BREEDERS' CUP TRIPLE DOUBLEBy Eric Mitchellt @BH_EMitchell

For three fortunate breeders the improbable feat of breeding a Breeders' Cup World Championships

starter has not only happened, they have defied even the longest odds by having two runners in the same year. For the first time in Breeders' Cup history, three mares are being represented by two starters in the same year: owner/breeders Nancy Polk, owner of Normandy Farm in Central Kentucky; New York hedge fund manager Jack Swain III; and Carrie and Craig Brogden's Machmer Hall, each own a mare that has two offspring pre-entered in this year's Breeders' Cup at Santa Anita Park.

Normandy Farm bred 14 Hands Winery Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (gr. I) contender Daddys Lil Darling and Breeders' Cup Sprint (gr. I) contender and last year's TwinSpires Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint (gr. I) winner Mongolian Saturday. They are both out of the Houston mare Miss Hot Salsa.

Swain owns Belle Watling (Pulpit) , who is the dam of grade II winner and Longines Breeders' Cup Distaff (gr. I) entrant Land Over Sea (Bellamy Road) and grade II-placed winner War Story (Northern Afleet), a Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I) contender.

LNJ Foxwoods' Life Happened (Stravinsky) is represented by top contender Tepin (Bernstein) in the Breeders' Cup Mile (gr. IT) and Vyjack (Into Mischief) in the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (gr. I). Both were bred by Machmer Hall.

Since 1984 only 12 mares have been represented by two Breeders' Cup starters in the same year, including Miss Hot Salsa and Belle Watling.

Belle Watling is the first mare to be represented by two Breeders' Cup contenders in consecutive years. Land Over Sea started in the Juvenile Fillies in 2015 at Keeneland and War Story started in the 2015 Las Vegas Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (gr. I).

Swain said, with the exception of perhaps the Kentucky Derby (gr. I), it is the ultimate goal of all breeders to have a horse they produced in the Breeders' Cup.

"It is harder than you can imagine to breed a horse that wins a straight maiden race at a major track, so this is very satisfying and exciting," said Swain, who bought Belle Watling as a yearling for $190,000 and raced her. She only placed in two races out of five starts.

"She had some physical issues, but nothing major," he said. "Belle was a very good physical and has a deep female family, so we thought it was better to make her a broodmare."

Belle Watling, who is boarded at Brookdale Farm near Versailles, Ky., was entered in the Fasig-Tipton November sale but has since been withdrawn. Though Swain sells most of his foals, he is going to keep Belle Watling's Curlin weanling filly and intends to keep the filly by Medaglia d'Oro she is carrying.

Miss Hot Salsa, who died in 2012 at age 19, was the first six-figure mare Polk had ever bought.

"I remember when I was buying her, it was like taking a plunge off a high diving board. But it was the direction we needed to go to improve the quality of our stock," Polk said. "This is so gratifying because it justifies what we have been trying to do with our breeding program." BH

'CHROME' GETS FINAL PREPBy Jeremy Balant @BH_JBalan

After California Chrome's final workout in prepa-ration for the Nov. 5 Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I),

trainer Art Sherman expressed confidence his standout chestnut not only is doing well, but that he has an ad-vantage on the competition.

"If he's not fit for a mile and a quarter now, he'll never be," Sherman said of California Chrome, who covered six furlongs in 1:12 1/5 at his Los Alamitos Race Course home base Oct. 27. "Coming back in five weeks, some of these horses haven't raced in two, three months. Going a mile and a quarter, let me tell you something, it takes a lot out of a horse. A mile and a quarter first time out of the box is tough."

California Chrome heads toward the $6 million Classic off a score in Santa Anita Park's nine-furlong

Awesome Again Stakes (gr. I) Oct. 1.Los Alamitos clocker Russ Hudak timed the son of

Lucky Pulpit in fractions of :24 2/5, :47 3/5, and :59 3/5 through five furlongs. California Chrome broke off at the five-eighths pole and worked a furlong past the wire under regular exercise rider Dihigi Gladney to complete his drill. Sherman was looking for a work around 1:13, but wasn't concerned it came up a few ticks faster.

"The way he was going, it didn't look like it was too fast," Sherman said. "He was pretty well in-hand. Perfect work."

Sherman moved up California Chrome's work two days because of potential rain in the forecast. Originally scheduled for Oct. 29, the conditioner didn't want to roll the dice and possibly work on a hard, sealed track. The change in plans means a potential short breeze next week at Santa Anita. The Classic favorite will van north to Arcadia either Oct. 27 or 28.

