Reflections from our All Saints Parishioners

Deacon Mike Lynch

My sisters and brothers in

Christ. Today we celebrate

the great gift that Jesus left

us before he ascended to his

Father. That is the gift of his

real abiding presence, and of

his body and blood that we

are invited to consume

during the celebration of the

Eucharist. What more could

our God give to us? What

more could we ask of our

God?

Whenever we eat and drink,

we are transformed. Most

food is good for our body; it feeds our

mind and enlivens our spirits. In fact,

we feel better after we have eaten a

good meal; we are full, satisfied and

energized.

Unexplainable food for life, the holy

bread and wine fills us’ though we do

not know how. Relying on our faith to

believe that the true presence of our

God makes his home in our body, heart

and soul, we come back again and

again for more of this holy food. We

have been invited to come, from here

and from there, to eat and to drink, as

one in Christ.

On this great Feast of the Body and

Blood of Christ, we gather not to

explain how this mystery happens, but

to fall on our knees in profound

adoration, to celebrate with deep joy

that God is truly persent to each one of

us.

Let us pray Lord;

Help us to focus, as we celebrate the (con’t on pg 2)

Solemnity of the Most Holy

Body and Blood of Christ, in the Eucharist: Remind us

that we are given the

ultimate gift we can receive, in praise and thanksgiving

for all that Christ has done

or us;

Help us to be strengthened in

our belief that all things are

possible with God; And

enable us to share his love, which permeates our lives,

with all those we encounter, as we continue our journey

through this life;

And we ask this in the name of Jesus,

your son. AMEN

*The ASParish Newletter team wants to thank each of our parishioners who have said “YES” to sharing reflections in our weekly news. Some will be reflections on the weekend liturgy, where some will be their personal reflections during this time. If you would like to share a reflection, please contact Glenna at [email protected]

The man we know as movie star John Wayne was born as Marion Morrison in Iowa in 1907.

In 1914, his family moved West, and Marion began to be called “Duke.” In the height of the Great Depression, he worked for movie studios as a prop man, and eventually became an extra and later starred as the cowboy Breck Coleman in the 1930 film, “The Big Trail.” He was renamed John Wayne by the studio to help craft a larger showing.

In the 1940s and 1950s, John Wayne starred in major Westerns and War pictures. He had four children with his first wife. In 1964, he was diagnosed with lung cancer and lost a lung and several ribs. He had two more marriages, one ending in divorce, the other lasting until his death and resulting in three children. Though he was raised Presbyterian himself, all seven of his children were raised Catholic by their mothers.

When his end was near, Wayne was in agony, succumbing to stomach cancer. A priest was called, and Wayne was baptized, and the priest administered last rites.

That night, Wayne fell into a coma. “I don’t know the technicalities of or what constitutes a conversion,” said son Michael,

“Tough Guy” John “Duke” Wayne’ on set

“But Dad did die in the Church."

In 1979, he died of stomach cancer at the age of 72. Fr. Muñoz, Wayne’s grandson, said that his grandfather expressed a degree of regret about not becoming a Catholic earlier in life: “that was one of the sentiments he expressed before he passed on,” blaming “a busy life.”

From Wayne’s example, we should learn that it is never too late to embrace God’s forgiveness. We should not allow a busy life, no matter how important we think the work is, to keep us from a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Receiving the sacraments and especially weekly Mass attendance, can help foster that relationship.

Thoughts from Pope Francis:

EUCHARIST

“…the Eucharist is no mere symbol but is in fact the true body and blood of Jesus Christ, which has the ability to transform our hearts and minds to be

more like him.”

“The Eucharist is Jesus who gives himself entirely to us. To nourish

ourselves with him and abide in him through Holy Communion, if we do it

with faith, transforms our life into a gift to God and to our brothers,

To let ourselves be nourished by the “Bread of Life, means to be in tune

with the heart of Christ, to assimilate his choices, thoughts, behaviors.”

