Slide 2Lemesos is located on Akrotiri Bay, on the island's southern coast and it is the capital of Limassol District. Slide 3Lemesos is the second biggest town of Cyprus with a population of 176 900(2005) citizens and the biggest Municipality. After

the tragic events of the Turkish invasion which occurred in 1974, it has become one of the biggest Mediterranean harbours for the transhipment of goods. Therefore, Lemesos has rapidly developed since then and is actually one of the most important maritime, commercial, tourist and service centres in the area.

Lemesos is also known for its long cultural tradition. It offers the opportunity to the visitors to attend a great number of activities and visit many museums and archaeological sites and it combines, ancient Greek, Frank, Byzantine and other modern influences in a unique way.

Slide 4The town of Lemesos is situated between the ancient towns of Amathus and Curium, two important archeological sites of

Cyprus. The town was probably built in the twentieth century, after the English King Richard the Lionheart had destroyed Amathus in 1191.

Slide 5 A castle is situated near the Old Port which was built in typical 12th century structure. At a later date it was restored by the

Venetians. There is a quite interesting medieval museum inside the castle, which worth’s visiting.Slide 6Kolossi Tower is situated a few kilometers to the west of Lemesos. The tower is a very fine example of military architecture

originally constructed in the 13th century, for the Knights of St. John whilst in Cyprus, and subsequently rebuilt in its present form in the middle of the 15th century.  In the 14th century it came for a time under the domain of the Knights Templar. A red and sweet wine, commandaria, which was produced and exported by the Knights of St. John, is still produced in the area.

Slide 7The Archaeological, the Folk Art, the Medieval and the Water museums are some interesting places for a visitor of Lemesos.Slide 8Although a title held by the Famagusta Port for centuries, the Limassol Port has now become the principal seaport in Cyprus.

This was largely a direct result of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974 leaving the port of Famagusta within occupied territory and inaccessible to Greek Cypriots.

Lemesos and its new port have accumulated importance over time and now is a centre for numerous shipping companies.Slide 9, 10 What is today known as the Lemesos Old Port used to be the main port of the town until 1973 when it was replaced by the

New Port. The current use of the Old Port is as a leisure, fishing boat and coast guard shelter.Slide 11 There is a small Marina east of Lemesos offering shelter to small boats.Slide 12, 13, 14 Lemesos is a tourist resort with a ten mile coastline and the most luxurious hotels of Cyprus. Tourists arrive at Lemesos

throughout the entire year, although the summer months are always busier.

Slides 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22Olympia beach is a place to walk. There are pedestrian paths, cyclist tracks, small coffee shops and facilities

for swimmers.Slide 23Lemesos is famous for the Carnival and the Wine Festival. The wines and cognacs (brandies) that are produced from the grapes that grow in the countryside of Lemesos

are of excellent quality. They have won several awards in international exhibitions. Big quantities are exported to Europe. Many small wineries are found in the countryside near the vines.

Slide 24Many cultural events take place at the ancient theater of Kourion. Slide 25In Lemesos district there are many traditional villages Platres, Phini, Omodos and Agros which produce wine

and fruits. Slide 26 In the 60s The Cyprus Government constructed many dams in order to face water shortage. Kouris,

Germasogia and Polemidia dams are of great importance for Lemesos as they provide drinking water and water agriculture areas.

Slide 27Akrotiri Salt Lake, at the south west of Lemesos, is considered to be one of the eastern Mediterranean’s most

important wetlands as many imigratory birds visit the Lake in the winter and rare flore is found. Slide 28Lemesos is the home of the Cyprus University of Technology. It was established in 2004. Slide 29Welcome to Lemesos, the town of fun, culture and hospitality.
