From the Principal’s Desk…
Good – Better – Best
As Principal, I want to share with you the wonderful things that are happening at St. Eugene School. As I reflect on all that our teachers and students have accomplished this past school year, I would like to take a moment to acknowledge and thank you, our parishioners, who have played a big part in helping our teachers and students meet these accomplishments and goals. The school would not be able to do all the “Good, Be er, and Best” without your financial l support and prayers. Please know you and your family are in our prayers as well. Blessings for a fun summer filled with faith and family. Good News. . . The 2018-2019 school year was remarkable in so many ways. • A pre-school through grade 5 science lab and curriculum was a new addi on to our school curriculum.
Students had the opportunity to explore and think scien fically through hands-on experiments. We are happy to announce that we will be comple ng our science lab and curriculum for the 2019-2020 school year. Students in sixth - eighth grade will have the same opportuni es to explore science and think cri cally. Thank you to our generous donors and dedicated parents who helped to make this happen.
• Our seventh and eighth grade STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) students had the opportunity to design and program robo c cars in their computer class. Students in all other grades had opportuni es to explore STEM using various hands-on technology gadgets.
• Our younger students’ curriculum was enriched with different Chromebook ac vi es. They used Google Classroom to complete wri ng assignments and/or do research projects.
• Our hands were very busy doing God’s work this past year! We assembled and delivered over fi y Christmas gi boxes to Fischer House, an organiza on that cares for those who served in the military. We also collected items for our military men and women serving overseas. In January, we spent a morning making sack lunches for Uncle Pete’s Ministry. Lastly, we helped our Girl Scout troops collect items for children in Chicago’s foster care.
• Our gradua ng Class of 2019 has been accepted to top Catholic high schools in the area. It is with great pride that we report that one of our graduates scored the highest on the Notre Dame College Prep test and three of our students scored in the 98% and 99% on the Fenwick High School test.
• Our ACT Aspire tests results are in and the percentage of students who scored “Ready” or “Exceeds” increased by more than 4% in math!
Be er News. . . • Recently, the Archdiocese of Chicago completed an analysis comparing our school’s ACT Aspire scores
with the PARCC scores from nearby public schools. The analysis looked at the percentage of students at each school who achieved a score of “Ready” or “Exceeds” on the ACT Aspire test and the percentage that scored “Meets” or “Exceeds” on the PARCC test. Both tests evaluate math and reading skills based on the Common Core Curriculum. Those students who “Meet” or “Exceed” expecta ons on ACT are considered “on track for college and career.” The results of this analysis are a ached.

Best News. . . • Our school mo o is Academic Excellence. . . Rooted in Faith. We believe that every child deserves an
educa on that offers a rigorous curriculum in a faith-filled environment. We are asking our St. Eugene Community to promote St. Eugene School to your family, friends and, neighbors. Any NEW family registering at St. Eugene School for the 2019-2020 academic school year will receive a $200 tui on credit when they bring in this page from the parish bulle n. The credit will be applied to their April tui on.
I am grateful to be the principal of St. Eugene School and I am honored to help shape tomorrow’s leaders in a strong Catholic tradi on. Catherine Scotkovsky, St. Eugene School, Principal

DRESS APPROPRIATELY FOR MASS As warm weather is here, we would like to remind everyone that Sunday Mass is the most im-portant and solemn event of the week. It is not an “informal occasion.” As a consequence, the appro-priate attire for Mass should be characterized by modesty, dignity, and elegance. Clothing suitable for a picnic, or for the beach, can indicate a lack of respect for the Eucharistic Sacrifice.
RADICAL TRANSFORMATION On this Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, the readings describe anything but an ordinary time. They are disturbing and they leave us disturbed. The Old Testament reading recounts a young man’s radical break with the past to follow a new path. The Gospel describes how life as we know it is abruptly changed if we follow the call of Christ. The psalm and Paul assure us that such life-altering change is possible only because of the power of God’s love. We are presented with a stark choice. To love as God loves, we must leave our old lives behind. We must leave behind not just the bad, the selfish, and the evil but the ordinary, our daily work, and the important, our families, our lives. Loving as God loves requires a radical transformation, not a smooth transition. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

Prayer with Scripture
We invite you to an encounter of prayer where you can stop from the hurry of the moment and listen to God through God’s Word, in silence, meditation, ad-oration and contemplation. In this short but intense time, we listen to a talk that introduces us into the understanding of the Word of God, which later, we reflect on and meditate in an attitude of faith, discov-ering what God is trying to reveal to us. The prayer is accompanied by the exposition of the Blessed Sacrament with songs to help the faithful enter more into prayer.

