Tropicana’s ‘Go Red For Women’By Lori Hoffman
A widely heralded 14-piece jazz band based in New York City will be performing at the Stockton Performing Arts Center (PAC) on the campus of
Richard Stockton College Monday, Feb. 4, starting 7:30pm. Created by virtuoso jazz drummer Tommy Igoe in 2006, the Birdland Big Band has become one of the most popular weekly acts at revered NYC jazz club Birdland, and high-lights a musical event at Stockton called Live at Birdland that features world music infused with the best of American jazz. The band’s newest recording, Eleven, has been nomi-nated for four Grammy Awards including Best Arrangement (two), Best Large Ensemble and Best Engineering (Phil Magnotti). The NYC weekly dining-and-entertainment publication Time Out New York described the Birdland Big Band as “a completely unique NYC experience. There isn’t another band like this anywhere — a music experience you simply must witness.” Tickets are $40 for orchestra, $25 for mezzanine, and $10 for children with an adult purchase. Once again, greetings and salutations. And what can I say concerning last week’s show at the Kimmel Center, which marked our 25th? It was amaz-
ing. If you were there, you know. The Divas for All Time — Darlene Love, Freda Payne, Candi Staton, Baby Washington. Individually they sang their hits, but when they did their duets, and then came together for “Stand By Your Man,” they brought the house down. It was a magical night.
Then the Salute to the Philly Sound, with the Soul Survivors, the Tymes, and Blue Magic, was the icing on the cake. People walked out raving and said that this show with the divas should be an HBO special. It had all of the elements — a 28-piece orchestra, the lighting, the sound — just an incredible evening. Thanks to all of you who were a part of this history-making concert. More coming your way — but now, let’s ask the Geator.
I loved your book and was already familiar with the story of how you became famous overnight. I have always been confused about one thing: The night of the blizzard, how were you able to play all your old records if you were doing a talk show? Did you already have your records with you, or did you go home first to get them? – Jacquie, Cape May
Good question. In the book you will read that I was doing dances at the Dixon House even before doing radio. And I always carried my records in the trunk of the car. So the night of the storm, we just shoveled out and went right to WCAM. That’s how it began.
Was Major Lance a one-hit wonder with “Monkey Time” and did he write it? Also, what was his real name?
No, that was the Major’s real name. And his boyhood friend, Curtis Mayfield, wrote “Monkey Time.” Major worked with Curtis and the Impressions, and on his own had several other hits, including one you probably remem-ber called “Um-Um-Um-Um-Um-Um” And here’s some-thing interesting: In the 1960s he toured England with his backup group, Bluesology, and guess who his pianist was? Answer at the end of the column.
On one of your radio shows you played two versions of “Funny (How Time Slips Away).” They were both great. One was by Willie Nelson. The other one was a more bluesy-jazz version by a male singer with a fantastic falsetto voice. Can you tell me who did that version? Thank you — M. Massi, Williamstown
That was Joe Hinton. Willie Nelson wrote the song and recorded it in 1962, but Joe had a major crossover hit with it in 1964. Another great who died way too young, at the age of 38, of cancer.
Answer to Major Lance question: Elton John was the pianist for Bluesology. As a matter of fact, Elton, whose real name is Reginald Dwight, put his stage name together from two of the members of Bluesology, Elton Dean and Long John Baldry. n

The East Coast seaport with the feath-ered mascot is not the one most area foot-ball fans were hoping to see in the Super
Bowl, but there are lots of cool storylines in the Big Game again, and plenty of local places that make for a fun hangout — even if you care more about the commercials than the contest itself.
The game will be played in the New Orleans Superdome on Sunday, Feb. 3, starting 6:30pm. Neither the Ravens nor 49ers have ever lost a Super Bowl, as Baltimore’s only other appear-ance was a win over the Giants in 2001, and San Fran has won all five of its prior tries, seeking to tie Pittsburgh for a record sixth NFL title Sunday.
Two big-name players have southern New Jersey ties, as 49ers kicker David Akers (who spent 12 of his 15 NFL seasons with the Eagles) lives in Medford during the off-season, and Baltimore quar-terback Joe Flacco is from Audubon. Flacco’s also the second University of Delaware quarterback to guide a team to the Super Bowl in the last 10 years, as Philly-born Rich Gannon did it in 2003 with Oakland.
