DORTMUND, HARD ACES TO TACKLE 'CHROME'By Jeremy Balan
Back in his namesake state for more than three
months now, California Chrome is set to resume
his 2016 campaign July 23 in the $200,000 San Diego
Handicap (gr. II) at Del Mar, where he'll take on fellow
multiple grade I winner Dortmund.
Since moving south from his Los Alamitos Race
Course base a week ago, California Chrome has been
doing very well according to trainer Art Sherman,
including an impressive five-furlong breeze July 16 at
the seaside racetrack.
"He's doing great—schooling great, galloping
great," Sherman said of the 5-year-old's week of
preparation.
Sherman also felt good about the 2014 Horse of
the Year's draw—sixth in the field of seven—for the
1 1/16 mile event, his first contest since a standout
score in the March 26 Dubai World Cup (UAE-I).
"That's perfect," Sherman said. "I like it on the
outside and it's a good post for him. He's won from
all post positions, but outside you get to see what
horses show speed and don't need to rush."
Kaleem Shah's Dortmund drew post 2, just out-

side of fellow grade I winner Hard Aces, in his first
start since he won the Nov. 28 Native Diver (gr. III),
also at Del Mar. The massive son of Big Brown began
training toward his comeback right alongside Califor-

Hronis Racing's Hard Aces, trained by John Sadler,
struck gold in the 2015 Santa Anita Gold Cup (gr. I), in
the absence of California Chrome following his World

MISS TEMPLE CITY TAKES ON BROWN QUARTETBy Frank Angst
With divisional leader Tepin away, Miss Temple
City and 10 other females will try to take advan-
tage in the $500,000 Diana Stakes (gr. IT) July 23 at
Saratoga Race Course.
In her most recent U.S. start, Sagamore Farm,
Needle In A Haystack, and The Club Racing’s Miss
Temple City defeated males to land her first grade I
win in the Maker’s 46 Mile Stakes (gr. IT) April 15 at
Keeneland. After that race, the 4-year-old daughter
of Temple City ran a credible fourth in the Duke of
Cambridge Stakes (Eng-II) June 15 at Royal Ascot.
Trainer Graham Motion said Miss Temple City is
ready for her U.S. return.
"I've been very happy with how she's come back
from England, otherwise I wouldn't be racing her,"
Motion said. "You wonder if the trip might affect her,
running against those conditions. But I don't see any
negative effects that it's had on her. I felt like when
she came back to America, I targeted the Diana, and
everything fell into place."
Drayden Van Dyke, who didn’t make the trip to As-
cot but has been aboard Miss Temple City in her two
most recent U.S. starts, returns to ride Saturday. Van
Dyke guided Miss Temple City to victory in her sea-
son debut in the Maker’s 46 Mile after closing out her
3-year-old season with a close second in the Queen
Elizabeth II Challenge Stakes (gr. IT) last October at
Keeneland.
Miss Temple City, who also finished fourth in a
2015 trip to Ascot in the Coronation Stakes (Eng-I),
has placed in the top three in all nine of her U.S.
starts.
Trainer Chad Brown has entered four fillies and
mares in Saturday's 1 1/8-mile race on the Mellon
Turf Course, including Martin Schwartz's Wekeela,
who enters off runner-up finishes in grade I turf
races in her past two starts. In her season debut April
16 Wekeela finished five lengths behind Tepin in
the Coolmore Jenny Wiley (gr. IT) at Keeneland. The
4-year-old Hurricane Run filly followed that by finish-
ing a length behind Illuminant in the Gamely Stakes
(gr. I) at Santa Anita Park.
Brown, who is looking for his first Diana score
since 2011, when he won with Schwartz’s Zagora, will
also send out grade II winner Mrs McDougal, two-
time Chilean champion Dacita, and grade III winner
Rainha Da Bateria. Dacita enters off a win in the New
York Stakes (gr. IIT) on the inner turf at Belmont Park
and Mrs McDougal will try to improve on her third in
the Longines Just a Game Stakes (gr. IT) June 11 on
the Belmont turf.
Trainer Todd Pletcher, in search of his first Diana
win, will send out multiple group/grade III winner
Sandiva and grade II winner Isabella Sings. Trainer
James Toner, who has won the Diana three times, has
entered grade III winner Recepta. BH

