Principal's MessageAs we prepare for the busy-ness, recognition, planning and celebrations that occur during the second half of Term 4, we pause to recognise the wonderful learning that happens here every day. We are proud to offer a range of on-campus and community based learning experiences for all students.

Take a moment to share the successes of our students and staff as together we answer the real question of "How is this child smart?"

I look forward to bringing you the final newsletter for 2018 on Friday 21 December.

IlluminateThirteen Year 9 Tumbi students recently participated in the Illuminate Challenge, a project based learning experience that requires students to provide possible solutions to real life future problems. Once again Newcastle University hosted this event.

This year's challenge was about creating an initiative that will meet the future needs of the Central Coast region whilst maintaining the core values set out by our council in the 2018-2028 Community strategic plan.

The five core values being: 1. Belonging 2. Smart 3. Green 4. Responsible

5. Liveable

Our students had the opportunity to listen to the Mayor and other key figures in our local community speak about the future prospects of our region. Students then performed in a real world business style environment where they were completely responsible for their own learning without any intervention from their teachers. They had to prepare business plans, financial reckonings, pitch their ideas and showcase their final idea.

Our boys and girls teams did well and should be congratulated for their mature, responsible behaviour. They were true ambassadors for our school. Congratulations to Sean, Sebastian, Thomas, Jarryd, Greg, Yani, Ben, Eliza, Georgia, Sarah, Jayda, Madison and Evangeline.

It was amazing to see our girls’ team recognised as Illuminate champions and overall winners with their business - 'GreenInc' and to read some wonderful feedback from the judges: 'they were truly amazing and would rival any current marketing firm. Their sense of humour was fantastic and really well timed. Their radio ad was an example of true marketing and would fit right into some of the top marketing agencies work.'

World Teacher Recognition AwardsTwo of our wonderful teachers, Ms Proust and Mr Ham, were recently acknowledged at the World Teachers Day Recognition Awards held to celebrate the qualities and values of great teachers across the coast. Both teachers are exemplary educators who are inspiring role models and passionate teachers.

The event is sponsored by the Department and Principals Association as wide recognition of the profession.

Year 8 HSIE Travel ExpoOur annual Year 8 HSIE Travel Expo was held recently and all the students did a fantastic job setting up their stall, creating brochures and pitching their favourite holiday destinations to the Expo visitors.

Our winners for 2018 were:

• Most informative Greece and Japan• Best presented Scotland and Japan• Teacher vote Finland and Portugal

Congratulations to all students and their teachers.

Year 7 Camp150 Year 7 students had the wonderful opportunity of experiencing the Outdoor Adventure Camp in Wiseman's Ferry.

The day started with an exciting trip across the Hawkesbury River on the Barge. On arrival the kids were eager to tackle all the fun activities which included abseiling, rock climbing, canoeing, mud run, archery, zip lining and a fun team challenge activity. It is fair to say the students and teachers were exhausted by the end of the trip.

It was fantastic to see students push past their fears and their great sense of excitement when they completed these challenges. They learned that if they put their minds to something and are willing to push past their comfort zone they can achieve great things.

Mr Davis was a huge favourite at the mud run making sure all the students, and often the teachers, were covered head to toe in mud.

The camp was a huge success with many new friendships formed and positive relationships made with teachers.

Blue Datto Road Safety IncursionYear 10 attended the Blue Datto Road Safety Program where students were reminded of the dangers that are present when driving a car, being a passenger and a pedestrian.

They worked collaboratively to come up with some suggestions as to how we as a Campus can support them in road safety. Thanks to Mr Palmer for making himself available during the afternoon to receive these suggestions and give his insight into the topic.

Remembrance Day CeremonyThe Campus enjoys growing links with Forresters Beach Retirement Village. We attend and participate in their commemorations. Recently three students attended representing our Campus and Ms Emma McBride.

‘What a wonderful presentation your two students, Sean and Charlotte gave to our Remembrance Day Service. It was the highlight of the Service and has received so much positive comment. It has certainly reminded us all of the wonderful talent and attitude which exists in our younger generation and confirms to us that we are passing the country into safe hands.’

adventure in itself to get to.

Our students experienced wildlife first hand, were able to overcome a number of obstacles and became self-sufficient in setting and packing up their equipment daily. They also did their own cooking and boiled water for drinking.

It was a wonderful experience for students and staff creating memories which are sure to last a lifetime.

moved to The Entrance Campus for a tour and lunch prepared by the Hospitality students and time to get to know each other.

Open Girl’s CricketOur girls took the field once again in Open Cricket against a quality Lisarow squad. They went out there and gave it their all with the usual gusto, high spirits and talent despite only having ten players.

The girls carried themselves incredibly well and played the game in great spirit. Although they were facing three NSW representatives and some other strong players, our girls never gave up. We are very proud of their success and attitude.

This is not the last you will hear from this amazing team of girls. They can only grow stronger and stronger with experience.

Who will be the supreme Greek God? 7W were joined by 7B, 7T, Mrs Player, Ms Casey and Mr Johnson for their election campaigns and speeches and to vote for the Greek God of the Gods!!It was great to watch the students take pride in their work and share how they are smart and teach us all about their chosen God. Smoke and Mirrors - Youth Documentary ProjectRecently, two very talented photographers; Hilda Bezuidenhout and Edwina Richards mentored Year 9 Photography students at our Campus.

During the workshops these students learnt about self-portraiture, how to use text creatively, objects/clothing and backdrops, the use of collage and relationships. Our students were exposed to a variety of social documentary artists and how photographic portraits have the potential to be brutally honest or totally misleading (hence the name – smoke and mirrors).

We had 16 students’ work selected to be displayed in a collaborative paste-up piece alongside other central coast high schools. The Smoke and Mirrors artwork can now be viewed at the Imperial Centre, Gosford.

We are very proud of all students involved and thankful to Hilda and Edwina for their time and efforts.

Tumbi SpeaksAt our annual Tumbi Speaks Competition we were treated to some amazing public speakers.

Students shared their knowledge and ideas on a variety of topics and entertained the audience using expert public speaking skills. It was fabulous to have parents/carers in attendance to support their children.

Given the opportunity, these speakers will have a positive impact on changing our world for the better!

Congratulations to all the students who participated and particularly to our winners: Stage 4 Elodie T and Stage 5 Sean C.

Former Student Visits TUCIt was wonderful to have former student, Jason Pawley visit the campus yesterday to share his journey since graduating Tumbi Umbi Campus in 2005. We were grateful for the time he gave to prepare his presentation and address students at a special assembly, after flying in from Darwin where he now lives.

He shared his time as a student and was honest that he wasn't engaged in school; he now saw that as a missed opportunity. After gaining his HSC, he joined the Army where he served Australia in two tours of Afghanistan. He shared about the skills he gained while serving in the Defence Forces and reflected on the importance of ANZAC and Remembrance Days for students. After leaving the Army, he took his passion for music to a professional level, playing at weddings and entertaining at venues throughout the Northern Territory, he also has his own EP being released in 2019. He is now a firefighter and has used his role to help with a number of charity fundraisers, including being the first Firefighter to represent the Northern Territory in the Fireman's calendar.

It was also lovely to have Jason's parents, Wendy and George, join us for the assembly and both shared their joy in seeing Jason speak to the students. Wendy has given a great deal to our campus through her passion for Aboriginal art, and assisted with the artwork pictured behind them.

This was a fabulous opportunity to have a former student inspire our students. We are