The two biggest storylines are the fact that both head coaches are brothers (the 49ers’ Jim Harbaugh and the Ravens’ John Harbaugh, who for years was an Eagles assistant coach), and that future Hall-of-Famer Ray Lewis will likely retire after this game. Lewis was the MVP of the Ravens’ only other Super Bowl appearance. Baltimore’s other Ray,
star running back Ray Rice, played his college ball at Rutgers. Here are some ideas for great places to catch the game.
In Atlantic CityThe Golden Nugget in the Marina District will
have a series of free viewing parties with food-and-drink specials, $2 Bud drafts, $3 well drinks, $2 hot dogs, a Facebook contest to win a Big Game Super Bash for you and 11 friends, and other prizes. The fun starts 4pm and is sponsored by Bud Light.
The Ducktown Tavern (Georgia and Atlantic aves.) will have $2 domestic drafts and $3.50 imports, 30-cent wings and chicken tenders, 15 percent off menu items, and will be giving away a TV every quarter.
The Atlantic City Bar & Grill (Pacific and S. Carolina aves.) will offer drink specials, con-tests including guess-the-weight-of-the-lobster, T-shirt and sweatshirt giveaways, and a special-guest appearance by a former member of the 1980 Eagles.
The Mussel Bar at Revel will be having $10 Miller Lite buckets, $5 Palm or Bavik craft drafts, $5 wines by the glass, and food specials including BBQ pork-belly sliders, a half sheet of cheeses-teak nachos with caramelized onions, beef short-rib stromboli bites and more.
The Long Bar, Gypsy Bar and B Bar at Borgata will be offering four Super Bowl-themed drinks, including two for 49ers fans called the Gold Rush (Malibu rum, Disaronno and pineapple
juice) and the Kaepernick (Absolut Wild Tea, iced tea and lemonade); and two for Ravens fans called the RaveNation (Bacardi Torched Cherry Rum, pomegranate juice and Sprite) and the Ray Ray (Absolut, Bacardi, Cuervo, Cointreau, Beefeater gin, Chambord, sour mix and Sprite).
Harry’s Oyster Bar at Bally’s will be doing raffle prizes every quarter including a one-night stay at Bally’s, tickets to a variety of shows includ-ing four tickets to Legends in Concert, an “Ultimate Phillies Package” with Phillies apparel, a $50 gift card to Scarduzio’s at Showboat, a $25 gift cer-tificate to Tanger Outlets and more. There is a $30 minimum per person and the party will include special menu items.
Other places in A.C. to consider are the Chelsea Pub in Ducktown, Mountain Bar at Bally’s, and A Dam Good Sports Bar, Firewaters, RiRa Irish Pub and Hooters at the Tropicana.
Downbeach and BrigantineMaynard’s Café in Margate (9306 Amherst
Ave.) will be offering $1.50 Bud Light pints, $2 Bud Light bottles and $6 Bud Light pitchers, $4 Jack Daniels and Jack Daniels honey shots, and $6 PB&Js (a can of Pabst and a shot of Jack). Additionally, there will be lots of raffle items and a complimentary buffet at halftime, DJ Sparkles will be spinning in the Pavilion, and the Bud Girls and Jack Daniels Cheerleaders will pay a visit.
Johnny’s Café in Margate (9407 Ventnor Ave.) will be televising the game on an eight- by eight-foot projector screen, will have free giveaways, $2 domestic and imported bottles, and will offer its $6 Happy hour menu throughout the game.
St. George’s Pub in Brigantine will offer $2.50 Yuengling drafts and $3 bottles, a tray of 24 chicken tenders or 40 wings for $22.95, free T-shirt give-aways and trivia contests, plus a plethora of daily “tailgate” food specials like hot dogs, pizza, ribs and more.
On the MainlandChickie’s & Pete’s in EHT (6055 Black Horse
Pike) will be hosting an all-you-can-eat food package for $29.95 per person from 6-10pm. They will have a total of 28 high-def TVs showing the game including the “largest big-screen TV in South Jersey,” and will offer beer and food specials throughout the night.
JD’s Pub in the Smithville Town Center will have three 10-foot TV screens and 10 high-def TVs with stadium-surround sound televising the game. There will be free soft pretzels and hot dogs at half-time, $2 Bud and Bud Light draft pints, $5 pints of Long Island Ice Tea, and $2 “Pick Your Team” shot specials every time someone scores. JD’s boasts seating for 200 and the “hottest wings this side of Buffalo.”
