previously served nine years on the board, and then according
to bylaws, I was required to go off of the board for two years.
With this re-appointment I recommit myself to help insure that
St. Mary Medical Center, as its mission statement declares,
"continues the healing ministry of Jesus Christ."
May God Bless You,
St. Bede 103 December 4, 2016

Scripture Readings
Third Sunday of Advent December 11, 2016 Isaiah 35: 1-6a, 10
Psalm 146
James 5: 7-10
Matthew 11: 2-11 Our readings are filled with signs. Isaiah speaks of the
signs of God’s reign to come, and in the Gospel we hear
Jesus compare His deeds with the well-known signs of the
Messianic Kingdom, the time when the Messiah would
appear. John the Baptist would know those signs and
recognize Jesus as indeed the one who is to come. Saint Paul
speaks of the signs that farmers await for the growth of their
plantings. By what signs to we know that God is present in
our world today?

During the month of December, our
school’s theme is the virtue of patience. We
have all heard of the common saying that
“patience is a virtue” while it tends to be one
of the most challenging virtues. During this
season of Advent, we challenge our students
to practice this important virtue. We are
called to prepare our hearts and souls for the
coming of Christ. We can so easily be distracted by holiday
festivities and preparations that we fail to wait with patience
and joy.
As we pray about the coming of Christ, let us hear and re-
spond to the Church’s call to stand apart from all the Christmas
festivities so that we might remain alert—patiently, prayerfully
watching and waiting for his coming. May God bless you and
your family during this holy season!

Hello Everyone! Seeing so many of our young adults who were home from College the last two weeks brought to mind an article I read recently that cited a study which showed that there are three factors which play a major part in young people staying a part of the Church/ their Faith. The writer, Fr. Matthew P. Schneider, LC writes: If a teen experiences
Jesus in their friends (weekly group), in prayer and the Eucharist, and in adults they can talk to; then, they’ll commit to the Church.
Of course we all know that parents are the MOST important and most influential persons in a child’s life. These three factors actually support what is lived out at home. My role and actually the role of the entire parish (yes, we are all Youth Ministers to the youth of the parish) is to reinforce the Catholic values that are taught in the home. These three factors are offered to our youth constantly at St. Bede. I’ll use Father Schneider words with my added emphasis afterwards
First, we have the group or the community where they come together on a regular basis to learn their faith. Second, we have the prayer and ser-vice which really brings teens out of themselves to have those experi-ences. Third, we have the intergenerational aspect ….which really inte-grates the youth ministry into the entire ministry of the church These factors are evident here at St. Bede in 1) the coming together of youth at CCD or for those in High School, the Triple T gatherings. 2) the many Liturgical, para-liturgical and prayer gatherings including Sunday Mass, 40 Hours, Missions, Family Adoration nights, and retreats like Kairos and Steu-benville youth conferences. 3) the number of teens involved in the life of the parish: like those who serve on the Teen Council, in the Teen Choir, as Asst. Coaches or refs in CYO, as Asst. Catechists in the CCD classrooms, those in other ministries and who we see in all aspects of parish life. As you can see, our youth have many opportunities for these three factors to draw them into a deeper commitment to the Church and their Faith. It is not just one factor but
rather a collaboration of all three along with our prayers for our children (Like St. Monica, who prayed many, many years for her son Augustine) that will surely lead our youth to eternity with our Heavenly Father. Here is the link to the article, Please take a moment to read it and let me know your thoughts. Please continue to remember us in your prayers. God Bless! http://projectym.com/3-things-that-almost-guarantee-teens-stay-catholic/ To get information about the Youth Ministry programs and events, visit our website st-bede.org/youthministry or call the Youth Ministry office at 215-357-5113.
