This projects aims at creating awareness on the value and use of water conservation, spread of HIV/AIDS, bacterial growth and the benefits of a cleaner environment. We focus on the youth primarily in KG, elementary, and high schools. By teaching students and giving training to cleaning services in the school. Volunteers that chooses this Impactful project would: get trainings from chemical industries on how to use the products, get a chance to design curriculum for the students for the next five coming weeks, water conservation, teach about bacterial growth, what HIV/AIDS means and its effect, and on how to keep the environment clean. The schools would plant trees (if we have permission from the school), clean the school, and have Q&A on our go green day in each school.

Ethiopia, officially known as the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, is a country located in the Horn of Africa. It is bordered by

Eritrea to the north and northeast, Djibouti and Somalia to the east, Sudan and South Sudan to the

west, and Kenya to the south. With about 87.9 million inhabitants, Ethiopia is the most populous

landlocked country in the world, as well as the second-most populated nation on the African

continent. It occupies a total area of 1,100,000 square kilometers (420,000 sq. mi), and its capital

and largest city is Addis Ababa.

The predominant climate type is tropical monsoon, with wide topographic-induced variation. The Ethiopian Highlands cover most of the country and have a climate which is generally considerably cooler than other regions at similar proximity to the Equator. Most of the country's major cities are located at elevations of around 2,000–2,500 m (6,562–8,202 ft.).

Climate

Ethiopian Seasons

Kiremt or Meher (Summer) - June, July and August are the summer season.

Heavy rain falls in these three months.

Tseday (Spring) - September, October and November are the spring season

sometime known as the harvest season.

Bega (Winter) - December, January and February are the dry season with frost

in morning specially in January.

Belg (Autumn) - March, April and May are the autumn season with occasional

showers. May is the hottest month in Ethiopia. 2

Culture Ethiopia has a diverse mix of ethnic and linguistic backgrounds. It is a country with more than 80 different ethnic groups each with its own language, culture, custom and tradition. One of the most significant areas of Ethiopian culture is its literature, which is represented predominantly by translations from ancient Greek and Hebrew religious texts into the ancient language Ge'ez, modern Amharic and Tigrigna languages.

3

Page 15: Aiesec in commerce reception and project booklet

Religion

Ethiopia has close historical ties with all three of the world's major Abrahamic religions. In the 4th century, the

region was one of the first in the world to officially adopt Christianity as the state religion. While no longer

distinguished as a state religion, it remains the majority faith. There is also a substantial Muslim demographic,

representing about a third of the population. Ethiopia is also the site of the first Hijra in Islamic history. A town in

the Tigray Region, Negash is the oldest Muslim settlement in Africa. Until the 1980s, a substantial population of

Ethiopian Jews (Beta Israel) resided in Ethiopia.. Other religions also reside.

(ጨጨብሣ), marqa, chukko, michirra and dhanga etc.

Languages

The principle Semitic language spoken in the north-western and central part of the country is Amharic,

which is also the official language of the modern state. Other main languages are Tigrigna, Guraginya,

Adarinya, Afan Oromo, Somalinya, Sidaminya, Afarinya, Gumuz, Berta and Anuak. As of 2007 Census:

.Oromo (33.8%), Amharic (29.3%), Somali (6.25%), Tigrinya (5.86%), Sidamo (4.04%), Welaytta

(2.21%), Gurage (2.01%), Afar (1.74%), Hadiyya (1.70%), Gamo (1.45%),Other (11.64%).

Cuisine

Typical Ethiopian cuisine: Injera (traditional large, spongy, pancake

like, soft, bread made of teff (flour and water) and several kinds of

wat (stew). There are many varieties of wat, e.g. chicken, beef, lamb,

vegetables, lentils, and ground split peas stewed with hot spice called

berbere. Wat is served by placing it on top of the injera which is

served in a mesob (large basket tray). The food is eaten with fingers

by tearing off a piece of injera and scoop up the entrées and side

dishes with the enjera. In Ethiopia, it is common to eat from the same

dish in the center of the table with a group of people. It is also a

common custom to feed others in your group with your own hands –

a tradition referred to as "gursha“.

Other types of food are: Kitfo (ክትፎ), Tihlo (ጥሕሎ) Chechebsa etc. 4

The favorite national drink of Ethiopians is bunna (coffee). Bunna is drunk in Ethiopia in a unique and traditional way known as a "coffee ceremony". First the coffee is roasted, then ground and placed in a Jebena (coffee pot) with boiling water. When ready it is then served to people in little cups, up to three times per ceremony. Other locally produced beverages are tella and tej, which are served and drunk on major religious festivals, Saints Days and weddings and are also found local houses.

Music The music of Ethiopia is extremely diverse, with each of the country's 80 ethnic groups being associated with unique sounds

Naming Ethiopians have a different naming system to the family name-based Western system. Children add the given names of their father and paternal grandfather consecutively to their own given name. For compatibility purposes, as is done in passports, the grandfather's given name is taken as a family surname, and a person's given name and his/her

father's given name form the first name.

Sports The main sports in Ethiopia are athletics (particularly long distance running) and football. Ethiopian athletes have won many Olympic gold medals in track and field, most of them in long distance running. Haile Gebrselassie is a world-renowned long distance runner with several world record in his belt. Another sportsman, Kenenisa Bekele, is also a dominant runner, particularly in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters in which he holds the world records

Costume Although it differs with the ethnicities, the Ethiopian traditional costume is made of woven cotton. Ethiopian men and women wear this traditional costume called gabbi or Netella.

Like the Coptic calendar, the Ethiopic calendar has twelve months of exactly 30 days each plus five or six epagomenal days, which comprise a thirteenth month. The Ethiopian months begin on the same days as those of the Coptic calendar, but their names are in Ge'ez. The sixth epagomenal day is added every four years without exception on August 29 of the Julian calendar, six months before the Julian leap day. Thus the first day of the Ethiopian year, 1 Mäskäräm, for years between 1901 and 2099 (inclusive), is usually September 11 (Gregorian). It, however, falls on September 12 in years before the Gregorian leap year.

Calendar

Time Time in Ethiopia is counted differently from in many Western countries. The Ethiopian day is reckoned as beginning at 6 AM as opposed to 12 AM, concurrently with sunrise throughout the year. To convert between the Ethiopian clock and Western clocks, one must add (or subtract) 6 hours to the Western time. For example, 2 AM local Addis Ababa time is called "8 at night" in Ethiopia, while 8 PM is called "2 in the evening.

We call this 2:50 evening/morning