"This game is like that. Sometimes you've got to change things up," Sherman said. "In this game, you have to play your cards right. I won't have to do much with him now. This is a key work."

Classic contenders already at Santa Anita, Nyquist and Frosted, also worked Thursday morning.

While Frosted cruised through an easy half-mile in :48 flat, Nyquist's two-turn workout didn't go as planned. But trainer Doug O'Neill was OK with how the Uncle Mo colt came out of the work—covered in dirt.

Nyquist with Mario Gutierrez aboard worked in company with Breeders' Cup Turf (gr. IT) hopeful Ralis, who broke off early under exercise rider Jonny Garcia and moved at least a dozen lengths ahead.

Nyquist was able to close much of the gap in the backstretch, moved by entering the stretch, and hit the wire about a half-length in front of Ralis. Santa Anita clockers gave Nyquist a seven-furlong workout time of 1:27 2/5, while Ralis received a six-furlong clocking in 1:18 flat.

"What do they say? You make a plan and God laughs?" said O'Neill, who was visibly frustrated. "The plan was for them to be a lot closer at the start, but Mario made up a lot of ground.

"He's covered with a lot of dirt, so it's kinda like a racing (situation)," O'Neill said. BH

RACHEL ALEXANDRA BREEDER MORRISON PASSESBy Alicia Wincze-Hughest @BH_AHughes

Dolphus C. Morrison, breeder and initial owner of 2009 Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra, passed

away Oct. 26 in Columbia, Mo. after a long illness. Morrison was 82.

Morrison was a stalwart in Thoroughbred racing for three decades when he and longtime trainer, Hal Wiggins, struck gold in 2009 with the brilliant daughter of Medaglia d'Oro who went on a campaign for the ages.

A daughter of Morrison's homebred stakes-winning mare, Lotta Kim, Rachel Alexandra captured the 2009 Kentucky Oaks (gr. I) by a record-setting 20 1/4 lengths to become the first top-level winner for Morrison as an owner.

Wiggins was the only trainer Morrison employed during that three-decade stretch. The two longtime friends and colleagues shared their career pinnacles with Rachel Alexandra, which Wiggins holds dear to this day.

"It was almost unreal. It was just like a dream come true," Wiggins said. "We were hoping to get good horses, naturally, every year; but we never, ever expected that we would be blessed to have a horse like Rachel. People would congratulate me, but what was rewarding to me is (Morrison) and his wife (Ellen) got to experience that, after 30 years, to finally be there on the top.

"He was so good to me and my family. He was not just a client, he and his wife were the best of friends to us also. He was just a very, very generous man. I was blessed for him to be in my life."

In the days after Rachel Alexandra's Oaks triumph, Morrison and partner Mike Lauffer sold the bay filly to Jess Jackson's Stonestreet Stables and Harold T. McCormick and she was transferred to the barn of Steve Asmussen. She would become the ultimate ambassador for Morrison's breeding program by earning historic victories over 3-year-old males in that year's BlackBerry Preakness Stakes (gr. I) and Haskell Invitational Stakes (gr. I) before defeating older males in the Woodward Stakes (gr. I).

The campaign earned her year-end honors—she also was named champion 3-year-old filly—and inducted into Racing's Hall of Fame this August in her first year of eligibility.

"He was kind, he was smart, he was generous," said breeder, veteriarian and longtime Morrison friend Dede McGehee of Heaven Trees Farm, which foaled and raised Rachel Alexandra and was home to Lotta Kim. "He was a little unorthordox at times but he was a father figure to me. He was kind to everyone who worked on the farm, he was kind to everyone who worked on the track. He treated everybody with respect. He will be missed, I will tell you that. I have missed him since he retired."

Morrison dispersed his Thoroughbred stock at the 2012 Keeneland November breeding stock sale. Lotta Kim was not included in that dispersal, as she was privately moved to McGehee's ownership.

Described by McGehee as "the biggest University of Alabama fan on the planet," Morrison attended David Lipscomb College in Nashville where he got an accounting degree. Morrison would make his professional mark in the steel industry, retiring as president of SMI Steel Inc. in Birmingham, Alabama.

