Let’s talk about READING in P1

How do children learn to read?

This typography is not designed to recreate what it would be like to read to read if you were dyslexic it is designed to simulate the feeling of reading with dyslexia by slowing the reading time of the viewer down to a speed of which someone who has dyslexia would read'

First a child needs to understand that

men read as much as women

we read to find out information or for pleasure

we come to school to learn to read

we read from left to right in English

these squiggles are separate words

these squiggles represent sounds

HOW?

First we teach sounds ….

s a t p i n

m d n o c k

in sat nip pat tan tin pit

So we can put them together to make wee words.

We say the sounds like this…

We practise in our reading books.

Find the words that start with p

We teach the characters in the reading books

We teach tricky words.

What can you do?

• Read anything with your child – comics, texts, on the internet, adverts on buses……

• Dads read, mums read, big brothers and sisters read, read to the dog, granny, grandad, goldfish

• The reading homework with your child (It really makes a difference.)