The Brick House Pub at The Festival shop-ping plaza in Mays Landing have a $6 pre-game buffet and a free block pool. Pick a block and each quarter a gift certificate (from $25 to $100) will be given out. There will also be prizes, giveaways, live music at halftime, and more. n

As a headline magician in Las Vegas for close to 20 years, Steve Wyrick has grown comfortable working in big the-
aters with spacious stages and a buffer of 10 to 20 feet between the artist and the audience.
But Wyrick is facing an unusual challenge dur-ing the extended engagement of his “Breathtaking Magic” show at the Golden Nugget. The venue in which he’s performing, known as The Showroom, seats around 500, or about half the size of the rooms in which he usually works.
It’s so intimate that anyone who scores a front row seat for Wyrick’s show puts them about as close to the action as possible without actually being part of the show.
“The challenge for me is creating all of these really large scale illusions, and some dynamic close-up magic [where] the people in the first row can literally reach out and touch the magic,” Wyrick said recently after a Sunday matinee. “I do an illusion where I make a full-size airplane appear, and the people in the first row can almost literally stand up and reach out and touch the wingtips of the plane. That’s how close the magic is.”
This proximity to his audience is giving some-thing Wyrick, 42, has never had a chance to experience during his career. Not only can he see the facial expressions of those seated close to the stage, but he can hear their comments, too.
“What’s so amazing about this theater is that [the audience] is closer than they’ve ever been,” he added. “For me, I’ve heard things that I’ve never been able to hear from an audience before. Now I’m hearing people commenting during the show because I’m so close to them.”
In spite of this close proximity to his audience, Wyrick isn’t the least bit concerned that those seated so close to the action will be able to figure out he performs his big illusions and his close-up magic, both of which are his specialties.
In fact, Wyrick isn’t one of those magicians who’s up in arms over the TV series Breaking the Magician’s Code: Magic’s Biggest Secrets Finally Revealed, in which a magician — whose identity is concealed with a mask — shows how some illu-sions are done. “I actually loved it. I know a lot of magicians were up in arms about it,” he said. “Here’s the thing: The [magician] was showing some really, really, really old magic tricks from books back in the ’50s, ’60s. And quite honestly, the principles that someone like me or David Copperfield or Chris Angel use today are so much more advanced and so far ahead of what magicians used in the past. Just like technology grows, technology in magic grows.”
Wyrick, a Texas native whose career got a boost back in the 1990s when he was featured on the NBC series The World’s Greatest Magic, actu-ally felt the TV specials helped revive interest in magic shows and drove business toward his Las Vegas shows.
“I really looked at those specials as giving new life to magic. When those specials aired, we were sold out in Las Vegas,” he said. “The dynamic they

brought to the public was people saw them and [wanted] to go to a magic show and see if [they] can figure out how to do a trick.”
Wyrick also said the TV shows have sparked interest in magic among those considering a career in this mysterious art form and inspired those already practicing magic to develop new tricks.
“It pushes everyone to create new material, push the envelope and try and create new and big-ger illusions and more advance illusions.”
Wyrick prides himself in never resting on his laurels, or locking in a show and never deviating from the routine. He’s always developing new illusions and changing the show so that it never gets stale.
During the 75-minute show he’s performing through Feb. 24, all but two tricks are new from the last show he performed in Atlantic City sev-eral years ago.
“I’m using a lot of video integrated technology now, and I’m actually stepping into arcade games and pulling crazy things out,” he said. “So I’m real-ly passing that boundary now between live show ... and going into like a mixed reality world.”
The small showroom is allowing him to add extra flourishes to his routine that he wouldn’t ordinarily do in a bigger room. “[For example], I cut a lady in half on video with a full-sized chain saw [and] because the theater is so intimate and small ... I’m actually able to bring the feet out into the audience and let them touch the feet and see them wiggle. Because the theater is so small it’s allowed me so many more vehicles to be able to telegraph my magic in an entirely different way.“ n

Tomatoe’s Fights Back One of Margate’s most beloved Amherst Avenue eateries was down after Sandy, but not out.By Frank Gabriel • [email protected]
Despite her best efforts, Karen Rone’s expressive pale-blue eyes still water up when she talks about it.
