FLORIDA SALE GRADUATES SEEK FOUNTAIN OF YOUTHBy Alastair Bull
Two graduates from the 2015 Fasig-Tipton Florida
sale could give this year's March 2 sale an added
boost if either can win the Feb. 27 Fountain of Youth
(gr. II) at Gulfstream Park.
Zulu (Bernardini), a $400,000 buy at Keeneland's
2014 September yearling sale, was bought for
$900,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Florida sale. Unbeaten
in two starts, he races for Stonestreet Stables, Susan
Magnier, Michael Tabor, and Derrick Smith.
"We anticipate he's going to improve stretching out.
He'll need to against this group but we've been pleased
with what he's done so far," trainer Todd Pletcher said.
Awesome Speed (Awesome Again), a winner of
two non-graded stakes, sold for $80,000 at the same
Keeneland sale, and was then bought by Alan Gold-
berg (agent) at the Florida sale for $335,000.
The 2015 Florida sale also produced champion 2-year-
old male Nyquist and fellow grade I winner Mor Spirit.
Zulu and Awesome Speed face two unbeaten
graded stakes winners in the Fountain of Youth:
Shadwell's $2.2 million Keeneland September buy
Mohaymen (Tapit), and Jacks or Better Farm's home-
bred Awesome Banner (Awesome of Course). BH

FIRST MARE IN FOAL TO AMERICAN PHAROAHBy Blood-Horse Staff
Untouched Talent, dam of Bodemeister (Empire
Maker), has become the first mare reported in-
foal to Triple Crown winner American Pharoah (Pio-
neerof the Nile).
Coolmore Stud posted the news on Twitter Feb. 26.
American Pharoah stands at Coolmore's Ashford Stud
near Versailles, Ky.
Untouched Talent (Storm Cat) is a valuable mare
herself—Michael Magnier bought her for $5 million
at the 2012 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky November sale.
Consigned by Brookdale Sales, Untouched Talent was
in-foal to Unbridled's Song.
That pairing produced 2013 Irish-bred colt Finneg-
an, who scored a five-length maiden victory at Pimlico
Race Course last year racing for owners connected to
Magnier's Coolmore operation.
Untouched Talent's best-known offspring is Bo-
demeister—winner of the 2012 Arkansas Derby (gr.
I) and second in both the Kentucky Derby and Preak-
ness (both gr. I) racing for American Pharoah's owner,
Zayat Stables, as well as Mike and Tiffany Moreno—
but she has also produced the grade I-placed Fasci-
nating (Smart Strike).
American Pharoah is standing for a $200,000 fee
in his first season as a stallion. BH

Giving to Those who Gave so Much to Racing
buyers go about their business in advance of the
Fasig-Tipton Florida sale of 2-year-olds in training
March 2.
"I think people are down here wanting to buy
horses," said Gladwell, a second-generation horse-
man who operates Top Line Sales with his wife Torie.
The boutique auction, now in its second year at
the South Florida track, is packed with fashionably
bred racing prospects.
"I have seen a bunch of really nice horses just
walking around the shedrow," Gladwell said. "Every-
body has a buzz horse."
From his own group of five, Gladwell said several
have attracted attention and could move up further,
based on the Feb. 29 under tack works.
"We have a really nice filly by Distorted Humor
(Hip 17)," Gladwell said. "She's not the fastest horse
in the shedrow, but she has a lot of class.
"The fastest horse I have would be my Ghostzap-
per colt (Hip 41). He has a lot raw ability. If he puts it
all together he could be a special horse." BH

