And we started with a cup of coffee We owe our name to Edward Lloyd’s 17thcentury London coffee house. Some otherorganisations also started there, like the entirelyseparate Lloyd’s of London internationalinsurance market. Edward Lloyd helped his shipping industry clientele to exchangeinformation by printing a sheet of all the newshe heard. In 1760, the Register Society wasformed by the coffee house customers and itprinted the first Register of Ships in 1764 to give under-writers and merchants an idea of the condition of the vessels they insured andchartered.

In 1834, the organisation was reconstituted asLloyd’s Register of British and Foreign Shippingand the first classification Rules were published. In 1852, the organisation opened its firstoverseas office, in Canada, and other officesfollowed around the world.

In the 1900s we began to apply our expertisedeveloped in the marine industry to otherindustrial sectors resulting in today's wideranging services. Our aim is to be theindependent third party of choice helping tomake the world a safer and more secure place.Because life matters.
