Special thanks

and

call for

resolute action

Special Thanks

Thanks to Bayer AG for

- addressing the theme of “research on behalf of climate protection”

- designating a generic theme such as “energy efficiency” as worthy of distinction

- going to the trouble and providing the resources to address this auditorium

- regarding this award as a symbol of gratitude for collaboration between industry and science.

Challenges for the Coming Years

The goal: to achieve zero global growth in greenhouse gases by 2025and reduce emissions by 2 percent annually thereafter

Our homework: - To achieve totally efficient, low-emission capital stock for the OECD states by 2080, e.g. buildings, electricity production, industrial processes- To achieve a previously unknown level of cooperation between industry, politicians and academia for breakthroughs in innovation- To eliminate wastefulness as a status symbol and anchor resource efficiency as a value

Call for Resolute Action

Resignation? Not a responsible answer

“Let's be realistic, let’s try the impossible”

The world needs many global players that - produce plastics with 70 % renewable raw materials- offer passive houses and eco-commercial buildings- produce large cars weighing 700 kg instead of 2 tons

- drive membrane and absorption technology, biotechnology and chip technology- are listed in the Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index over decades

Energy and Materials Efficiency in Germany

Goal of the German government: to double energy productivity between 1990 and 2020

- difficult to achieve, as time is running out: 2.7 % a year

Expected benefits:

- An additional €20 billion in investment annually and 300,000 jobs- Strengthening of manufacturers’ and service suppliers’ export position

Can the disproportionate ratio between the current bank bailouts and real investment in climate protection be reconciled?

Proposals to speed up diffusion

Learning local networks

- imported from Switzerland

- accelerated efficiency through the exchange of experiences between those responsible for energy policy

- 15 networks currently operational, about 30 networks by the end of 2009

- potential of between 500 and 700

- profit of €10 per ton at a CO2

reduction of 20 million tons

Closing Thoughts

…… The stone age did not end due to a lack of stone, but rather through the command of a more efficienttechnology

The fossil fuel energy age could be brought to a close in this century through

- profitable energy- and materials-efficient technologies and services, and the use of renewable energies- intensive cooperation between industrialized and emerging economies- integration of external costs for energy and materials use- a shift in social values and a willingness to act
