Ensuring your people treat everyone fairly

This elearning module is designed around the Equality Act 2010, the law which bans unfair treatment and promotes equal opportunities in the workplace and in wider society. Replacing previous anti-discrimination laws, the Equality Act made it easier for people to understand and comply with the law by simplifying the legislation and removing inconsistencies. The act also strengthened protection in some situations.

The act defines nine protected characteristics which cannot be used as a reason to treat people unfairly. More than one of the characteristics applies to all of us, so the act protects everyone against unfair treatment. The following characteristics are protected:

•Age •Disability •Genderreassignment •Marriageandcivilpartnership •Pregnancyandmaternity •Race •Religionorbelief •Sex •Sexualorientation.

The Equality Act sets out unlawful treatment including direct and indirect discrimination, harassment, victimisation and failing to make a reasonable adjustment for a disabled person. The act prohibits unfair treatment in the workplace and in education; whilstprovidinggoods,facilitiesandservices;whenexercisingpublicfunctionsandinthedisposalandmanagementofpremises.Discriminationbasedonassociationisalsoprohibited.