NO CALIFORNIA LICENSE FOR VALENZUELABy Jeremy Balan
The California Horse Racing Board has denied jock-
ey Patrick Valenzuela a license to ride races in the
state, according to a July 20 release.
Although he's still allowed by the CHRB to work
horses following a decision in August, the ruling
stated Valenzuela can re-apply for a racing license
in a year if he “present(s) evidence of rehabilitation,
including the results of alcohol and drug testing per-
formed on a regular basis.”
The CHRB ruled during a closed session July 14
based on the recommendation of hearing officer Pat-
rick Kane, who conducted a hearing April 27 regard-
ing Valenzuela’s appeal of a prior CHRB decision to
deny him a license March 18.
“(I) cannot ignore the number of chances the
CHRB previously gave (Valenzuela),” Kane wrote in his
post-hearing recommendation. “It should be noted
that since 2000, (Valenzuela) has what (I consider) 15
major rule violations and/or convictions. As such, a
six-month record free of violations fails to demon-
strate adequate rehabilitation in light of (Valenzue-
la's) numerous past transgressions.”
The 53-year-old jockey has a history of substance
abuse and failed to fulfill his commitments in two rac-
es at Santa Anita Park in January 2014. He was riding
with a conditional license that made him subject to
drug and alcohol testing at the CHRB's request.
Valenzuela declined to comment on advice from
his attorney. BH
SANFORD KICKS OFF 2-YEAR-OLD BATTLE AT SPABy Will Robbins
The $150,000 Sanford Stakes (gr. III) kicks off the
annual battle for 2-year-old superiority July 23 at
Saratoga Race Course. Young talent abounds in the
compact field of five. This capable quintet of juveniles
graduated the maiden ranks with flying colors, and
each looks to add to their promising repertoires with
a graded stakes win at the Spa.
Rick Violette's protege Random Walk dominated
his debut at Belmont Park by 5 3/4 lengths for owner
Ralph Evans. The son of Super Saver breezed four
furlongs in :47.61 July 16 at Belmont in preparation
for this start; Jose Ortiz retains the mount from the 2
hole.
Trainer Eddie Kenneally sends out Joseph Sutton's
Bitumen, a Mineshaft colt who debuted at Churchill
Downs June 3, turning in a 6 3/4 length romp.
Hall of Fame inductee Steve Asmussen and
Winchell Thoroughbreds' Zartera rounds out the pair
of Churchill shippers, while Mathis Stable's Bronson
will represent leading trainer Todd Pletcher, who
won the 2015 Sanford with Uncle Vinny—his record
sixth victory. The gray Medaglia d'Oro runner won in
impressive fashion first out at Monmouth Park June
18, rallying to a 1 3/4 length score.
This year's winner will join the likes of Secretariat,
Affirmed, City Zip, More Than Ready, and Scat Daddy
as winning graduates of the 102-year-old Sanford. BH

