FROM THE PRINCIPAL

STUDENT FREE DAY A reminder to families that our 4

th and final Student Free

Day for the Year will be held on Friday 1st

November (week 3). The staff will be involved in the following tasks on that day: Site Review around student performance data, One Plan Development for our students and student class allocations for 2020.

CLASSES FOR 2020 The class structures for 2020 have been finalised and staff will begin the process of allocating students to classes next Friday. If you have any specific requests that you wish the school to consider in relation to student alloca-tions to classes, please put these requests to the prin-cipal via letter or email. All of these requests will be taken into account when we allocate students to classes for 2020. If your children won’t be attending MBSPS in 2020, please contact the school ASAP as this will have an impact on how we establish the student groupings.

SCHOOL COUNCIL The School Council will meet on the Monday night of week 3 and 7 this term. The school budget for 2020 is close to being finalised and so at our Week 7 meeting, we will pre-sent that the proposed student fees for 2020 are $244, an increase of $3 from 2019. This figure is identical to the school card allocation provided by the government in 2020, and is the standard legally recoverable amount for those students not on school card. Should you wish to query this increase, we invite you to attend the School Council meet-ing in week 7.

SITE REVIEW UPDATE In our recent site review in term 3, staff were asked “What are the 3 biggest challenges for you in relation to your daily work at MBSPS?” A number of the responses from staff centred around stu-dent behaviour, a sample of which have been listed below:

Impact of behaviour on the work task completion, respect, dishonesty, disrupting others, walking out of class

Behaviour management in classrooms, yard, assem-bly – consistent whole school behaviour manage-ment.

Refusal from students to participate in their learning.

Learning to defuse angry, older students.

The lack of respect that the children have for the re-lief teachers and the SSOs. The current behaviour model holds no “fear” for the upper primary students – they work the system, can get 3 steps before I get a take home.

General yard cleanliness shows a lack of respect for their school environment.

These types of responses are the very reason we have developed our new behaviour management policy titled “Engagement and Inclusion Policy”. We are very appre-ciative of the support we are receiving from families in rela-tion to modifying student behaviour at school over the past 10 weeks. These processes take time with some students but it is important we maintain our endeavours, as proving a quality learning environment for all students at all times is our ultimate goal.

Kind Regards, STEVE BENNETT

Acting Principal

Making a booking to meet with a School Leader We value the importance of meeting face to face when/if significant concerns arise, but it is im-portant that these meetings are planned, rele-vant information is available and sufficient time is set aside. On this basis our school is trialling a new process. Parents/caregivers are asked to contact the front office (in person or via phone) if you wish to meet with a leader. The front office staff will make the booking, ideally within 24 hours, and will confirm via text/phone call, the time of the scheduled meeting. We would respectfully ask parents/caregivers not to come to the front office expecting to meet with a leader—schools are busy places and so if you wish to speak with a leader, you need to make a booking. Please Note: Classroom teacher should also be the first point of contact in relation to matters that directly affect your child. Thank you for your co-operation.

Pastoral Care Worker News: How do we have more joy?

Hi All,

I hope you all had a good break. I don’t know about you but coming back to school can bring mixed emotions. It can be great to see friends again; you can feel

excited about learning new things and about getting some time away from siblings…but it can also be frustrating, tiring and scary if you are worried about your

learning or navigating friendships. Like all situations there are often good aspects and hard aspects, but it is so so so easy for us to focus on the bad ones.

Take a look at the image below, what first springs to mind? “That the car looks tired”, “its’ straining up hill”, “the kids are screaming in the back”, or maybe “they

seem like their struggling a lot”. Are all of these real? For sure! When I was a kid I definitely fought with my sister about the fact she was looking out of MY

window on car trips…but is this all we can see? I did this exercise with classes, most of the groups agreed that finding the negatives in the picture were easy,

but finding things to be grateful for was much harder, but possible when they put their minds to it. One group said “they could be grateful for being on a holi-

day”, “the family being together” or even “that they have a car and a caravan”. The positives are there but they are hard to see when we’re trained to look for

negatives.

Berne Brown a researcher from the USA states that in over 11,000 interviews she conducted, she found that all people who experienced joy

and happiness daily actively practiced gratitude. Moreover she interviewed people from diverse backgrounds, who were experiencing home-

lessness, had come out of DV situations, had lost loved ones, had come from refugee backgrounds, inmates, abuse survivors, and those who

were living below the poverty line. Regardless of the circumstances there were joyous people and unhappy people in each group, the defining

factor between them was if they practiced gratitude. This is incredibly freeing because it means that we are in control of the amount of joy we

can feel.

This seems simple right? You might be thinking, “I have an attitude of gratitude”, but this is not the same as practice. I have an attitude of Pilates, I have

weights, a balance ball, a Pilates mat and dvds for my chronic back pain and yet it has been over 2 months since I did any Pilates! I need to practice Pilates, to

get up each morning and do it, not think about it, but actually do it. The hard thing is building in practices that encourage us and our families to be grateful. But

I have some simple ideas!

1. Have a gratitude jar where you write things you’re grateful for each day.

2. At the dinner table have each person say one thing they’re grateful for.

3. Write a note to one family member, friend or important person in your life about what you value about them and how they make your world better.

4. List three things before you go to bed that you’re thankful for.

5. Make an alphabet poster, with one thing you’re thankful for with each letter, e.g. I am thankful for: Andy (my husband), Brownies, Cars, Dogs (my dog

Noah) etc…

However you do it, making gratitude a practice for you and your family can be a great way to increase joy in everyday life and help you to see the light in dark

places. Remember that I am available to catch up and chat on Mondays and Wednesdays, just call the front office and I will follow up next time I’m in. I hope

you have a great week.
