Commemorating the 100th Anniversary
Our Lady of Fatima
On May 13, 1917 the Blessed Virgin Mary
appeared to three peasant children in Fatima,
Portugal. It was the same year as the Bolshevik
Revolution in Russia which toppled a Czar. The
Blessed Mother spoke about the need to convert
Russia, and she predicted catastrophic events and
the rise of totalitarianism in the future if the world
did not turn to God, to reconciliation and peace.
She urged the children to pray and do penance for
sinners and for the conversion of all. Many of Our
Lady’s predictions came true. Sadly and
frightfully. Obviously, we didn’t pray enough.
We didn’t work hard enough for peace.
It is now May 13, 2017, one hundred years later.
The world is very different now but, human nature
being what it is, it is still threatened by ominous
developments undermining world peace. Our
Lady’s message, then, is very applicable to our
times. We should pray, cultivate, urge and
exemplify self-giving love in a world where evil
and selfishness still have powerful influence. We
have to say a lot of prayers! Many people think
that war is a punishment from God for sin. There
may be some truth to this, however, God never
wants to punish us. Rather, we punish ourselves
by the choices we make and when those with a
godless agenda prevail over those who choose the
path of love. When the majority of a society, a
small one or a global one, chooses evil, evil
triumphs and gets its day. And when this
happens, there follows destruction, self-interest,
division and, sometimes, wars. The need to
convert the world — one person at a time — is
more important now than it ever was. Let’s work
hard this time to bring hearts to God.
As we commemorate this anniversary, we should
thank God that we have been given the gift of
Christian faith and the mission of fostering
goodwill in our families, our local communities,
our country and the world. Let’s commit to
conquering evil by love and good works. Let us
hasten the day when love will conquer over the
dark forces among us who seek the ruin of our
souls and the world.
Ascension Thursday is a holy day of obligation,
next Thursday, May 25th. Our Mass schedule for
the holy day will be: noon in St. Paul’s Church
and 7:00 PM in St. Peter’s Church.

The Liturgy of the Word this weekend:
As our Easter progresses, we find ourselves focusing less on the early church and more on what we are to do now. Jesus gives us a roadmap in today’s Gospel if we are willing to listen to him. As we gather for our celebration today, let us give thanks for Jesus our guide and pray for the faith to follow as he asks.
FAITH FORMATION NEWS
The Sacrament of Confirmation was celebrated last weekend in our parish. The newly confirmed and their families will have lasting memories of a beautiful liturgy celebrated by Bishop Edward Scharfenberger. First Holy Communion for the 2nd grade will be held this coming Saturday at 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM.
(Photo of Bishop, Fr. Tom and Danielle & John Forino.)
Below is an essay from one of our newly confirmed students, Danielle Francis Forino about the saint she chose for Confirmation, Saint Francis of Assisi. “St. Francis was born in the year 1181 in the city and county of Assisi, Spoleto, Italy. His feast day is October 4th and he is the patron saint of Ecologists due to his boundless love of animals and nature. Saint Francis chose to abandon his life of luxury and dedicated his life to the church and his time to helping nurse lepers. He was told by Christ to live a life of poverty and rebuild the Christian Church. He preached the words of the Lord and gained thousands of followers who became known as Franciscan friars. He preached throughout villages, he also went to the extremes of preaching to animals, then receiving the name “God’s fool.” Francis was the first person to receive the holy wound of the stigmata. St. Francis died in 1226, leaving millions of followers across the globe. He left an impact on society, similar to Jesus. I chose St. Francis because he dedicated his life to something important to him and ignored wealth. Like Francis, I am not materialistic. Money and wealth cannot provide me with happiness. Similar to him, I love animals, preferably my horses. My horses have dramatically impacted and healed me; I see them as gifts from God, such beautiful creatures. I guess I could be today’s modern “God’s fool.” Francis put others before himself and I do the same ensuring people that they are safe under my watch. Whether I am caring for an infant or helping a person in dire need, I’m always there and one of the first to respond. “
Are you prepared for a disaster? On this Thursday, May
18th at 6:30 PM, we will be holding a Citizens Disaster
Preparedness Program put on by the U.S. Army NY National
Guard in our Parish Center. The Citizen Preparedness
Corps will share the tools and resources to prepare for any
type of disaster, respond accordingly and recover as soon
as possible. The two hour training will instruct participants
on how to properly prepare for any disaster, including
developing a family emergency plan and stocking up on
emergency supplies. This free event is open to all. To
register, call the parish office at 664-3354.
MAY CROWNING TODAY
Children in the parish will crown the statue of Our Lady

FROM THE PARISH NURSE
Anne Amann, BSN R.N. Healthier Eating Starts in Your Kitchen
Do you want to fuel your body with nutritious
foods without spending a lot of money? It is
entirely possible to make better food choices without taking a
bite out of your budget. Everyone has a budget and you can
optimize the nutritional value easily. The key to creating a
healthy menu is time. Fast food is convenient and cheap.
But, with some time and effort, you can create health-
conscious menus without devouring your finances. The best
way to ensure a cost -effective diet full of fresh foods is by
putting on an apron. To eat healthy on a budget, learn to
cook, if you don't know how to. Homemade meals are almost
always cheaper per serving than food in a restaurant. If you
want to save money, make it a priority to cook at home more
often and eat out less. Making big one-pot meals on the
weekend are relatively easy to be served for lunch or dinner
later in the week. Preparing meals at home will also give you
more control over portion sizes, which is often an over looked
part of eating healthy. Remember, most restaurants serve
entrees that are at least two serving sizes, if not more. Eat
until you are full and take the rest home. It' healthier and you
will get more out of your dining-out budget. Don't dine out
when you have a refrigerator full of fresh foods or leftovers on
the verge of expiring. When you eat meat, check out cheaper
cuts that take more effort to cook. Cheaper cuts of meat are
usually tougher and has more fat, but if you have the
patience to cook them slowly over low heat (crockpot) for
several hours, they will turn tender and flavorful. Many
supermarkets offer their own organic brands. The price tags
are often much lower than competing brands: Aldi- Simply
Nature Line, Price Chopper- Full Circle and Hannaford -
Nature's Place. You don't have to have a large backyard to
grow your own vegetables. You can use garden boxes or
containers. If you cook with herbs, growing them yourself is a
great way to reduce waste and save money. Use coupons
when possible to find healthy food for less. Website with
printable coupons: Coupons.com.
RCIA will meet this Thursday, May 18 at
7:00 PM in the Parish Center.