HOMES BEING FOUND FOR ABANDONED HORSESBy Frank Angst
Officials from the Kentucky Department of Agricul-
ture say they've found at least temporary homes
for 15 of the 43 horses declared abandoned last
month at a Mercer County farm and are working to
find homes for the 28 horses who remain.
Rusty Ford, equine programs manager for the
Kentucky State Veterinarian's Office, said the process
of identifying the horses, determining ownership,
and finding homes continues.
He said that the six most underweight horses—in-
cluding three that were determined to be emaciat-
ed—have all improved.
Officials with the Kentucky Department of Agricul-
ture on June 29 charged trainer Maria Borell and her
father, Charles "Chuck" Borell, each with 43 counts of
second-degree cruelty to animals in connection with
the abandonment of the horses at the 121-acre farm
in Central Kentucky.
Ford said a total of eight horses—an initial group
of six and then two more—have been moved to the
Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation's Blackburn
Correctional Complex.
Five horses of other breeds were taken in by
Kentucky Horse Park executive director Laura Pre-
witt. Ford said the plan is to allow those five horses
time to get acclimated while being housed with each
other, and to make sure they have no communicable
diseases, before possibly moving them to the Horse
Park.
Old Friends Thoroughbred Retirement Farms in
Georgetown, Ky., has taken in two male horses.
Ford said 28 horses remain on the Mercer County
property and are being cared for by volunteers. He
said he's confident he's found a new residence for
the two remaining horses that are not Thorough-
breds.
"For the 26 remaining Thoroughbreds, we're in
the process of trying to find places to move them to,"
Ford said.
Old Friends founder Michael Blowen said neither
of the two horses the Georgetown farm welcomed
have been identified and because of the ongoing
legal case, they both wear yellow evidence tags. He
said the horses have steadily improved since arriving
in late June.
"They've quickly become fairly sociable consid-
ering they weren't around much human contact for
some time," Blowen said.
Ford, who updated the condition of the horses
at a meeting of the Kentucky Equine Health Welfare
Council July 19 as the state considers changes to its
animal welfare laws, specifically for horses and other
large animals, said efforts continue to identify all 43
horses and determine ownership.
Ford said the horses have reacted to care.
"When we first went out there, these horses were
stand-offish—I guess that is the way you'd describe
it. They'd let you come to them but they weren't real
anxious for it," Ford said. "Today you walk up to that
fence and they come to you. They've come to rec-
ognize and appreciate the love us humans have for
them and they're showing their appreciation to us as
well." BH

JEFFORDS MAKES MARK ON CCA OAKSBy Tom Hall
On July 23 at Saratoga Race Course, the Coaching
Club American Oaks (gr. I) for 3-year-old fillies
celebrates its centennial running. Born amidst the
strife of World War I in 1917, the Oaks—a test of
stamina and class—was modeled after England's
classic Epsom Oaks by August Belmont Jr.
This is the same August Belmont who owned
Nursery Stud near Lexington and bred a certain
chestnut Fair Play colt who was foaled March 29,
1917, only a week before the U.S. officially entered
the war. As did many other able-bodied men, Bel-
mont, then 65, served his country's war efforts. As a
result of his being abroad, his wife, the noted English
actress Eleanor Robson, named the colt Man o' War
and entered him in the 1918 Saratoga yearling sale.
There, he brought $5,000 from Samuel D. Riddle. The
rest of the story wove a legend.
So what does Man o' War have to do with the
Coaching Club American Oaks for 3-year-old fillies?
Well, Sam Riddle had a nephew by marriage, Walter
M. Jeffords, a successful businessman and horseman.
When Man o' War retired to stud at the end of his
3-year-old career in 1920, Jeffords had an "in" to the
stallion's services.
The Jeffords' broodmares included The Nurse,
among the first group to visit Man o' War in 1921.
The result of that date, a brown filly foaled in 1922,
was named in honor of the celebrated Englishwoman
who served as a nurse during the Crimean War. On
June 3, 1925, Florence Nightingale won the 1 3/8-mile
CCA Oaks by five lengths.
The following year, Jeffords returned to the CCA
Oaks with another daughter of Man o' War and The
Nurse, also named for a celebrated war nurse—Ed-
ith Cavell, who rendered aid to the wounded of both
sides and was executed by the Germans for treason.
Carrying the Jeffords' familiar green and white
silks, Edith Cavell upheld the theme of her family
tradition by posting a two-length victory.
Jeffords won the CCA Oaks in 1928 with a third
daughter of Man o' War, Bateau. Jeffords bred a
fourth winner in Creole Maid, who took the 1938 run-
ning for Jeffords' wife, Sarah. By Pharamond II, Creole
Maid was a granddaughter of Man o' War. BH

