Dear Chamber Friend,It is a pleasure to be a part of an organization dedicated to its mission, to promote

prosperity and growth in Rome and Floyd County for and through its business memberships. During the course of the year we will continue to highlight this mission along with focusing on education, community marketing and more. Each month we will highlight our accomplishments through our faithful members of the Chamber. We will highlight our “Mom & Pop” businesses, entrepreneurship, small businesses, healthcare, economic development, manufacturing and so much more. Mr. Jimmy Turner, owner of the Pick O’ Deli cafeteria, has lived in Rome since his parents moved to town when he was two. Mr. Turner’s dad opened Pick O’ Deli in 1982 and at that time, the business ran just like a typical deli. In 1986, Mr. Jimmy Turner bought the restaurant and after trying out different combinations of cold and hot food, he decided on keeping it hot with Southern comfort foods like country fried steak, fried chicken, and vegetables. At this restaurant, your food is served cafeteria style, you get to pick exactly what you want to fill up your plate.What makes Pick O’ Deli unique

“We try to use the freshest ingredients possible,” said Mr. Turner. “We are also a very casual restaurant, no suit or tie required to eat here. We are unique in being one of the only cafeteria-style places around here. It’s like a family here, so many regulars have come here for years.”

The restaurant industry can provide many challenges, but Mr. Turner has loved being the owner of Pick O’ Deli. “No day is really the same when you run a restaurant. Even though the place may not change, the people do. There is always something different happening, I like that challenge and I also like meeting all the different people. It’s also nice seeing our regulars!” Pick O’ Deli is a family run business and Mr. Turner says he has seen some

of the same people for 10, 15, and even 20 years. “When I am able to be here in the restaurant, it is always a joy to see regulars walk in the cafeteria. We had one guy who used to come twice every day. He ate every meal here except for Sunday evening when we aren’t open for dinner.” The Holiday Seasons“I love the Holiday season, it is busy! Because we are a family

business and we like to give back to the community, we like to do something special for our customers during the Holiday season. We are closed on Thanksgiving Day but the day before that, we have what we call the ‘pick-up’ day. We offer – family size – vegetables and everything that you can have during a traditional Thanksgiving. If families cook their own dinner but would like to order dressing, we offer the supplemental dressing, the green

beans and the corn. We also have sliced ham and turkey. We have everything except for the whole bird! We have regulars who have called in for Thanksgiving dinners year after year.”

Business EXPO 2014

It’s not a job fair, and you don’t need to be a business owner to get in; with food, fun and prizes Business EXPO is a chance for you to

see the best of what Rome has to offer!

All Seasons: ShopRomesm

Business EXPO is a yearly marketing event presented by the Greater Rome Chamber of Commerce. It is an opportunity for both small and large businesses to network with each other as well as the public. Each year has a theme (this year’s theme is All Seasons ShopRomesm) and the 90+ vendors decorate their booth based on that theme. (This year expect to see snow, leaves, flowers and more.) Businesses set up a booth, usually with prizes and give-aways and interact with anyone who stops by their station. It’s a chance for the businesses to get their name out into the community, and for the community to see what businesses and services Rome, Floyd County and beyond have to offer.

EXPO consists of two days. The first day (November 7th) is an EXPO Business After Hours, and the second day (November 8th) is the “open to the public” day. For the Business After Hours, Chamber members and their staff are invited to get a “sneak peak” of the EXPO event before it is open to the public. They are allowed to walk the showroom and interact with the different vendors. All nine of the food vendors (from Provinos to the Three Rivers Club) will cater the event. Annualy, this Business After Hours is the Chamber’s most popular Business After Hours. (If you’ve never been able to make it to a Chamber after hours event or even if you’ve been to one in the past, set your calender for this one!)

Saturday, November 8th, 10am - 3pm is the open to the public EXPO event. This family-friendly event is filled with food, fun, great prizes and games. We invite you to come interact with the 99 different booths at this year’s EXPO. With nine food vendors and various vendors representing just about every industry, come see what this community has to offer!

Newcomer Profile

Dr. Donald Green was born, raised and lived in a small farm town in Michigan for 30 years. It was a discussion with his wife about possible

places to move that Georgia became a sought after destination. When an opportunity to work at Georgia Highlands opened, he jumped at the chance to relocate. Passion for Education

“I started working in the metal stamping industry straight out of college in Michigan. I was a human resource manager for a metal stamping company and I

worked with a lot of local colleges. One day, one of the colleges asked me if I would be interested in teaching a human resource class. I said ‘let’s do this!’ I walked into the class and I was the youngest in the room, it was all adults students, which could have been awkward but we had a great time. After that day I knew that I had found my passion in life. I decided to enroll in an adult degree completion program and after a few years I became the dean. Fast forward a bit and here I am today. It was great to discover the passion and excitement I have for education. Nothing changes lives the way education does. It has the most remarkable ability to not only change your life, but to change the path for your entire family. A family may unfortunately be socioeconomically disadvantaged, but one person in that family gets an education and they literally can change the direction that family goes, forever. “My daily schedule involves attending community events, meeting with faculty, staff and students. I work on financial and political issues for the institution as a whole. My responsibilities involve representing the institution within the community and the University System of Georgia. It involves reaching out to companies, governmental professionals and economic development teams. Also, I work with other educational institutions to ensure that there are easy transitions for high school students or technical college students to be able to come here. Importantly, my job also consists of helping this institution to establish a shared vision

With a background in human resources, it was by chance that Dr. Donald Green was charged with teaching a class. He

enjoyed it so much he made the swap to education and hasn’t looked back since.

of what we want to become and how we can better serve the communities of northwest Georgia. We are currently working on our vision for the college by meeting with faculty, staff and students. My question to them is ‘What do you want us to become?’ By asking that we are crafting a shared vision that we can all pursue.”

