(For those who didn’t get to see, or would like to see again, last year’s segment which was Session 1 of “The Tale of Two Brains”, of the “Laugh Your Way to a Better Marriage” DVD, we will show it this coming Saturday, January 27th, at 6:00pm in the parish hall. After the 4:00pm Mass, there will be a quick potluck dinner for those who would like to bring something to share. (You don’t have to bring a lot – with potlucks usually there is too much food – but someone has got to bring something.) At 6:00pm we will start the show. The viewing time is 1 hour 13 minutes. Come and “Laugh Your Way to a Better Marriage.”

The Catholic Church defines marriage as “the matrimonial covenant by which a man and a woman establish between themselves a partnership of the whole of life and which is ordered by its nature to the good of the spouses and the procreation and education of offspring.” (Code of Canon Law, 1055)

What are examples of marriages not recognized as valid in the Catholic Church? First of all, the “ideal” and ordinary way for Catholics to get married is to marry another Catholic and be married in the Catholic Church. However, not every Catholic falls in love with someone who is Catholic. It is valid to marry someone who is not Catholic, and even to get married in a non-Catholic church, as long as permission was asked for and granted (i.e. a dispensation). In such cases, if a dispensation was not sought and granted the marriage is not valid.

What about someone who is divorced and remarried? If the first marriage did not receive a ruling of being annulled before the 2nd marriage occurred, the 2nd marriage is not a valid marriage. Remember, a marriage is for life, and the church honors and presumes the vows a couple made to each other to be binding even when the couple no longer does (until a determination to the contrary is made—i.e. annulled). An annulment is not just “Catholic divorce”. An annulment states that a valid marriage (what the Catholic Church teaches about the meaning of marriage) never existed in the first place, thus the person is free to marry.

What about a civil marriage that took place before a justice of the peace or some other licensed person? Again, Catholics are supposed to get married in the Church. Civil marriages, unless a dispensation was sought and granted, are not valid in the eyes of the Church.

What if your marriage falls into one of these types, or you aren’t sure? We, Fr. Joe or Fr. Scott, would be happy to discuss your situation with you. For many “non-valid” marriages, there are ways to remedy the situation.

Have a blessed week,

From Fr. Joe In the Gospel this Sunday we hear the call of the first apostles, two sets of brothers, Peter and Andrew, and James and John (Mark 1:14-20). This Gospel is often used, and rightfully so, in reference to vocations, in particular to ordained ministry (priests and deacons) and religious life. However, as special, as important, and as needed as those vocations are, they are not the ones that the majority of people will be called to. Some people will have more than one vocation, and one of those might be their livelihood—aka, their job, how they make a living. And for the majority who are not called to ordained ministry or religious life there are two vocation options they typically have open to them. One of them is the vocation to the single life. The other is the vocation of marriage. Someone called to the true vocation of the single life is not a person who is afraid or unwilling to make a permanent commitment (particularly in regard to a person of the opposite sex), but someone who is committed to a chaste single life. And those who are called to the vocation of marriage, are committed to the chastity appropriate for married life (i.e. faithful lifelong commitment to one’s spouse). Now turning specifically to the vocation of Marriage: Sunday, February 11th, is World Marriage Day. On Saturday, February 3rd, (yes, a week early) our parish will host a special evening in the Parish Center for those who wish to celebrate and support the vocation and sanctity of their sacramental marriage as lived out in the life of the Church. The evening will include dinner, viewing Session 2 of “The Tale of Two Brains” of the entertaining DVD “Laugh Your Way To a Better Marriage” by Mark Gungor, a time of prayer for the vocation of marriage, and an opportunity for couples to renew before God their commitment to live their marriage in holiness. The evening is for any couple whose marriage is sacramental, or valid, according to the laws of the Catholic Church, whether newly married, or even those married for 100 years! [See the text box in the next column for the Catholic definition of marriage and some examples of invalid marriages.] This “Celebration of Marriage” is free of charge. However, the seating capacity for this event is limited to 240 people (i.e. 120 couples), so to help us plan for this event, admittance will be by ticket only. The free tickets are available through the parish office.

Doors will open at 5:15pm and dinner served at 6:00pm. A new addition to this year’s event is a free introductory lesson in cha-cha and salsa dancing during the gathering time before dinner. The evening should conclude around 8:00pm. While this evening of celebrating marriage is free of charge, the deadline for picking up tickets is Wednesday, January 31st.

Stewardship in Our Readings There is a certain urgency in today’s Gospel as Jesus

calls His first disciples—Andrew and Simon, James and John. Each one follows Jesus immediately,

unhesitatingly abandoning nets and boats and father and fellow-workers. To what is Jesus calling me—

at this moment, in these circumstances? What will I need to abandon in order to follow Him?

What is National Catholic Schools Week?

January 28—February 3

National Catholic Schools Week is the annual celebration of Catholic education in the United States. It starts the last Sun-day in January and runs all week, which in 2018 is January 28—February 3. The theme for the National Catholic Schools Week 2018 is “Learn. Serve. Lead. Succeed.” Schools typically observe the annual celebration week with Masses, open houses and other activities for students, families, parishioners and community members. Through these events, schools focus on the value that Catholic education provides to young people and its contributions to our church, our communities and our nation. “Why We’re Catholic”

our newest book in our book program

Here’s that ONE BOOK about the faith that is literally for anyone: friends, family, those of other faiths,

believers, and even non-believers! How can you believe all that stuff? This is the number-one question Catholics get asked—and, sometimes, we ask ourselves. Why do we believe that God exists, that he became a man and came to save us, that what looks like a wafer of bread is actually his body? Why do we believe that he inspired a holy book and founded an infallible Church to teach us the one true way to live? Ever since he became Catholic, Trent

Horn has spent a lot of time answering these questions, trying to explain to friends, family, and total strangers the reasons for his faith. Some didn’t believe in God, or even in the existence of truth. Others said they were spiritual but didn’t think you needed religion to be happy. Some were Christians who thought Catholic doctrines over-complicated the pure gospel. And some were fellow Catholics who had a hard time understanding everything they professed to believe on Sunday. Why We’re Catholic assembles the clearest, friendliest, most helpful answers that Trent learned to give to all these people and more. Beginning with how we can know reality and ending with our hope of eternal life, it’s the perfect way to help skeptics and seekers (or Catholics who want to firm up their faith) understand the evidence that bolsters our belief—and brings us joy. This book is available to everyone at Church entrances!

Plans are in the works for our annual paczki sale. Enjoy all the flavors you’ve come to love from our paczki sales in the

past (raisin, date, plain, frosted and jelly filled).

Date of Sale Paczki will be available for $8.00/dozen at the All Saints Parish Center on Saturday, February 10th beginning at 2 PM and will continue to be sold before and after the 4 PM Mass, and from 8:00 am—1:00 pm on Sunday, or until sold out. Sorry, no pre-orders.

Wish List Donations of the following would be greatly appreciated and can be dropped off at the parish office flour—butter -powder or granulated sugar