“It” refers to the experience of witnessing the ruination of everything she and husband Carmen — owner/operators of Margate’s bayfront restaurant Tomatoe’s — had spent decades building.
Fronting Amherst Avenue just steps from the inland waterway connecting Risley’s Channel with Beach Thorofare, their multi-level corner restaurant was gutted, thrashed by Hurricane Sandy’s windy, watery wrath. In the resulting tempest, Tomatoe’s sus-tained well over a half-million dollars in damage to property and inventory.
The story actually starts with the res-taurant’s annual Halloween Party, held last year on Saturday night, Oct. 27. That evening, the final one prior to the storm’s landfall, provided some grotesque degree of irony for the Rones.
“When we got back into the building, it was still decorated, blood dripping from the ceilings,” says Karen.
Plus about four feet of briny water that had violently tossed everything within. Chairs, booths, tables and the entire, custom-made bar — recently remodeled by local art-and-design firm Chora Leone — were destroyed or had to be dismantled, along with the loss of every drop of wine and spirits. Even undamaged bottles, totaling near 500, had to be emptied and then trashed after expo-sure to those unsanitary conditions. In what sounds like a scene out of the Prohibition era of Boardwalk Empire, Karen explains, “It took a day and half, pouring them down the drain and then throwing them out.”
By late day Monday, the scene remained chaotic: “Water had receded, but there was just sludge, flotsam and jetsam everywhere.”
The following morning, their staff — con-sisting of 60 or so year-round employees — began to trickle in, eager to help in any way they could, for which both Karen and Carmen Rone are sincerely grateful.
“Thank God for our employees,” she said.The physical structure itself, built some-
time around 1950, luckily remained intact. And though a front-of-the-house sushi sta-tion — one of the restaurant’s signature design elements — was also trashed, the main kitchen, slightly elevated, remained safe. Karen jokes that they soon began “run-ning a soup kitchen out the back door for a month,” feeding workers and locals who
were engaged in the massive neighborhood cleanup.
Her gallows humor conceals emotions that are, to this day, quite clearly raw. Even now, three months later, the trauma’s lingering effect remains readily apparent just beneath a polished, professional veneer. Stopping to breathe deeply and compose her thoughts before speaking, she says, “People in general were just amazing.”
Most notable among them, the local public adjustment firm run by Thomas Lacovara, a regular customer. Lacovara’s offer of assis-tance proved crucial; by dealing directly on their behalf with insurers, the Rones were
able to focus on getting the enterprise itself back on its feet.
Another participant in the process was Ocean Home Bank, which immediately stepped in, offering a line of credit. Even other restaurateurs chipped in, with Ventnor Avenue’s nearby Bocca and Atlantic City’s Luke Palladino both providing lunch for workers.
For the next month or so, the restaurant’s daily business was run off-site, from the couple’s nearby home, which, it is worth not-ing, also sustained significant damage and is only now in the process of being repaired. Among the ruins was a neighboring prop-erty’s koi pond, whose former occupants were found floating in the couple’s yard. Carmen Rone directly supervised the demo-lition and rebuilding at both properties, typically working at the restaurant from 6am to 8pm, according to his wife. Karen even light-heartedly suggested he go into the construction business full time, given the amount of manual labor and physical energy he invested in those projects.
All their work culminated Saturday, Dec. 7, when the restaurant — considered by many, including this writer, to be one of the most consistent in all of Atlantic County — reopened. On the frigid January afternoon that AC Weekly spoke with Karen Rone after the reopening, bartenders and other personnel were busily engaged setting up stations for the dinner service ahead.
Now back to serving 60 wines by the glass and serving upward of 700 guests on busy weekend nights, you could almost believe nothing ever happened.
That is, unless you spend some time with Karen Rone. ■

The Used could have been called the Abused. The post-hardcore band has been battling ever since it emerged
out of Utah with its fiery eponymous album a decade ago.
The band overcame poverty, homeless-ness and chemical abuse.
“We had it rough,” bassist Jeph Howard says while calling from Pittsburgh. “We are not of privilege. We were literally hungry during the early days of this band. We slept on friend’s couches. [Vocalist-keyboardist] Bert [McCracken] slept in the park. It was pretty extreme but somehow we made it. Somehow we survived all of that. You think if we made it through that, we could make it through anything.”
