ECO DINE, which collects and recycles cooking oil from local restaurants, partners with chefs who teach culinary skills and about the sustainability of our food chain and its supply. BE A HOLIDAYCalgary, Take Action

HERO!Calgary's most vulnerable children need you now, more than ever...

For the Ginter’s, a family of eight, a special group of Heroes came together to support the family during a diffi cult Christmas shortly after Dad, Jake, suffered his fourth stroke. Through Boys & Girls Clubs of Calgary’s Adopt-a-Family Holiday Campaign, the Ginter family was matched with a caring team from Urban Systems Ltd. One of over 20 caring corporate and individual donors who take the job of holiday helping seriously.

“The day we were nominated for Adopt-a-Family I went to visit Jake in the hospital and shared the news and said to him “we don’t have to worry about Christmas this year.” It was such an amazing gift, and we sat together in the hospital crying with joy.” said Diane Ginter.

For Urban Systems, the appreciation expressed during the delivery of the gifts reinforces why they participate in the program and how it makes a direct impact. While Diane said, “They just kept coming in and out of our house; four Urban Systems employees just kept walking in with more and more gifts, and I just stood there in shock.”

Without the fi nancial and emotional stress that can accompany the holidays, Diane and Jake were able to focus on recovery, and on Christmas morning the kids were surprised when dad was out of his wheelchair and walked into the living room with his new walker. “That was our Christmas gift from Dad,” said Diane.

In the current economic downturn, we have seen an increase in the number of families in need. Melissa Silverstein from geoLOGIC Systems said, “hearing about families in our community who are down on their luck or just having a tough time is hard, but knowing we are able to provide them with a little extra Christmas cheer motivated our team to come together to help - because really that’s what the season is all about”.

For The Toni Kohn-Woodward Foundation (TKW), being a hero fi ts with their mission to support young women at risk, to empower them to create a healthy social, educational and physical foundation to design a life they love.

As a foundation, TKW decided to choose Boys & Girls Clubs of Calgary as the recipient for Toni’s Ride 2016, which raised $20,000 for our Script Program. In the fall, TKW furthered their commitment to the community when they became the newest funder to the Haven’s Way Program; a housing program for young women experiencing considerable housing instability, alongside additional risks such as mental and physical health, addictions, trauma, family confl ict, violence and exploitation.

Being a Hero is not only for corporations or foundations, but individuals also make a difference each year by choosing to donate to one of our programs.

This year we had a unique and special donation at our Bowness Club. The connection started with Thomas Bliek, who attended the Montgomery Club as a child. Years later the Club was still close to Thomas, who was a world ranked pool player, donated his pool table to the Bowness Club because he had such fond memories of the Club in Montgomery. Now, Thomas’ grandchildren participate in our Ready, Set, Go! Preschool program.

Because Tom was a mentor to many young people, when he passed away in May 2016 he requested that in lieu of fl owers or other gifts to the family, donations go towards the Boys & Girls Clubs Bowness Club. Thanks to the Bliek family, over $1,300 was donated to the Bowness Club by nine individuals.

One person can make a different for a child or youth in need. Even fi ve dollars can provide homeless youth with the essential gifts of warmth and food during Calgary’s bitter winter.

At the beginning of the year, I knew 2016 would be an interesting year for our agency, and we have been challenged in unimaginable ways to meet increased demand for services. Yet, amidst these challenges our donors, supporters, employees and volunteers saw opportunity. They saw opportunity to build new partnerships, launch innovative fundraising campaigns and bring communities together.

Despite heavy economic pressure we found a way to continue to provide a safe place for vulnerable children and youth in more than 40 programs in every quadrant of our great city.

It’s not to say it has been easy. Food scarcity continues to be a problem in our city as families struggle with prolonged job loss. In our Food and Nutrition in Schools (FANS) program alone, we saw an increase in requests from Calgary schools to provide healthy breakfast and snacks to children coming to school hungry. And despite seeing an increased demand for services, at a time when we needed them most, corporate donations declined more than 40% from the same time last year.

As I refl ect on 2016, I am proud of what we accomplished and am amazed by what committed individuals can do to make a real difference for our community. In times of boom and bust, Calgarians have shown they are strong, but every day I hear compelling stories of how together we are stronger. Together, we can be the inspiring and empowering force that changes the lives of Calgary’s most vulnerable children and youth. Together, our kids don’t have to go hungry, sleep outside in the cold, or live in harm’s way.

We rely on the generous support of our community, and this year the need is the greatest I have seen in my 43 years with Boys & Girls Clubs of Calgary. To ensure we can continue to offer safe places for children and youth who need us most, fi nancial contributions can be made three ways:

1. Complete and mail in the donation form that is included in this issue of Achieve,

2. Call us at 403-717-2693, or

3. Visit us online at boysandgirlsclubsofcalgary.ca.

On behalf of our children, youth and families, thank you in advance for making a difference.

We are committed to changingthe lives of vulnerable kids and families by providing safe places and offering services and programs to meet the evolving needs of our community. It is our mission to ensure kids have the opportunity to dream big, work hard, achieve their goals, become self-suffi cient, and reach their fullest potential in life.

HEROES: ORDINARY PEOPLE WHO MAKE THEMSELVES EXTRAORDINARY.

On October 29, 2016, more than 260 people came together to make a change at the 12th annual Splash of Red Gala, held at The Glencoe Club.

During tough economic times, it is often the vulnerable who are impacted the most. Boys & Girls Clubs of Calgary has witnessed fi rst-hand the impact on Calgary’s children, youth and families.

Despite the economic challenges, never has the commitment and thoughtfulness been more evident than at the Splash of Red Gala, which raised much-needed funds in support of Boys & Girls Clubs of Calgary programs.

Funds that are raised each year at Splash of Red are directed towards Boys & Girls Clubs of Calgary’s Youth Housing and Shelters stream, which includes two of Calgary’s Youth Homeless Shelters- Avenue 15 and Safe House. A former Avenue 15 youth, Tyler, spoke to the guests about the impact of having a safe and supportive place to be and how Avenue 15 Youth Homeless Shelter changed his life for the better. Tyler’s speech emphasized the signifi cance of each person’s presence in that room and how Calgary is strong, but together, we are stronger. “They say home is where the heart is. Before I came to Avenue 15, my heart was nowhere – I didn’t have a home. Avenue 15 literally became my home. I loved it there.” said Tyler.

Unfortunately, Tyler’s story is not uncommon, there over 300 youth sleeping on Calgary streets each night, but thanks to the funds raised at the Splash of Red Gala, Boys & Girls Clubs of Calgary is able to continue to provide the essential services to youth like Tyler.

Splash of Red would not be possible without our incredible organizing committee, sponsors, donors, guests and volunteers. We are grateful for the change this small, yet powerful group has made. Thank you for making this another remarkable year! Special thanks to all of our sponsors, specifi cally to our Diamond Sponsor, Qualico Communities!