Morrison is survived by his wife, three children, and two grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are pending. BH

SONGBIRD, BEHOLDER LOG FINAL DISTAFF WORKSBy Jeremy Balant @BH_JBalan

With the potential of rain looming in Southern Cali-fornia, several Breeders' Cup horses got an early

start Oct. 27 at Santa Anita Park, headlined by Fox Hill Farms' undefeated Songbird.

The champion 2-year-old filly of 2015 recorded her final breeze for the Breeders' Cup Distaff (gr. I) at the Arcadia, Calif., racetrack and cruised through five furlongs in 1:01 flat.

"She's training up to the race well and that should be her final work," said trainer Jerry Hollendorfer after watching the Medaglia d'Oro filly from the Santa Anita grandstand. "It was a nice, easy work and she galloped out nicely, too."

Hollendorfer said Songbird will walk Oct. 28, jog Oct. 29, and gallop into the Nov. 4 race.

"I couldn't ask for her to be training any better than she is right now," the Hall of Fame conditioner said.

Other Breeders' Cup workers during the 6:30 a.m.

PDT session included Melatonin (Classic), who worked under Joe Talamo in company outside of a stablemate and covered five furlongs in :59 2/5; Lady Shipman (Turf Sprint), who ran a half in :48 3/5; and Land Over Sea (Distaff), who worked inside grade III winner Frank Conversation and drilled seven furlongs in 1:28 3/5.

During the second of three exercise sessions, Spendthrift Farm's Beholder also logged what will likely be the final breeze of her career Oct. 27 in preparation for her final start in the Distaff.

With trainer Richard Mandella watching from the Santa Anita grandstand, the three-time champion started from the five-eighths pole under jockey Gary Stevens, scooted by workmate White Rock Lake on the inside in the stretch, and continued past the wire to log six furlongs in 1:14 2/5. Mandella had the daughter of Henny Hughes to the wire in 1:01.

"What we wanted—very nice. I said last week, that was the big work," Mandella said of Beholder's :59 1/5, five-furlong drill Oct. 20. "This was meant to be a tune-up. Looked really good." BH

CATCH A GLIMPSE TURNS IN KEENELAND WORKBy Frank Angstt @BH_FAngst

Gary Barber, Michael James Ambler, and Windways Farm's Catch a Glimpse and Stonestreet Stables'

Valadorna, trainer Mark Casse's two Breeders' Cup World Championships pre-entrants stabled at Keene-land with assistant David Carroll, both worked Oct. 27.

Casse has five other horses pre-entered for Breeders' Cup based at Churchill Downs: champion grass mare Tepin, grade I winners Classic Empire and Victory to Victory, and graded stakes winners La Coronel and Keep Quiet. That group is scheduled to work Oct. 28.

Canada's 2015 Horse of the Year Catch a Glimpse, with exercise rider E. J. Bowler aboard, worked four furlongs on dirt in :49 2/5. Keeneland clockers recorded fractions of :24 3/5, :49 2/5 and out in 1:03 3/5.

"She trains well over the dirt," Carroll said. "This track is such a good surface to train over. We were very happy to breeze over it. She breezed very nice, within herself. She came back bouncing around. We're very happy."

Casse confirmed Oct. 27 that the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf (gr. IT) will be the filly's target.

With Catch a Glimpse's regular rider, Florent Geroux, slated to ride Sea Calisi in the Filly & Mare Turf, Javier Castellano will pick up the mount on the multiple grade I winner.

In her last race, Catch a Glimpse faded to seventh in Keeneland's Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup Presented by Lane's End (gr. IT) after setting the early pace. Carroll said the 3-year-old City Zip filly came out of the race "in great shape."

"Just draw a line through it and move on," he said. "I think they're all entitled to run a bad one here and there."

Casse said he hasn't been able to figure out why Catch a Glimpse, who won last year's Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf (gr. IT) at Keeneland, didn't fire in her previous start.

"I still am not sure why she didn't run better in her last start. The only thing I can say is this, I've never seen her look better, she's trained well," Casse said. "The turf course at Keeneland this fall has been different than the turf course of last fall. This year, even though the turf hasn't been extremely fast, it's been very dry, and I just don't know.

"I knew we were in trouble after a quarter of a mile, because I had told (jockey Florent Geroux) that I wanted him to establish the lead. I said, 'I want you to

come away from there and let everybody know that we intend on being on the lead,' and he couldn't even do that. So, I knew we were in trouble after a quarter of a mile."

At about 7:30 a.m. Thursday, Valadorna, who is pre-entered in the 14 Hands Winery Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (gr. I), worked four furlongs in :48 4/5 following an internal fraction of :24 2/5 in what Carroll called "a nice maintenance work."