Well, the band has hit a number of speed bumps but it absorbed its biggest jolt when it was about to release its 2009 album, Artwork.
All was good until the band’s former record label, Reprise, leaked the gloomy, dramatic songs. “If it’s a week early, I can live with that,” Howard tells AC Weekly. “But the songs came out three months early. And then we just didn’t get a push. It was so frustrating.”
The band hit its nadir three-years ago. Aside from record label trouble, McCracken was battling alcoholism. “It got to the point in which we didn’t know what the future held for us,” Howard says. “It was pretty scary.”
The Used, which also includes gui-tarist Quinn Allman and drummer Dan Whitesides, could have folded or tried to overcome the adversity. The band, which will perform Saturday (Feb. 2) at the House of Blues in Atlantic City, chose the latter.
“We were reborn,” Howard says. “Bert just became this different person two years ago. He cleaned up and came up with this new aura. He was so intense about the band.”
The Used worked around the clock in its practice space in Los Angeles. “It was
incredibly productive,” Howard says. “We came up with 60 songs.”
However, each of those cuts was scrapped by McCracken. “But we came up with a whole new set of material and that became 2012’s Vulnerable,” Howard says. “It all came together pretty seamlessly.”
Vulnerable sounds very similar to the band’s debut release. The overly earnest rock songs are loaded with hooks and energy.
“I think that has to do with the fact that we were so excited to make this album,” Howard says. “We feel like a bunch of survi-vors. It’s a special thing since we’re friends first, musicians in a band, second.”
The Used will release a DVD, You’re Welcome, during the summer. The project covers the band’s first dozen years.
“We have lots of wild footage and inter-views with just about anybody who had any-thing to do with this band,” Howard says. “It’s definitely something for the hardcore fan. We loved making it. But we love being in this band. There is nothing else we would rather be a part of. You have your ups and downs, but you stay together. It’s like being in a family. I think that’s documented in the DVD. You definitely get the sense of how cohesive we are.”
Howard believes that the group has a long run ahead.
“If we’ve made it this far with all that we experienced, I can see us staying together for a very long time,” Howard says. “We love being around each other and the thing that blows me away is that the fans are still so supportive. When we released Vulnerable, it came out at number eight on the Billboard charts. That’s pretty incredible for an inde-pendent release. The fans enable us to do what we love to do. Without them, there would be no Used so how can we not con-tinue doing this for years. As long as fans want to see us and we get along, we’ll be around for a long time.”
It’s been a relatively easy move from major label to the indie world for The Used.
“That’s been one of the great things for us,” Howard says. “Corporate rock is just a bunch of suits, who try to make money and they don’t really care about the music. It’s about profit. There are exceptions and once upon a time, there were guys, who cared about the music, but it just doesn’t feel that way so much anymore. We do what’s best for our band, what’s best for our music. We care about every facet and I think it shows. It’s not about the money for us. It’s rare to make a fortune in rock anymore. We just try to keep our heads above water. None of us formed a band to become rich. It’s always been about the music. We’re just trying to stay relevant and have fun.”
The Used, which has been a fan favor-ite during recent Warped Tours, loves the road.
“You discover so many interesting things when you get out there,” Howard says. “That’s why I look forward to going to places like Atlantic City. I want to see what’s out there. I don’t mean the obvious things, like gambling. I want to check out a cool sand-wich shop or something that is so offbeat. I’m sure we’ll find some interesting things in Atlantic City.”
On Jan. 21, the band released Vulnerable II, featuring a bonus disc with four brand new songs, three remixes, and three acous-tic renditions of tracks from the 2012 release. ■

What can audiences expect from “Mother”?
There are a lot of things. I talk about my mom, I talk about her a lot and I portray her with my accent, that’s just something that’s been a reference for a lot of people for a long time. But I talk about everything. I’ve found that people just relate to me. People relate to me kind of better. Even though I’m not a mother myself, I’m at the age now where people kind of look at me in that way. I’m at that maternal age now that I’m 40. And

people relate to me as a mother figure. So the show is not necessarily my own mother, or me as a mother, it’s the way that people perceive and relate to me and all women as maternal and motherly.
One of the things people love about you is your honesty. How do you find the courage to be so open and outspoken?