DUNNE SEES MORE DERBY HORSES AT JUVENILE SALEBy Ron Mitchell
Horses with classic appeal are becoming more
popular with buyers at 2-year-olds in train-
ing sales, veteran consignor Ciaran Dunne said
ahead of the Fasig-Tipton Florida sale at Gulf-
stream Park March 2.
"When we first started, it was all about who
could run quickly in the springtime," said Dunne,
who runs Wavertree Stables with his wife Amy.
"This week, all you're seeing are two-turn
(Kentucky) Derby type horses."
With juvenile sales on the uptick right now,
Dunne projects a strong sale next week.
"The sale will be strong, as it always is, but I
think it will struggle in the middle (price rang-
es), especially since it is a boutique sale,"
said Dunne.
Wavertree was the third-leading consign-
or of 2-year-olds in North America last year,
with 121 selling for $12.2 million. Based on
the strength of their offerings at the March
2 sale at Gulfstream Park, the Dunnes figure
to pick up where they left off.
"We've come down here with as strong
a group as we have ever brought in terms
of pedigree and the physical presence,"
Dunne said. "We have five or six colts I am
very high on."
One of Wavertree's offerings, Hip 56, the
only Curlin colt in the sale, was a $430,000
yearling purchase.
"Obviously the Curlin colt is a bit special,"
Dunne said. "He is a beautiful horse. He's
a big two-turn-looking horse. He is pretty
fancy."
Another colt Dunne is high on is Hip
81, by The Factor, whose first foals are
2-year-olds.
"He is the kind that makes you want to get up
in the morning and get to the barn," Dunne said.
Another pricey offering in the Wavertree
consignment is Hip 6, a Medaglia d'Oro colt sold
for $300,000 as a weanling and then RNA'd for
$445,000 as a yearling. "He is a beautiful horse
and he trains really well," the consignor said.
Among fillies, Dunne said a New York-bred
by Maclean's Music (Hip 80) and a Bodemeister
(Hip 36) should attract a lot of interest.
Dunne said that even with all the looks prior
to the sale, the under tack workouts play a ma-
jor role in a buyer's final decision.
"As usual it is just going to boil down to who
has a good breeze day Monday and see where
the cards fall." BH

AID FOR ONTARIO HORSE RACING EXTENDEDBy Tom LaMarra
Ontario Thoroughbred horsemen have a little
more financial certainty through 2021 after the
provincial government extended financial aid in a
2016 budget presented to the legislature Feb. 25.
The assistance program was created after the
provincial government, in 2012, ended a longstanding
revenue-sharing deal in which the industry earned
20% of revenue—10% for purses and 10% for race-
track operations—from slot machines.
Most tracks in the province were to keep slots, but
several were shut down in what was called a modern-
ization plan.
Rather than expire in 2019, the program will con-
tinue through 2021 with $100 million in "government
support."
The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp. said the
extension will "give confidence to the industry to make
investments and business decisions for the coming
years" and provide "continued support of rural jobs
and economic development in the agricultural sector,
particularly as they relate to the horse breeding sector."
The OLGC also said it "continues to integrate
horse racing into its gaming strategy" and in fiscal
2016-17 will begin to fund racing through a "provin-
cial transfer payment program." It hopes to establish
a long-term funding arrangement for racing. BH
RMTC CHANGES THREE THRESHOLDSBy Frank Angst
The Racing Medication and Testing Consortium
board voted to revise thresholds for three medi-
cations on the list of controlled therapeutic substanc-
es, and recommended expanding out-of-competition
testing that would include a list of prohibited sub-
stances.
The actions at the RMTC board's Feb. 23 meet-
ing at Gulfstream Park followed recommendations
from the RMTC's Scientific Advisory Committee and
Horseracing Testing Laboratories Committee.
Based on recently completed research, RMTC
board members unanimously approved revised
thresholds for xylazine and detomidine (two sed-
ative/analgesic medications) and omeprazole (an
anti-ulcer medication).
"The CTS list is a living document, as evidenced
by the addition of a number of medications since it
was first enacted," stated RMTC executive director Dr.
Dionne Benson.
In addition, RMTC board members voted unani-
mously to recommend to the Association of Racing
Commissioners International an expanded and more
comprehensive out-of-competition testing rule for
horse racing.
The recommended model rule addresses sam-
pling procedures and defines what substances are
prohibited.
The list, modeled on the World Anti-Doping Agen-
cy prohibited substances list, takes into account
substances unique to equine health under specified
conditions. BH

