Congratulations

Congratulations to the Class of 2017! On behalf of the school and rectory staffs, I would like to wish our graduates the best of everything as they move on to high school. May all the faith, knowledge, and experience you have gained at St. Eugene’s serve you well in the future. You will always be in our prayers.

I would also like to extend a sincere thanks and congratulations to Mrs. Judy Kolk who is retiring after 23 years of teaching at St. Eugene School. Twenty-three years! Mrs. Kolk has influenced a lot of young minds in that time, and I am grateful for her dedication. We will honor Mrs. Kolk on June 6 at the Tuesday morning Mass. A special breakfast will follow in the Shaunessy Center.

Although Mrs. Kolk is retiring from teaching full-time, she still plans to keep active. She will be on the substitute list of teachers. Our school (and neighboring schools) can always use a good substitute to fill in when a teacher is sick or called away for an emergency. Mrs. Kolk is a person of faith, and I am sure she will be an active volunteer at school and parish events. May God continue to bless this inspirational teacher! On behalf of the parish, thank you Mrs. Kolk for the many years you have given to our school and parish.

As the school year comes to a close, I want to wish our teachers, students and parents a wonderful summer. However, while a break from studies is good, we do not take a break from practicing our faith. Attending weekly Sunday Mass is the most important faith lesson a parent can pass on to their children. I understand that summer time is also vacation time, but the obligation to attend Mass does not take a vacation. I am sure that a Catholic Church will be near any vacation destination. God is asking for an hour a week from all Catholics. In return, we are nourished in the Word, and in the Eucharist. At Mass we receive the Body of Christ. I pray that parents do not deprive themselves or their children of the great gift that Jesus gives us each and every week. Let us grow strong in our faith by coming to Mass every week! Yours in Christ,

SEND OUT YOUR SPIRIT Last week we heard that, following the Ascension, the disciples, Mary, and other followers of the Lord retreated to the upper room in prayer. This week we hear that, while praying in that room, the Holy Spirit comes upon them. Jesus’ post-Resurrection promise, recounted in today’s Gospel, is fulfilled: the power of the Holy Spirit comes upon Jesus’ followers. Saint Paul tells us that all of us, in some way, are given gifts of the Holy Spirit, gifts that can be used to spread the Good News. Today is one of the Church’s greatest festivals. Let us carry the refrain of the responsorial psalm with us throughout the coming week: “Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth!” (Psalm 104:30). Copyright © J. S. At the time of a family member’s death, if you would like memorials to be made to

St. Eugene Parish, please instruct the Funeral Home to use the following in the death notice: “In lieu of flowers, a memorial may be made to

St. Eugene Parish, Foster Avenue, Chicago.”

Envelopes can be provided by the Funeral Home.

Prayer with Scripture

We invite you to an encounter of prayer where you can stop from the hurry of the moment and listen to God through God’s Word, in silence, meditation, ad-oration and contemplation. In this short but intense time, we listen to a talk that introduces us into the understanding of the Word of God, which later, we reflect on and meditate in an attitude of faith, discov-ering what God is trying to reveal to us. The prayer is accompanied by the exposition of the Blessed Sacrament with songs to help the faithful enter more into prayer.

SCHEDULING THE USE OF PARISH FACILITIES AUGUST 2017 THRU JUNE 30, 2018 The calendar year for the use of parish facil-ities by parish ministries is from August 1st through June 30th. During the month of July no events are scheduled. This allows time for the extensive summer cleaning and repairs in the buildings. When summer maintenance projects require Au-gust scheduling, part or all of August may also be unavailable for use by parish and other organiza-tions. The calendar committee will meet after July 1, 2016 to approve the scheduling of events for the months through June 2017. All organizations re-questing space must submit the official scheduling forms (available in the rectory). Forms must be completed in full and returned to the rectory no later than June 30, 2016 No organization should assume that the space and meeting times available in past years will continue to be available during the 2017-18 school year. All groups and parish organizations are, therefore, reminded to await the confirmation of available space for dates submitted before final-izing plans for events.

MARRIED IN 1967? HAVE YOU REGISTERED FOR THE ANNUAL GOLDEN WEDDING ANNIVERSARY MASS? If not, there is still time to register. This blessing may be received monthly throughout the pregnancy.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Today, the languages of the whole world arise to God in a Pentecost of praise. In some American dioceses, the Mass is offered every Sunday in more than thirty different languages, including the silent praise of American Sign Language. Fifty years ago, the landscape of liturgy was very different. It was grounded firmly in Latin, which is to the present day still the official language of the Roman Rite. Very few people were fluent in Latin, even though in those days Latin was far more widely studied in school. Nevertheless, almost every Catholic was competent in the responses and chants of Latin since it is not difficult to pronounce. The clergy were normally minimally competent in Latin, since much of seminary education was conducted in that language. When the Second Vatican Council was convened, all of the debate and daily work of the council was to be in Latin. In the first session in 1962, Boston’s Cardinal Richard Cushing continually complained about it, and threatened not to return in 1963 if something wasn’t done. He convinced the fathers when he rose to speak in fairly fluent Latin in an unforgettable Boston twang. The next year, he returned, but with a simultaneous translation system funded by the people of Boston. The ordinary everyday language of the people, the vernacular, had arrived at the Vatican via Boston! —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

The Spirit within When we say, 'In the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit most of us get some images of God as Father and of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. But the Holy Spirit often leaves us baffled. Artists have depicted the Holy Spirit as a bird or as a flame from the sky. Rather than thinking of the Holy Spirit as descending on us try to see the Spirit as God dwell-ing within us and waiting to be released and spread throughout the world. With every kind act, word and thought, we awaken the Spirit in us, and then It spreads outward to others. We help keep the Spirit alive and active by consciously making daily efforts to serve and sanctify others. God’s Spirit of love and goodness will touch countless others– if we start with a single smile or simple act of kindness.

THE GIFTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel, Knowledge, Fortitude, Piety, Fear of the Lord. THE GIFT Ask nothing of God, then, but this gift of divine Love, that is, the Holy Spirit. —Walter Hilton

FRIENDLY VISTORS NEEDED Be a friend to a lonely senior.

The Seniors Assistance Center is looking for outgoing, caring and compassionate volunteers to visit with a senior citizen in the communities of Norridge, Harwood Heights and unincorporated Norwood Park Township. This service provides companionship to the older adults in our community who are lonely, isolated, homebound, or in need of assistance to leave their homes. One of the most important aspects of the program is the real friendship that can develop between a senior and a friendly visitor. Some simple and fun things to do when visiting with your senior - having coffee/tea and conversation; reading aloud; playing a favorite game; sharing memories; doing crafts together; planning occasional outings such as short walks or shopping when possible. For further information about how you can become a friend to a senior, call Anne or Carole at: 708/456-7979.

OUR MISSION STATEMENT

Our mission as Catholics united in faith at St. Eugene Parish is to help bring God to people and people to God. Through evangelization, education and being of service to each other, we strive to make our parish community a holistic community in body, mind and spirit. It is our goal to develop, support, encourage and empower one another in our parish ministries, so that each person can reach their human and Christian po-tential. We are enthused about the future of St. Eugene and the whole Catholic Church and we pledge our participation in that future. We seek dialogue and open communication with all parishioners in fulfilling the needs of our parish. While recognizing the cultural diversities in our community, we will strive to bring all people together in Christ under a common bond of faith, hope and love.
