Integral elements

Are there integral elements that often form key elements

within your work – in other words how do you best generate

and create your own designs/imagery?

I’d like to say that typography is one of my strong

points and the majority of my work has a mainly typographic

focus. I really enjoy photography so I like to incorporate good

photography where possible. I’m a firm believer of less is

more and that usually wiggles its way into my work somehow.

I generate my best imagery by playing around with stuff and

experimenting. I really like half tone, bitmap, abstract imagery,

texture, high contrast, striking imagery. Those sort of things.

I create a lot of things digitally.

Success

What are your strengths? Where have you been most

successful? What do you think was the reason for that

positive experience?

I’ve definitely been most successful working on projects

I’ve enjoyed, specifically the editorial pieces and record

company identity work projects. I also enjoy being a bit messy

and disregarding the grid (not entirely, but I enjoy out of the

box type placement). In my opinion a lot of design is overly

linear and I enjoy trying to make things flow whilst also using

unconventional layouts.

Personality

What are you interested in, what are you about? Do you

feel you have been able to introduce your personality and

interests in your work. In what creative direction do you

want to proceed in the future?

I’m really interested in editorial design, as well as

identity and packaging. I’d pretty much say that I’m interested

in every aspect of design, digital, print, all the things. However,

outside of design I’m very interested in music, I’d love to get

into doing more music-related design. Branding, packaging,

events, identity. That sort of thing. I’m already doing a re-

branding for a london based record label, which is due to

commence in the coming weeks. That should be fun. I really

enjoy editorial design too because it gives me a chance to

mess around with type and layouts (something I enjoy to the

fullest). I like designing for creative people, it’s great bouncing

ideas off someone.

Asked to produce a dark moody CD packaging

design for their new release “Songs of Lies and

Deceit”, which featured images of the band on the

reverse and utilised a photograph they had provided

me with. The band asked for a nice clean minimal

and classy design.

Design and build a very simple website for Solway

Signs, cash register and epos system retailer based

in Cumbria. The site had to have a nice clean,

modern aesthetic and utilise same blue colour as

the rest of the businesses assets. The site will be

used mainly as an online catalogue and should

direct people’s to contact the store owners via email

or telephone to further enquire about purchasing

goods.

for the band’s European, UK and Ireland tours, in the

Music producer and owner of the We Are Wax record

label contacted me with regards to producing a

new logo for a label he was founding “Moodswings

Music”. Unforunately the contract fell through.

The logo had to reflect the deep bass, dark

ambience and minimalistic nature of the music his

label puts out, as well as looking modern clean and

appealing to the younger target audience.

Inventing a cohesive look and design style to

reflect the dark underground electronic music the

label releases. The label looks to appeal to younger

audiences who are in touch with underground

music. And people who go to dark raves and spend

the night with their hoods up. Produce stationary

examples, promo materials and packaging designs.

Produce a magloid sized editorial piece for the

Words by the Water literature festival, so festival

goers could have a bit of background information

about the featured artists and keep track of events.

The piece had to have a classic ‘literature’ feel to

it, yet still have a contemporary design, intrigue

people and catch their eye so they’d pick a copy up.
