THRIVING AT RIGHT TIME, CUPID WINS REBELBy Frank Angst
With the classics right around the corner, Mi-
chael Tabor, Susan Magnier, and Derrick
Smith's Cupid is hitting his best stride.
After finishing fourth and second in his first two
starts sprinting in Southern California in December
and January, Cupid cruised to a 5 1/4-length victory
when trainer Bob Baffert stretched him out to two
turns in a February maiden race at Santa Anita Park.
Then, in his stakes debut and second route try,
Cupid registered a clear victory in the $900,000
Rebel Stakes (gr. II) March 19 at Oaklawn Park, giving
Baffert six Rebel wins in seven years.
"It's hard for horses to break their maiden and
then step up to this kind of company with this many
people around and win, but he did," said winning
rider Martin Garcia. "He's still green."
A son of leading sire Tapit, he was a $900,000
purchase at the 2014 Keeneland September year-
ling sale and is a half brother to grade III winners
Heart Ashley and Ashley's Kitty and to stakes winner
Indianapolis. BH

UPSTART WINS RAZORBACK IN 2016 DEBUT Battling wide in the lane, Upstart completed a long drive to edge away from Domain's Rap and others for a one-length win in the $350,000 Razorback Handicap (gr. III) March 19 at Oaklawn Park.
STONETASTIC SPEEDS TO INSIDE INFORMATION WIN Stoneway Farm's Stonetastic took charge soon after the start and never relinquished her lead en route to a commanding victory in the $200,000 Inside Information Stakes (gr. II) March 19 at Gulfstream Park.

CALL PAT RUNS DOWN UNTAPABLEBy Claire Novak
If anyone was going to beat champion Untapable
in the Azeri (gr. II) at Oaklawn Park in her season
debut, it was recent Bayakoa (gr. III) victress Call Pat,
who started the year in winning form and continued
that trend with her March 19 triumph.
The 6-year-old Lawyer Ron mare picked up her
first grade II for Miller Racing and trainer Brad Cox
with a last-to-first flourish in the Azeri when she ran
down Untapable inside the final sixteenth of a mile.
"It was your typical Call Pat fashion," jockey Joe
Rocco Jr. said. "She falls back there, and I just let her
do her thing. We just kind of picked our way through.
She's a nice mare. If you conserve her, she comes
running."
Call Pat ran 1 1/16 miles in 1:44.44 and beat Un-
tapable by a neck. The multiple grade I winner had
taken the lead turning for home but tired in her first
start since last October.
Both will train toward the April 15 Apple Blossom
Handicap (gr. I), a race Untapable won in 2015. BH

LOUISIANA DERBY, FAIR GROUNDS OAKS DRAWBy Mary Reeder
As the 3-year-old season heats up, post position
draws concluded March 19 for the March 26 Loui-
siana Derby and Fair Grounds Oaks (both gr. II).
Risen Star (gr. II) winner Gun Runner drew the in-
side post with runner-up Greenpointcrusader just to
his outside. Three sons of Uncle Mo will compete in
the race—Mo Tom, Uncle Walter, and Forevamo, who
drew the outside post.
The 1 1/8-mile Louisiana Derby has 100-40-20-10
Road to the Kentucky Derby points on the line as well
as a $1 million purse.
Fillies run in the $400,000 Fair Grounds Oaks the
same day, and the race has lured a couple of West
Coast invaders.
Land Over Sea, second behind Songbird in her last
two starts, seeks her first graded score from the out-
side post. Grade I winner Street Fancy also ships in to
challenge after finishing last in the Las Virgenes (gr. II).
Rachel Alexandra (gr. II) winner Venus Valentine
is placed in the number three spot and defends on
her home track. Other contenders include Rachel
Alexandra runner-up Midnight On Oconee and fifth-
placed Stageplay. BH
TARA'S TANGO FULL OF RUNBy Jeremy Balan
The late surge by Tara's Tango during her one-length
victory in the March 19 Santa Margarita (gr. I) was
impressive enough, but when you factor in the slow
fractions as she trailed the short field, her late punch
stands out even more.
Racing last in the scratch-shortened five-horse
field, Tara's Tango and first-time jockey Rafael Be-
jarano patiently sat behind Penwith's front-running
fractions of :23.69, :48.64, and 1:13.32 through six
furlongs, while 4-5 favorite Taris tracked just off the
pace.
"I waited for the opportunity and when we got to
the stretch, she gave me a big turn of foot and I knew
I could beat the favorite," Bejarano said.
Taris took over the lead in the stretch and looked
like a clear winner, but could not hold off the outside
rally of the gray Stonestreet Stables homebred.
"I was giving her a nice hand ride and when I saw
that gray head come up, I said, 'Really?' " said Taris'
jockey, Gary Stevens.
The Santa Margarita was the second consecutive grad-
ed score and first grade I for the Jerry Hollendorfer-trained
Tara's Tango. BH

