Einführung | Introduction

Eberhard Ross studierte Malerei an der Folkwanghochschule/ Universität Essen. Ross hat die Zen-Philosophie eingehend studiert, und das zeigt sich sowohl im Inhalt als auch in der Ausführung der Werke. In seinen abstrakteren Arbeiten bedeckt er sorgfältig die Leinwände, Blätter und seit kurzem auch Aluminiumtafeln mit Netzwerken von Linien und Mustern, die sich organisch in einem repetierenden und für Ross meditativen Prozess entwickeln. Mehr und mehr beinflusst durch wissenschaftliche Daten und fotografische Aufnahmen von Naturphänomenen fängt er d ie Wunder von scheinbar zufälligen Formationen ein, und übersetzt sie auf die Leinwand. Er ist fasziniert von den Spiralformen von Muscheln, Blättern und Rinden, Schmetterlingsflügeln, Fingerabdrücken und den Kräuselungen der Wasseroberfläche. Bei der Schwarm-Serie hat er Filmmaterial von der Zusammenkunft tausender Stare bei ihrem Flug über Nordeutschland zugrunde gelegt, und seine Bilder sind buchstäblich ein Schnappschuss eines Augenblickes in ihrer Flugbahn, der die dynamische Beziehung innnerhalb des gesamten Vogelschwarmes in einem Moment festhält. Indem wir durch den Fortschritt in der Astronomie, Mikroskopie, Zeitraffer-Fotografie usw. mehr über die Naturgesetze erfahren, wird klar, dass ähnliche Muster der Struktur und der Energie den Kosmos und unsere Welt bestimmen. Jene, die fernöstliche Philosophien wie Buddhismus und Taoismus studieren, sind mit der Idee vertraut, dass alles in einer fortwährend dynamischen Wechselwirkung verknüpft ist, und dass den Prozessen in der Natur Prinzipien unterlegt sind. Davon versucht Eberhard Ross uns in seinem Werk eine Vorstellung zu vermitteln.

Eberhard Ross studied Fine Art at Folkwanghochschule/ University Essen in Germany. Ross has studied the phi losophy of Zen Buddhism for many years and this is revealed in his art both in the subject matter and in its execution. In his more abstract works Ross painstakingly covers canvases, sheets of paper and more recently aluminium with networks of lines and pattern that develop organically in a repetitive and for Ross a meditative process. Increasingly taking inspiration from scientific data and photographic archives of natural phenomena he captures the wonder of apparently random formations and translates these onto the canvas. He is fascinated by the spiral forms of snail shells, leaves and bark, butterfly wings, fingerprints, and ripples on the surface of water. In the Swarm series of paintings he has taken film footage of the gathering of thousands of starlings as they fly across Northern Germany and his paintings are literally a snapshot of a moment in their flight path revealing the dynamic relationship between a group of birds at one moment.As we learn more about the laws of natural science through advancing technologies of astronomy, microscopy, time-lapse photography and so on it becomes clear that similar patterns of structure and energy occur in the cosmos and in our own world. For those studying Eastern philosophies such as Buddhism and Taoism there is fami l ia r i ty w i th the idea that every th ing ex is ts in a continuously dynamic relationship and that there are principles underlying the natural flows of Nature. In essence this is what Ross is trying to convey a sense of in his work.