Well, I look at it as, really comedy is more important than pleasing everyone, which you are never going to do anyway. I want to have a good joke; I want to be funny as opposed to being boring. There are things that are more valuable to me than being accepted by everyone. As long as I put something out that I value and appreciate,
and that reaches someone somewhere and makes them feel happy and accepted, I’ve done my job.
You have been such an icon in so many areas, and one of them is as a voice for women.
Yes, well I think that it is so important to get the message out there to feel good about ourselves as women. In a society that places so much value on a certain body type, or certain look, it can be really difficult to feel content and happy with our body image. The focus is on one type of woman, and every other kind of woman is invisible. I think one of the messages I want to put out for my female audience is that there is no ideal body, or one definitive type of beauty.
You have a unique and enlightening sense of what is beautiful, and the concept of beau-ty seems to be very important to you.
Calling ourselves beautiful is the best thing we can do for ourselves. There is something very empowering about seeing yourself as beautiful, to say that no matter what society dictates as beautiful or what we should strive for, I know I am beautiful and no one can take that from me. When we call ourselves beautiful it encourages other women to do the same, and that something, whatever we are, is alright to be and we don’t have to chase it, or confirm it outside of ourselves. Beautiful can be what we want it to be, it is self-defined.
What in essence do you want people to take home with them after seeing “Mother”?
Like I said, I feel as if people can relate to me, so I hope to give people a sense of belonging and love and acceptance, espe-cially those who feel out of place in a certain kind of society. While the concept of mother-hood is centripetal to the show, there is so much included, something for every member of the audience on some level. I hope to offer a new, and funny, perspective on maternal figures, sex, culture, everything. ■

After taking a break from movies to run the state of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger is back on the big
screen in The Last Stand, a fast-paced, excessively violent and mediocre action flick. Surely the former governor of the state could have come across a better script for his return to the big screen in a starring role. (I’m not counting his cameos in the two Expendable movies.)
This by-the-action-book script about a drug cartel boss who has escaped from fed-eral custody features Schwarzenegger as a small town sheriff on the Arizona-Mexico border whose task is to stop this ultra slick bad guy in a specially designed souped-up car backed by an army of gang members clearing the path to freedom. The sher-iff’s support is a couple of less-than-stellar deputies plus a former military guy who is released from jail to help the cause.
Despite a totally forgettable plot and one’s realization that Schwarzenegger’s acting didn’t improve despite all the improvisations he did as a politician, the car sequences and several of the action highlights, especially a scene involving Johnny Knoxville and a gatling gun, are decent as staged by South Korean director Jee-woon Kim.
The supporting cast features an odd mix, including Forest Whitaker, who isn’t given much to do as the FBI agent in charge of the manhunt, acclaimed Brazilian super-star Rodrigo Santoro as the ex-military guy, Swedish-born Peter Stormare as one of the cartel’s top lieutenants, Jaimie Alexander as the token female and for comic relief, Luis Guzman and Knoxville. Harry Dean Stanton also shows up for a cameo role that is rather distressing.
Schwarzenegger looks old, and him say-ing he feels old on screen might be good for a cheap laugh, but it begs the question of what his continuing contribution to movi-emaking will be. If he can’t be an action hero anymore and with his limited acting skills, what are his options? As long as there are
producers out there willing to give him more roles, I guess we’ll find out down the road.

Statham’s Latest Tough GuyJason Statham continues his run as one
of today’s more effective tough guy action heroes in Parker. Based on a book by Donald Westlake, Statham’s Parker is the same character played by Mel Gibson in Paybackand going back even further, Lee Marvin in Point Blank. Both of those movies are far superior to this latest take on the character, despite the solid effort by Statham.
Directed by Taylor Hackford, whose qual-ity of work has been a rollercoaster (An Officer and a Gentleman, Against All Oddsand Ray at the top; Love Ranch, Proof of Lifeon the bottom) wants this to be an effective action picture that also features some emo-tional complexities.
However, after a terrific start involving a heist at a carnival, followed by a falling out among the thieves that leaves Statham’s Parker on the side of the road presumed dead, the film drags along to the point of being tedious. Parker seeks revenge and tracks the crew to Palm Beach where he hooks up with a desperate real estate agent (Jennifer Lopez), who figures out what Parker is doing and wants in on the score.
In the end Parker wants to be more than a standard action film, and those efforts, ironically, are what sabotaged any chance the film had to be good as a pure action film. n