On Oct. 7 at Keeneland, Valadorna scored a six-length victory in a 1 1/16-mile maiden race. The performance came in the second start for the Curlin filly.

Carroll said Catch a Glimpse and Valadorna will fly to California Monday. BH

FOURTEEN TO LINE UP IN SPENDTHRIFTBy Frank Angstt @BH_FAngst

Brad Grady's Cool Arrow will try for a second straight stakes win when he faces an expected 13 other

juveniles in the inaugural running of the $300,000 Spendthrift Stallion Stakes Oct. 30 at Churchill Downs.

The Spendthrift Stallion Stakes, made possible through a partnership between Churchill and Lexington-based breeding operation Spendthrift Farm, is a seven-furlong sprint exclusively for 2-year-olds sired by any active or non-active Spendthrift stallion, including all Spendthrift-owned stallions standing regionally in North America.

Cool Arrow is one of nine sons and daughters of current successful Spendthrift stallion Into Mischief entered in Sunday's test. Into Mischief, who stood for $45,000 this year, boasts nine stakes winners so far this season.

Trained by Joe Sharp, Cool Arrow won a five-furlong maiden claiming race in July at Laurel Park before taking a two-month break. Shipped to Remington Park for his stakes debut, Cool Arrow scored a 2 1/2-length victory in the six-furlong Kip Deville Stakes under Joel Rosario.

"We're in it to win it," Sharp said. "For this kind of money, we're excited about the opportunity."

Designed to benefit both racehorse owners and breeders, the $300,000 purse has been structured with a unique approach to award $150,000 to the owners of the placed horses, with the other $150,000 allocated to award the breeders of the first-through-fourth-place finishers.

Specifically, the winning breeder will earn $60,000, with $40,000 going to the breeder of the runner-up, $30,000 for third, and $20,000 for fourth.

Cool Arrow, who will start from post 12, was bred in Kentucky by H. Allen Poindexter.

The other Into Mischief juveniles in Sunday's field are colts: South Sea, who won an Oct. 8 maiden race at Belmont Park; Hunka Burning Love, who won a maiden-claimer Oct. 16 at Keeneland; Menace the Dennis, who will make his career debut; Candy Snatcher, who won a maiden special for Indiana-breds Sept. 7 at Indiana Grand; Hollow Point, who finished third in his Oct. 2 debut at Churchill; and Theoryintopractice, who enters

off a fourth in an Oct. 2 maiden race at Churchill; and fillies: On Probation, who enters off a Sept. 29 win in a maiden special weight for fillies at Churchill; and Sister Nation, who finished third in her debut in a maiden special for fillies July 17 at Laurel Park.

With a narrow victory in the Sept. 3 Kentucky Downs Juvenile Stakes at seven furlongs on the turf, William Halwig and Brent Gasaway's All Right is a prime contender. The son of Dominus trained by Kellyn Gorder, will be making his first dirt start and will try to bounce back from an off-the-board finish in the Oct. 9 Dixiana Bourbon Stakes (gr. IIIT) at Keeneland.

Another top contender is Churchill Downs Racing Club's maiden Warrior's Club from the barn of Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas.

The Warrior's Reward colt hopes to delight his 200 club members after crossing the finish line second in his past two starts against crack juveniles Wild Shot, who went on to run third in the Breeders' Futurity (gr. I) at Keeneland, and Speedmeister, who could be favored in Sunday's $80,000-added Street Sense Stakes at Churchill Downs. BH

The ChallengeAn in-depth look at the

Breeders’ Cup Challenge races

BREEDERS' CUP WELCOMES 45 CHALLENGE WINNERSBy Frank Angstt @BH_FAngst

Owners and trainers are supporting Breed-ers' Cup Challenge races and, most

assuredly, the winning connections of those races are taking advantage of automatic bids to ensure their place in the 13 Breeders' Cup World Championship races.

Of the 185 horses pre-entered in this year's Breeders' Cup, 45, or 24%, are Challenge winners. Because the Challenge winners are ensured a spot in the starting field, that percentage, in terms of actual starters, will be much higher.

"I think we have 45 Challenge winners pre-entered which is obviously a good number," said Breeders' Cup president Craig Fravel. "There is no question that people make their racing schedules around the Breeders' Cup Challenge races and then hopefully they end up coming to Breeders' Cup. We're very happy with the way things came out today."

