Ask EastbourneBy Revd Nick Cornell

Life throws us all sorts of questions! The mundane - why is there never enough milk in the fridge? The more serious - what happens when we die?

Whatever our particular question, Ask Eastbourne is an initiative organised by a number of Eastbourne churches to fi nd out the big questions we all have in Eastbourne and think through some possible answers.

We want as many people to ask their questions as possible!

To ask your question and see what other people have been asking why not visit our website - www.askeastbourne.com where you can post your question.

Alternatively why not send your question to our church and we’ll add it to the survey.

What about answers to the big questions?

Once we’ve collected in and collated everyone’s responses, from Tuesday 26th March - Thursday 28th March we’ll be holding free events where every night a variety of people will help us think through one of the top questions at the Winter Gardens from 7:45pm.

There will be a mix of talks, interviews and opportunities to ask questions at each of these events.

Will you help us fi nd the big questions here in Eastbourne?

Welcome to the All Saints’ Parish Magazine...By Lynda Couch-Smith - Contents Editor

If you could ask God one question what would it be? We‘re putting the spotlight on ‘Ask Eastbourne’ a new initiative which aims to fi nd out what questions we would love God to answer.

There’s an update on the Winter Night Shelter programme helping Eastbourne’s homeless.

All Saints is a church on your doorstep offering fun and fellowship – oh yes it does – the Director of the All Saints Players explains more.

Also in this edition we have a book review, news on a ‘design a church chair ‘competition, some gardening prose and a foodie recipe to inspire you.

And in this the Diamond Jubilee Year the Reverend Robert Lovatt refl ects on the Queens support for issues of faith.

As always a warm welcome is waiting for you at All Saints. Events and services are listed below, on the back page and on our website www.aseb.co.uk

Eastbourne Winter Night Shelter UpdateBy David Barratt

When we started planning for the night shelter over 12months ago, I don’t think we imagined how the project would impact so many lives across our Town.

Apart from serving the obvious needs of our homeless guests, who have indeed become our friends, the night shelter has been the catalyst for establishing many new friendships between volunteers, churches, and business connections within the Eastbourne community.

It’s been an interesting journey for all of those involved and a real blessing to see how people are willing and open with each other – guests and volunteers.

A recent example of this would be when two of our guests from Spain and Poland were interacting one evening and Daniel (Spanish) was helping Sebastian (Polish) with his English homework!

We are currently accommodating 7 or 8 guests per night and around 9 people have been found accommodation through the various agencies working on their behalf.

God has really blessed every aspect of this ministry. To Him be all the praise and all the glory.

Why is a Church doing a Panto? Churches shouldn’t do Panto - Oh yes they should!By Julian Dale Director,All Saints’ Players

Well, as a veteran of the last nine All Saint’s Players’ Pantomimes, I think it comes down to two main things: fun and fellowship. Let me take each in turn.

We have a God who loves to hear our laughter, after all He invented it. Not cruel or cynical laughter, but joyful giggling and glee. There’s a common view that Christians are rather po-faced and take themselves too seriously but it’s not an easy belief to cling onto if you saw “The Great Gold-dust Conspiracy” when 40 or so members of All Saints (including teachers, youth workers, lawyers and a dentist!) got dressed up in silly costumes and sung & danced to David Churchyard’s wonderful band.

At its best panto is pure unadulterated fun - where else can you see a vicar dressed up as a dancing Christmas tree?

Secondly “fellowship”, which I think is the great hidden secret of attending a vibrant church like All Saints. We are all built for friendship, for relationship. It’s also a chance to forge friendships with people who you might not otherwise get to spend time with; the A-level student rubs shoulders with the Fire Offi cer; the

unemployed youngster chats with the bank manager and thanks to Eastbourne College’s generosity, we get to welcome almost 700 audience members into our fun for the evening.

All Saints’ Book Club By Mary Nixon

‘Christ in all the Scriptures’ written by A.M. HodgkinPublished by Christian Heritage. If we want to learn about Jesus Christ our fi rst port of call is usually the Gospels, but if we think that Christ can only be found in those four books then we are missing out on the big picture. As the title suggests this book shows that the message and life of Christ runs through every part of scripture. Every book of the bible is covered from Genesis to Revelation, showing God’s amazing rescue plan for mankind throughout. I fi rst bought this book as it was recommended by the Rev David Pawson in his book ‘Unlocking the Bible’, also published by Christian Heritage. From page one I have found it compelling reading and I highly recommend this book.

The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee By Revd Robert Lovatt

How grateful I am to Her Majesty the Queen for her years of faithful service. The Queen’s speech in December was a marvellous restatement of the essential Christmas message of a Saviour coming into our world.

Now in my late 50’s I am most appreciative of the monarchy, but in my more radical years I often used to wonder why we had a system whereby the head of State and Head of church were positions that were unelected and not according to any particular merit of the individual concerned.

However as I look across the channel or the Atlantic to systems where the Head of State is elected, we end up with a situation where the winning candidate often divides the nation and has to be party political.

How fortunate we are that our Head of State does not need to be party political, nor indulge in the ugliness of negative campaigning.

In an age when secularism seems to be in the ascendant how grateful I am for the Queens’s unwavering support for issues of faith. My prayer is that those next in line will appreciate and learn from her example.

We do not want for example someone who merely defends faith, important though that is, but someone who defends the faith.

May Her Majesty know God’s richest blessing on this important anniversary.

Take a PewThe Church of England is asking us to dream up an innovative design for chairs that combine comfort, durability and style, yet maintain sympathy for the historic interiors of our churches.

Deadline for entries for ‘Design a Church Chair’ is 16th April.

Judges include the eminent furniture designer John Makepeace.