SCHEDULING THE USE OF PARISH FACILITIES AUGUST 2019 THRU JUNE 30, 2020 The calendar year for the use of parish facil-ities by parish ministries is from August 1st through June 30th. During the month of July no events are scheduled. This allows time for the extensive summer cleaning and repairs in the buildings. When summer maintenance projects require Au-gust scheduling, part or all of August may also be unavailable for use by parish and other organiza-tions. The calendar committee will meet after July 1, 2019 to approve the scheduling of events for the months through June 2020. All organizations re-questing space must submit the official scheduling forms (available in the rectory). Forms must be completed in full and returned to the rectory no later than June 30, 2019 No organization should assume that the space and meeting times available in past years will continue to be available during the 2019-20 school year. All groups and parish organizations are, therefore, reminded to await the confirmation of available space for dates submitted before final-izing plans for events.
PRO-LIFE ACTION LEAGUE FACE THE TRUTH JULY 12-20, 2019 The Pro-Life Action League invites you to join the upcoming Face the Truth Tour, an annual pro-life public education initiative that reaches tens of thousands of people with the reality of abortion. From July 12-20, pro-life volunteers will hold signs at major intersection across Chicagoland, depicting the beauty of life in the womb as well as the horrible injustice done to the unborn victims of abortion. The Face the Truth Tour changes hearts and minds, guides post-abortive women and men to healing and peace and saves babies from abortion. For more information on this powerful pro-life campaign, including the complete Tour schedule, visit ProLifeAction.org or call 773/777-2900

SCHEDULE OF LITURGICAL MINISTERS
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Processions are life’s journey dis lled. We move with companions, aware that Christ accompanies us, as we move to the altar for Communion or to the font for bap sm, or carry a loved one to a place of rest. In Europe, the season of pilgrimage is beginning now, and tens of thousands of people are moving by foot on well-worn paths. Some take as long as six weeks to walk the last few hundred miles of the medieval pilgrimage route to the Shrine of St. James the Apostle in Compostella, in northern Spain. Those who make the journey by foot, hiking, or by bicycle, have a kind of passport stamped at villages and monasteries on the road. When they present this document at the cathedral, they are given the emblem of a pilgrim, the scallop shell of St. James. High over their heads at Mass, a huge botafumero twirls clouds of sweet incense through the cathedral. Cynics say it is to mask the odor of smelly feet. The pilgrims know be er. Seeing through the clouds the happy faces of those they met along the road, they recognize a foretaste of the welcome into heaven, and the joy of mee ng loved ones in the Kingdom of God. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

The cost of freedom Every year thousands of people visit
Independence Hall in Philadelphia which houses the Liberty Bell. The inscription on the bell comes from Leviticus in the Old Testament, “Proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof.”
Stirring words. But words weren’t enough in 1776, and they aren’t enough now. Talk is cheap. Freedom isn’t.
Freedom means defending the principles we believe in when doing so can be unpopular or costly. Freedom means giving of our time, effort and money to support causes and candidates that stand for what we know is right. Freedom means putting the needs of our country above business, union or political party.
Liberty is worth only what people are willing to pay for it. What will it cost you?

OUR MISSION STATEMENT
Our mission as Catholics united in faith at St. Eugene Parish is to help bring God to people and people to God. Through evangelization, education and being of service to each other, we strive to make our parish community a holistic community in body, mind and spirit. It is our goal to develop, support, encourage and empower one another in our parish ministries, so that each person can reach their human and Christian po-tential. We are enthused about the future of St. Eugene and the whole Catholic Church and we pledge our participation in that future. We seek dialogue and open communication with all parishioners in fulfilling the needs of our parish. While recognizing the cultural diversities in our community, we will strive to bring all people together in Christ under a common bond of faith, hope and love.