The international series of 77 Challenge races, which started in January with a pair of races in South Africa, saw 49 races conducted in North America and 28 overseas. After multiple winners

and dead-heat winners are considered, those 77 Challenge races awarded automatic bids to 73 horses. The 45 Challenge qualifiers who pre-entered represents 62% of those 73 horses.

Fravel noted that broadcasts on NBC and NBCSN have served to further promote Breeders' Cup and horse racing in general. He said bumping up the Classic (gr. I) purse to $6 million and the Turf (gr. IT) purse to $4 million likely helped those fields.

While Fravel said the field that actually starts the race will be the important number, he is optimistic that 17 were pre-entered in the Turf (including five Challenge qualifiers), and 14 in the Classic (including four Challenge qualifiers).

"It's a $6 million race. If you have a horse you think is a rational contender, that's the race you need to be in," Fravel said of the Classic. "You don't want that opportunity to pass you by. We're happy with the way things look so far."

The pre-entries also saw 38 horses trained outside of North America entered.

"We feel like Breeders' Cup is among the most international racing events around the world," Fravel said. "Everybody wants to be international but this one truly is."

The overall depth of the fields entered in this year's Breeders' Cup races was not lost on Racing Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert.

"You look over the fields and this is probably one of the strongest Breeders' Cup years I've ever seen," Baffert said. "I've never seen so much talent. That's what the Breeders' Cup was supposed to be, and so this is the year to buy a ticket. I'm telling you to be there." BH

"For her to give us those three years, and the fun we had with her—it's frustrating and I wanted to give her one more shot, but she's been great to us," Mandella said.

Living The Life, bred by Michael Begley out of the Machiavellian mare Colour And Spice, will likely head to owner Hank Nothhaft's broodmare band at Darby Dan Farm in Lexington. BH

BC CONTENDER LIVING THE LIFE RETIREDBy Jeremy Balant @BH_JBalan

HnR Nothhaft Horse Racing's Living The Life has been retired and will not run in the Breeders' Cup Filly &

Mare Sprint (gr. I), trainer Gary Mandella said Oct. 27.Mandella reported the Irish-bred daughter of

Footstepsinthesand has "some filling" in one of her ankles, and although that would not normally be a career-threatening injury, the Filly & Mare Sprint was going to be her last race anyway.

"We looked at it for a couple days (after her last workout Oct. 22 at Santa Anita Park)," Mandella said. "It really would not have been a career-ending injury, but she just wouldn't be perfect for the race, so we had to retire her."

She won the Presque Isle Downs Masters Stakes (gr. II) twice and just missed a third straight in her final start, when she ran second despite a troubled trip Sept. 19 at Presque Isle Downs. A synthetic-track standout, she also won the May 30 All American Stakes (gr. III) against males at Golden Gate Fields and earned a grade I

CDI: RECORD-BREAKING THIRD QUARTER NUMBERSBy Frank Angstt @BH_FAngst

In a record-breaking third quarter, Churchill Downs reports a 107% increase in net income for the three

months ending Sept. 30, 2016 compared with the same three months last year.

Net income for the 2016 third quarter reached $8.7 millon and the company reported record third-quarter net revenue of $303.4 million, up 8% from last year.

Churchill credited the strong quarter in terms of net revenue to an $18.7 million increase from Big Fish Games, primarily from casual and mid-core free to play game growth; a $4.3 million increase from the company's advance-deposit wagering outlet TwinSpires.com; and a $300,000 increase from the casino segment.

The company reports that TwinSpires saw its third quarter net revenue grow from $50.7 million in 2015 to $55.1 million this year. Churchill attributed the improvement to an 8% increase in active players. Those

players contributed to a 14.3% growth in total handle at the ADW.

The company did say adjusted earnings (EBITDA) declined $4.9 million, driven by a $9.8 million decrease from Big Fish Games, partially offset by EBITDA increases of $3.7 million from the casino segment and $1.2 million from TwinSpires. BH

JRA ANNOUNCES 2017 SCHEDULE, GRADING STATUSBy Naohiro Goda

The Japan Racing Asssociation announced the 2017 racing schedule and confirmed 288 race days will

be conducted next year, as in past years; but the JRA will now organize 23 stakes with grade I status.