STAKES QUESTIONS AT HAWTHORNEBy Alastair Bull
Illinois Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association chief
executive David McCaffrey says it would be disap-
pointing if stakes are missing from Hawthorne Race
Course's 2016 spring meet.
Hawthorne has yet to finalize details about the
meet, due to begin March 11, but there have been
reports it could run without the Illinois Derby (gr. III),
carded last year in mid-April, or any other stakes.
An email to Blood-Horse Daily from the office
of Hawthorne president Tim Carey said "he is not
prepared to make any statements or answer ques-
tions until we make an actual decision on our stakes
program for the spring racing meet."
McCaffrey hadn't received any official notification
about the possible lack of stakes—but said if it hap-
pened, it wouldn't be surprising in a state troubled
by falling purses and a lack of legislation authorizing
slot machines at tracks.
"We haven't been told yet, so I don't think it's offi-
cial, but if it happens, it just shows how ill Illinois is,"
McCaffrey said.
Kentucky Derby (gr. I) winner War Emblem won
the 2002 Illinois Derby but the race currently has
no "Road to the Kentucky Derby" points available to
runners. BH
DECOUPLING'S TAX IMPACT MINIMAL?By Tom LaMarra
The economic impact of horse racing and breeding
in Florida has been regularly touted by United
Florida Horsemen, a group fighting efforts by some
lawmakers to decouple racing from gaming as part
of an overhaul of state gambling laws and approval
of a $3 billion gaming compact with the Seminole
tribe.
But those who analyze only pari-mutuel taxes and
licensing fees indicated Feb. 26 that decoupling—re-
moving live racing requirements for facilities with
slot machines or card rooms—would have minimal
impact on state revenue, which these days derives
far more tax proceeds from gaming.
Legislation that passed the Senate Regulated
Industries Committee would allow decoupling of
Quarter Horse, Standardbred, and greyhound racing,
as well as "summer" Thoroughbred racing at Calder
Casino & Race Course.
Gulfstream Park already has picked up Calder's
40-day minimum, so officials at the Florida Revenue
Estimating Impact Conference predicted no revenue
change for the state.
They also predicted that should Standardbred
racing at Pompano Park and Quarter Horse racing at
Hialeah Park end, the state would lose little in taxes
and license fees. The tracks would continue to offer
full-card simulcasts. BH

IMPROVED FACILITY WORKING FOR CHURCHILL
For years, fans enjoying Kentucky Derby day in
the infield could tell you how they saw a jock-
ey's helmet go by in the backstretch, but often
could relay little about the race.
That all changed in 2014, when Churchill
Downs added a mammoth video board outside
its main-track oval, allowing every fan to watch
the Derby—and any other Churchill race. Not
only has the "Big Board" offered an unobstruct-
ed view of every live race, it has even added fla-
vor to simulcasts of
Triple Crown races
for the Churchill
crowd.
The "Big Board"
is one example of
how Churchill's
upgraded facility
is meeting the
expectations of
today's sports
fan. In a Feb. 25
conference call
with investors and
analysts, Churchill
Downs Inc. offi-
cials noted that
while additions
of high-end seats
have received a lot of attention, facility improve-
ments have benefitted every Derby day fan.
"I think sometimes more attention is given to
things like the Mansion or the renovation of the
Turf Club, but we constantly look to make im-
provements where we see value," said CDI chief
executive officer Bill Carstanjen.
"We have made a lot of improvements
for all segments of the fan base, not just the
segments at the high end. I hope there is more
opportunity to improve the experience for the
more casual fans and we'll keep looking at it."
CDI chief operating officer Bill Mudd said that
since 2014, Churchill has seen the addition of
the Big Board, a quadrupling of restroom facil-
ities, increased pari-mutuel stations, and dra-
matically improved food and beverage offerings.
"I think we've done a whole lot for the
lower-level (priced) tickets; in fact, more than
we've done for the higher-end guests," Mudd
said.
All this facility investment is paying dividends.
In 2015 Kentucky Derby week saw a $6 million
improvement
in profits. In
September,
Churchill began
another round
of improvements
and seating ad-
ditions, this time
a $19 million in-
vestment focus-
ing on the Turf
Club and several
other premium
seating areas.
"We keep
learning from
what other
events and what
other people are
doing out there in the United States and outside
the United States," Carstanjen said. "We keep
learning of new ideas and exploring things that
we might do in the future, so there's no hard-
and-fast ceiling that we're about to approach that
I'm aware of."
There's also the benefit of improved seating
for the rest of the year. The 2015 Churchill fall
meet enjoyed a 3.8% increase in daily attend-
ance to 4,928. BH