ABORIGINAL HEALING CIRCLE: SPECIAL CHAT NIGHT

Zoom Video Chat with ASP

GLENNA O’QUINN PAROCHIAL ADMINISTRATOR, ASP

During our upcoming “the Gathering Place” on June 18th at 7 pm, parishioners are going to be treated to an incredibly SPECIAL CHAT NIGHT. With National Aboriginal Day soon approaching, we have invited as Guest of Honor: Elder Manson Gloade to join us and to lead our parish family in a traditional Aboriginal Healing Circle. Our community has faced a great deal of loss, pain, and disappointment in past years as we traveled our journey of faith in Cumberland County. From the loss of leaders of our faith, loved ones who have passed on, major changes in the way we see ourselves as a church and the most recent loss of Father Craig Christensen as our Pastor. All of these pains have layered on top of others and then, add things that have happened from outside our community; COVID-19 and the devastating losses of lives so unnecessarily in Porta pique, Canada’s Air Force, the Snowbirds and the incredible damage from racism in our world. Healing Circles Are Elements of Native American Spirituality. The healing circle/talking circle is an element of North American aboriginal spirituality, which has historically been an underlying concept that permeates every aspect of Native American life.

Join us on June 18th to learn more about these healing ways and to share a unique, beautiful way to find peace in our hearts. “Finding Joy in the Sorrow” We want to THANK Deacon Howie Goldstein for being our Guest of Honor on our chat this past week, as we talked about “Finding Joy in the Sorrow”. Every person has had to “fake it until you make it’ when it comes to putting on a brave face in a time of sorrow. But we are not always that great at looking and finding JOY at these difficult times. The ability to step back from our sorrow and with purpose look for JOY, takes time and practice before becoming automatic, but it is worth the study and effort. Deacon Howie’s gentle and well-practiced ways to find the Joy, is a reflection worth replicating in all our lives. Thank you, Deacon Howie!

ASPARISH FAMILY

Staying Connected…. COMMUNICATION PRIORITY #1

Continuing our conversation this week on ASParish

Communication Priority, we are challenging our teams

and church communities, to re-think the tools we use

in reaching out to our parishioners. Many of the things

that were once used as the main methods to reach out,

have changed dramatically during COVID. These

changes are impacting us to think about church from a

“no building” point of view and considering our

parishioners and their ability to “reach back” to us

with easy tools. We are now asking the question a lot

“How can we be church, without a CHURCH?”

If you have a computer and internet, then we ask and

encourage you to get ‘Linked” with our computer/

intern

et tools: Emails, Newsletters, Facebook,

Website. If you do not have this

ability, are you on the parish

telephone trees to get the

information? For those without

computers / internet we always have

the standard tools to reach out;

-Phone #: 1-902-667-2523 or 902-

667-5244 Mon – Fri, 9 -12 noon

- Mail: PO Box 1075, Amherst, NS

B4H 2E3

Who do you know that needs a

“LINK” into their faith family?

Who needs to be connected to

updates? Please let us know.!!

FAITH AND FINANCES: (REPEATED)

All Saints Parish Financial Updates:

ASP LEADSHIP AND FINANCE TEAMS

In October 2019, a new journey began for the Catholic

Community in Cumberland County. Forming a large parish

family by marrying 7 unique church communities and

creating one BIG FAITH FAMILY.

This was not an easy step for any one church because of the

fear of losing the identity of each community, the fear of

closing churches, the fear of who controls the money and

sometimes the fear for the sake of fear alone!

However, with each day starting on October 1st, 2019, we

have had amazing “God Sightings”, new friendships created,

new opportunities developed and most importantly an

extraordinarily strong bond of what we share together…. the

Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

When we stand in unity in what we share; the Word and the

Eucharist, then all the fears and worries can (and have

started) to fade away.

The ASP Leadership and Finance Team made a commitment

to begin sharing the financial information for the parish, as

soon as we had more accurate numbers pulled together. This

week, a first version of this information is below and the 2019

Year-End Finance Statement for the parish, will be

emailed/mailed out by the end of June.

With these goals almost completed, the team is starting to

work on the next priority Finances; “what to do during our

COVID church closures to continue supporting our

community?”

New government funding is being looked at, at this time,

new fundraisers considered, local locations setting up

drop off donation spots for envelopes and new options

available to you to share contributions safely. Thank you

for all you share!

Funds being collected are being used for OUTREACH to

our community groups servicing Cumberland County

needs, upkeep of our properties and staff to keep getting

it done. Here are the options available currently:

-In person: Central Office at 63 Church St in the locked

mailbox on the wall beside the door.

-Mail Box: PO Box 1075, Amherst, NS, B4H 2E3

-E-transfers: To Mary [email protected] or

Evelyn at [email protected]

-Credit Cards: VISA, MASTERCARD can be set up for

regular weekly or one-time donations

-PAR: Payment Automatic Remittance process set up

with a VOIDED check, to have regular donations taking

from account monthly

Any questions, please contact the office at 902-667-5244

or 902-667-2523. God Bless!