With a race rating over 117, the April 2 Sankei Osaka Hai was promoted from grade II to grade I. Run at 2,000 meters (about 1 1/4 miles) on turf at Hanshin Racecourse, eight of the past ten runnings of the Osaka Hai were won by grade I winners, such as Japanese Derby (Jpn-I) winner Kizuna and Arima Kinen (Jpn-I) winner Orfevre.

Both the Feb. 26 Nakayama Kinen (Jpn-II) run at 1,800 meters (about 1 1/8 miles) at Nakayama and the March 11 Kinko Sho (Jpn-II) over 2,000 meters at Chukyo were appointed as "Win and You're In" races for the newly upgraded Osaka Hai. The Kinko Sho had previously been run in December.

The feature race during the final meeting of the year has been the Dec. 24 Arima Kinen at Nakayama, the year-end championship race in Japan for many years.

However, in 2017 the Dec. 28 feature race on the final day is the grade II Hopeful Stakes for 2-year-old colts and fillies. The JRA is awaiting approval by the International Cataloguing Standards Committee to promote the Hopeful to grade I status. BH

LNJ FOXWOODS NAMED OWNER OF THE YEARBy BloodHorse Staff

OwnerView announced Oct. 27 that the Long Is-land-based LNJ Foxwoods stable owned by Larry,

Nanci, and Jaime Roth has been chosen as the 2016 New Owner of the Year, which honors a new Thorough-bred owner who has been successful in the sport and has had a positive impact on the industry.

The award will be presented during the third Thoroughbred Owner Conference, scheduled Oct. 31-Nov. 3 at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, Calif.

The Roths campaigned stakes winners Constellation, Dreamologist, Golden Valentine, Nickname, Stays in Vegas, and With Honors, during 2016. They also established the "Horses First Fund" with Thoroughbred Charities of America to benefit a group of abandoned horses in Mercer County, Ky.

"My parents and I are truly humbled and very excited about the award," said Jaime Roth. "We have really put

so much heart and love into our stable and the horses so to receive this award means more than you know."

Alex Solis II and Jason Litt serve as the bloodstock agents and racing managers for LNJ Foxwoods. BH

INTERVIEW

BREEDERS' CUP DOUBLE-DOUBLEBy Eric Mitchellt @BH_EMitchell

New York hedge fund manager Jack Swain III has been breeding Thoroughbreds since

2003 and now has the distinction of owning the first mare, Belle Watling, to have two Breeders' Cup World Championships starters—Land Over Sea and War Story—in the same year for consecu-tive years (see story Page 3). BloodHorse Market-Watch editor Eric Mitchell talked with Swain, who owns 15 mares boarded at Brookdale Farm, near Versailles, Ky., about his breeding program.

Blood-Horse: How much does a yearling's potential value as a broodmare weigh in the decision to buy it, as you did with Belle Watling?

Jack Swain: With Belle Watling, I had hoped to have some positive results racing her but the intention was always—given the quality of her physically and her pedigree—to try making her a successful broodmare.

BH: Do you primarily breed to sell or breed to race?

JS: I generally try to sell almost all my yearlings, certainly all the colts. I have a grade II winner now named Miss Ella, who just won the Franklin County Stakes (gr. IIIT) at Keeneland. She went through Keeneland September as a yearling and RNA'd for $37,000. She went to a 2-year-old sale and worked fast but came out with a small chip. There was no interest in her, so I kept her. She has been fun and it is nice to see a homebred do so well. Each year, I typically end up racing a couple.

The numbers have grown with some purchases. Like the dam of Land Over Sea, I've bought others, and now have the daughters of some of my mares.

BH: As you begin breeding the next generation of your mares, how much does it help your breeding program? Is it even more rewarding to see those offspring succeed?

JS: With each generation we learn a little

more. We are at the point now with some mares that we know things about the grandmother and the mother. In making the matings to create the granddaughters, it is interesting to go back and look at the characteristics of the mothers and grandmothers, see what they physically could do, what conformation issues they may or may not have had, and what their temperament was like; what they were like as individuals. You never know exactly what you are going to get, but often we get what we expected, which is nice.

I think it gives a little bit of an edge to see multiple babies out of these mares. The knowledge you have of the extended family helps you breed a better racehorse.

BH: Do you favor certain body types or pedigree lines in selecting horses that are broodmare prospects?

JS: I always want to breed a racehorse first, rather than a sale horse. Most of my yearlings are sold and I want a good sale horse, but not to the extent that we breed a mare to what is fashionable and not what fits. We want to play to the mare's strengths. BH