LUCRATIVE SLIPPER VICTORY FOR CAPITALISTBy Alastair Bull
The appropriately named Capitalist effectively
secured a lucrative stud future winning Australia's
most important stallion-making race, the Aus$3.5
million ($2.66 million) Golden Slipper (Aus-I).
Bouncing back from his surprise Todman Stakes
(Aus-II) defeat, Capitalist settled three-back on the
rail in the 1,200-meter (about six furlong) dash for
2-year-olds at Rosehill before accelerating clear in
the stretch and holding out the late challenge of Yan-
kee Rose. Race favorite Extreme Choice was eighth.
An Aus$165,000 ($133,287) Magic Millions Gold
Coast yearling sale purchase, Capitalist is by Written
Tycoon, a grandson of Last Tycoon. Capitalist is the
first group I winner for his sire, who has had 15 black-
type winners from six crops of racing age, including
Caulfield Guineas (Aus-I) runner-up Rich Enuff.
Capitalist's dam is Kitalpha, a winning daughter of
Fusaichi Pegasus. His granddam, the group III winner
Compulsion (Danehill), is out of Bold Promise, like
Capitalist a Magic Millions Classic winner.
Bold Promise (Luskin Star) has been a fine brood-
mare. Her progeny include group I-winning sprinter
Miss Pennymoney, and Compulsion's Golden Slip-
per-winning sister Merlene, the granddam of
Victoria Oaks (Aus-I) winner Dear Demi. BH
RESCHEDULED SAN PEDRO LOADED WITH TALENTBy Jeremy Balan
Rain may have washed away the scheduled San Pe-
dro Stakes March 11, but the redrawn six-furlong
race now set for March 20 at Santa Anita Park got an
interesting addition.
All six runners from the original field have been
entered for Sunday—including grade III winner/grade
I-placed Toews On Ice—joined by last-out stakes
winner Iron Rob, who scored in the off-the-turf Baffle
Stakes for owner Kretz Racing and trainer George
Papaprodromou as the longest shot in a four-horse
field.
The morning-line favoritism, however, goes to
Denman's Call (2-1). The Doug O'Neill-trained North-
ern Afleet colt finished third, four lengths behind
undefeated Nyquist and 2 1/2 lengths back of mul-
tiple graded winner Exaggerator in the Feb. 15 San
Vicente Stakes (gr. II).
That effort followed a Jan. 9 debut score at Santa
Anita, in which Denman's Call defeated eventual Rebel
(gr. II) winner Cupid by 3 3/4 lengths in a 5 1/2-furlong
maiden special weight event.
Stakes winners Mt Veeder and Gold Rush Dancer
are also entered. BH

STALLIONS
JUDGING A STALLION BOOK BY ITS COVERS
A recent conversation about stallion books
with Matt Bowling of Bowling Bloodstock
reminded me of serendipitous findings from a
study I conducted years ago, on the relationship
between a stallion's Average Earning Index and
Comparable Index.
Matt and I debated whether 120 or 160
mares is the right number of mares to breed.
There are, of course, multiple factors to consid-
er, most especially stal-
lion libido, and there's
nothing magic about
those numbers.
Matt said approxi-
mately the following:
If you breed 120 rath-
er than 160 mares,
you have to consider
there is a reasona-
ble chance the best
runner for the stallion
bred to 120 mares
might have come
from the 40 mares
you didn't breed. If a
stallion breeds 120
mares, stallion owners
lose out in two ways.
1) Stallion owners don't get the extra revenue
from the incremental breedings.
2) They miss out on the advertising effect
from the runners not produced.
There are arguments made against larger
books. One is that many of the incremental 40
mares will be lower-quality mares, resulting in
lower percentages of top runners. Another is
that the market will be flooded with too many
foals by big-book stallions.
True, the incremental 40 mares that could
have been added will normally be of lesser
quality than the first 120. But, total revenue
from breeding 160 rather than 120 mares will
almost always be higher.
When I analyzed stallion books sorted by CI
in the AEI/CI study, I was surprised to see how
often a top runner came from mares in lower
CI deciles. More precisely, on average, I found
mares with a full point higher CI in a stallion's
book only produced runners with 17% higher
AEIs for that stallion.
If buyers at sales
are impressed by
the number of
good runners a
stallions has rather
than his averages—
and I believe that
Ashford Stud has
proved this many
times over—this
argues for bigger
books. I suspect
that big books have
a positive adver-
tising effect even
before the stal-
lion's first runners
hit the track. Some
breeders look for stallions with strong pipelines
of foals, anticipating positive developments by
the time their foals sell.
The argument that too many foals flood the
market and hurt prices is predicated on the as-
sumption a significant number of buyers come
to the sales looking for foals by a particular
stallion.
My experience and my reading of expert
commentary tell me this is the exception rather
than the rule. BH
