Tadao Ando’s Philosophy• Architecture is- Interplay of solid-voids. Alternative of open and closed. Contrast of light and darkness.• Zen – focuses on the concept of simplicity and concentrates on the inner feeling rather than appearance in order to represent the aesthetic from sensation.• Ando believes in creating spaces of enclosure rather than

openness. On the exterior, the wall deflects the surrounding urban chaos, while on the interior it encloses a private space.

• Use of rough cast concrete.• Interpenetration of planes and spaces.• Narrow slit like openings.• Complex three dimensional circulation path.

Design Concept of Yumebutai

The basic framework of the project is round universe and circular universe connected by walkways. Rather than depending solely on geometry, Tadao Ando experimented with irregular topography that remained after earthquake. In addition , he tried to create a new style of garden combining the traditional Japanese tour garden with Western tour gardens, whose framework is much less ambiguous

Material Justification

• Rough cast concrete looks more similar to rocks commonly found in nature and thus help in harmonizing building with the environment.

• Glass – Tadao Ando used majorly Translucent glass and he compares it with water and says that large glass panes with concrete looks like water flowing in between the rocks.

• The reason for having glass as translucent is that it has got heaviness unlike transparent glass .

• Shells-Ando wanted to use 1 million scallop shells to line the pools but ran into problems when he realized restaurants on the island imported the scallops sans-shells. Obviously he somehow got his 1 million shells, I didn't count them so I'm taking his word for it.