Vision for the College“Something that I enjoy is the

development of new bachelor’s degrees that provide the opportunity for the growth of current companies and the establishment of new companies. In the past I’ve helped to bring digital animation and video game design degrees to institutions, molecular diagnostics, information security and intelligence, industrial technology and management. I would like to bring more of those opportunities to northwest Georgia. With Georgia Highlands being such a cost effective, high quality institution, the students who graduate from here do very well. I want to take that cost effective high quality education that we provide at the associates level and build those into baccalaureate degrees. We have two so far, nursing and dental hygiene, but now we hope to move to other disciplines that could best serve the entire community. Between now and the end of June, it is my intent to meet with 100 companies and ask them ‘What kind of talent do you need to continue to grow and succeed?’ Through higher education and young entrepreneurs, we could increase diversity of companies and businesses in the region. When you have increased diversity in a region, you tend to have less of the ups and downs that happen when you rely on a few particular kinds of companies.”

Family Life“I adore my family, I have three kids, two boys and a girl. Raising them, I tried to teach them that they needed to go after their dreams and pursue them. That’s why our oldest is in Melbourne, Australia working to open a business, which is an amazing opportunity for him. Our daughter is at Columbus State University playing softball. Right now I miss my wife and my youngest son a great deal because we are apart, but when he graduates from high school he will join me here as well. My wife Cathy is an amazing person with a huge heart.”

Nobel Laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus

Delivers SpeechDr. Muhammad Yunus recently spoke at the Rome

City Auditorium. He addressed the importance of job creation and building social businesses.

“You are a brand new generation. … you should always be telling yourself and believing it, ‘I’m not a job-seeker, I’m a job-giver.’ And behave like a job-giver,” said Dr. Yunus during his speech.

“We were so pleased for Nobel Laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus to speak here in Rome,” said Dr. Willis Potts, University System of Georgia, Retired, Temple-Inland. “It was a huge win for the community and I think his message resonated with those who attended.”

Thank you to everyone who participated in our “geeky” activities during Rome Geek Week. Geek Week is a week long celebration of technology, innovation and all things geeky. The Greater Rome Chamber of Commerce’s Technology Squaretable, chaired by Peter Terpening, FS Comm, planned events that encourage STEM education.

Geek Week and the upcoming February Confluence Conference are a part of an initiative to promote innovation and technology within the community.

Leadership Georgia Visits Rome

Community Project Updates

Floyd County and the City of Rome thank the 2014 Leadership Georgia class for visiting the community. Events kicked off with a reception at Oak Hill, followed by dinner and entertainment at the historic DeSoto Theatre downtown. The class listened to a presentation by Southeastern Mills representatives and met with Governor Deal. They ended with a “When in Rome” dinner on the Chief John Ross Memorial Bridge and a dance party at the Town Green. The statewide leadership training program brings together young business leaders, civic and community professionals each year to build on a network of people inspired to work for a better Georgia. Diversity in gender, religion, race, occupation and geographical location is a key factor in the selection of applicants.“The Leadership Georgia weekend in Rome was the culmination of nine months of planning by Pam and Peter

Doig (the Program Chairs), the local Leadership Georgia alumni group, and many other community partners,” said Angie Lewis, Citizens First Bank, a division of Synovus Bank, and former Chamber Chairman. “Everyone came together in a phenomenal way to make Rome shine! I could not have been more proud of our community and the program we provided.”“It was mine and my husband David’s sincere privilege to choose the beautiful Rome, Georgia as one of our five

Leadership Georgia program stops,” said Commissioner Gretchen Corbin, Georgia Department of Community Affairs, Leadership Georgia President. “Rome is known for its giving individuals, rich partnerships, and strong sense of community and therefore we knew it was the perfect place to focus our program theme: Giving Through One’s Legacy.”

The Tennis Center of Goegia at Berry College continues to progress. The trees have been cleared and the project has moved from the land clearance stage to the design phase. Local firm, Cevian Design Lab is partnering with the global design firm, Populous. Finalized designs will be made over the next several months, with construction on the $11.4 million SPLOST project expected to begin next spring.

“This is a great time to celebrate progress,” said Mayor Jamie Doss. “The city has always taken a hard line at selecting the best proposal no matter who it comes from, so to have a local firm [Cevian Design Lab] win, this is great news.”

The Tennis Center of Georgia at Berry College is a SPLOST funded project approved by the 2013 SPLOST vote.

Hampton Inn and SuitesWork continues on the Hampton Inn and Suites. What was once a

car lot has been cleared and is now being leveled for construction to begin.

Bekaert Increases Plant Reinvestment from $25 million to $29 million

Bekaert Plant General Manager Gary Downey recently announced the plans to increase the Rome plant’s reinvestment up to $29 million. Mr. Downey told members of the Rome-Floyd County Development Authority that the upgrade will allow the retention of 120 jobs. “This change will allow us to retain jobs while we continue to reinvest in the future,” said Mr. Downey.

Bekaert makes steel wire that is used in tires, rubber hoses and many other applications. The plant has been in Rome for 44 years! Congratulations Bekaert!
