Experimental Vibration Tests
Forced vibration tests Measure response of structure due to controlled force
Free vibration tests Measure response of structure with initial condition
(by impulsive load)
Ambient vibration tests Measure response of structure under its natural motion

Ambient Vibration = Microtremors (?)
Microtremors (microsisms) = The constant vibrations of Earth’s surface
Very small amplitude (10‐4 to 10‐6 mm)
Caused by daily human activities and natural phenomena
Ambient Vibration TestAdvantages
No specific excitation source is required
Service condition test is applicable
Disadvantages
Poor signal‐to‐noise ratios, Only few lower modes can be identified
Sophisticated method for analysis
Highly sensitive equipments are necessary
Excitations should be random
