“Do not rebuke an older man, but exhort him as a father…”

What Does This Mean?

•Paul is writing to Timothy, a younger preacher.

•This does NOT mean that Timothy can never preach about issues facing older people.

•It also does NOT mean that, if he sees an older man sinning, he should just excuse it.

•It DOES mean that he should give proper respect to older Christians.

“…younger men as

brothers.”

Meaning…?•Timothy needs to

remember that he is younger, too.

•Don’t “gang up” on younger brothers (or sisters) in Christ just

because you are “the preacher.”

•Treat them like family (because you ARE

family!).

Respect Should be Shown…

From children toward parents (Exodus 20:12; Ephesians 6:1-3).

Between husbands and wives (Ephesians 5:22; First Peter 3:1,7).

From citizens toward the government (Romans 13:1-7; First Peter 2:13-16).

From members toward elders (Hebrews 13:17).

From Christians to ALL PEOPLE! (First Peter 2:17)

Where Do Young People First Learn about Respect?

IN THE HOME!

Yes, this IS a lesson about honoring your parents!!!

Accepting Their Authority

•Do what your parents desire…

•Willfully

•Pleasantly

•Lovingly

•Immediately

Why?

•They take care of you!

•To follow the example of Jesus (Luke 2:51)

•It pleases God (Colossians 3:20).

•To gain long life (Ephesians 6:1-3)

•To avoid horrible sin (Romans 1:28-31; Second Timothy 3:1-5)

Appreciating Their Love

“As children become teenagers, their relationship with parents change. It changes from one of total dependence on parents to one of wanting to be free of them. You begin to think that you are smarter than your parents and you take them for granted. This is when many young people become very disrespectful.” (page 52)

Think of…

•The sacrifice of bring you into the world (emotionally, financially, etc.)

•The financial sacrifice of raising you (from birth through college now costs approximately $300,000-$500,000).

•The time they give you.

•The memories they help you make.

•The experiences and contacts they give you.

•THE SPIRITUAL TRAINING THEY GIVE YOU!

Attending to Their Needs

“Social Security, Medicare and old age pensions are good, but no system can honor your parents for you.” (page 53)

Attending to Their Needs

•First Timothy 5:4

•Matthew 15:3-5, 9

•Jesus practiced what He taught (John 19:27).

•Only humans care for the old; animals only care for the young.