WINGS OF DESIRE FIGURES IN KING GEORGEBy Blood-Horse Staff
With a respiratory infection knocking last
year's winner Postponed from the King
George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes sponsored
by Quipco (Eng-I), Wings of Desire figures among
nine remaining runners confirmed for the 1 1/2-
mile test July 23 at Ascot.
The son of Pivotal, a full brother to Eagle Top—
runner-up in this race by a nose to Postponed in
2015—went fourth in the June 4 Investec Epsom
Derby (Eng-I) with an excellent effort last out and
won York's Dante Stakes (Eng-II) in May.
Trainer Roger Varian said Postponed, who is
unbeaten in three outings this season, was found
to have an unsatisfactory tracheal wash following
his final pre-race exercise Wednesday morning.
The 5-year-old son of Dubawi could have been
only the third repeat winner of the King George VI
and Queen Elizabeth Stakes since its beginning in
1951, joining Dahlia (1973, 1974) and Swain (1997,
1998).
“While this setback is only minor, it does rule
(Postponed) out of his assignment at the weekend
and he will undertake a brief period of recovery
before he returns to full work,” Varian said on his
website, Varianstable.com. “We will let the horse
recover from this setback before making a plan of
where he runs next. We still have many big days
ahead to look forward to.” BH
FIRST STARTER TIMES THREEBy Eric Mitchell
Alger Stallion Station has a deep rooting interest in
Marquis Downs' second race July 22, where three
juveniles by the farm's freshman sire Mighty Vow are
first-time starters.
Bred by Gordon Alger, the three starters are
Dreamoncharlie, a gelding out of the winning After-
noon Deelites mare Angel Deelite; Ms. Wally Rose,
a filly out of placed runner Shannara Rose (Slew
Express); and Ulook Ubuy, a gelding out of stakes-
placed Roman Numerals (Roman Ruler).
Ulook Ubuy appears to be the fastest, having
worked four furlongs June 30 at Marquis Downs in
:47 1/5, equaling the time and distance of the July 16
work by morning-line 5-2 favorite Uniter (Unification).
Al Hanson is the owner/trainer of Ulook Ubuy, who
will be ridden by Andrew Wright.
Also trained by Hanson, Ms. Wally Rose is owned
by Michelle Hough and will be ridden by Neville Ste-
phenson.
Dreamoncharlie, owned by Die Broke Farms and
trained by Don Senebald, will be ridden by Garfield
Gordon.
Bred in Maryland by Bittersweet Farm, Mighty
Vow (Broken Vow—Danyross, by Danehill) raced in
Canada for Camilla Farms, placing in two stakes at
Woodbine and retired having earned $178,163. He

WISE DAN TO RECEIVE ROOD & RIDDLE AWARDBy Blood-Horse Staff
Two-time Horse of the Year Wise Dan has been
selected to receive the inaugural Rood & Riddle
Comeback Award from the Rood & Riddle Equine
Hospital near Lexington.
The award, given to an equine athlete who over-
came a major health complication and returned to
elite competition, will be presented during Hats Off to
Kentucky's Horse Industry Day at the Kentucky Horse
Park July 30 as part of the opening ceremonies for
the Rood & Riddle Kentucky Grand Prix. Wise Dan will
make an appearance in the Rolex Stadium prior to
the trophy presentation.
A homebred for Morton Fink trained by Charlie
LoPresti, Wise Dan compiled a 23-2-0 record from 31
starts for earnings of $7,552,920 before being retired
in 2015 while attempting a comeback at age 8.
Wise Dan was cared for by Rood & Riddle veteri-
narians, primarily Dr. Larry Bramlage, who looked af-
ter his orthopedic needs, and Dr. Scott Hopper, who
performed colic surgery on the gelding in 2014.
"Wise Dan is a remarkable athlete and we are ex-
cited for him to receive this award. For him to recover
from major surgery and come back to the level of
competition he did and in such a short time is truly
remarkable," said LoPresti. "Rood & Riddle played
a large part in Wise Dan's success, specifically Drs.
Bramlage and Hopper. We are thankful to the entire
Rood & Riddle team." BH

FOAL RULES UPSET AUSTRALIAN BREEDERSBy Tara Madgwick
On July 12, Racing Australia released its final
version of a new set of rules regarding foals and
their ownership, which takes effect August 1.
Since 1878 the Australian Stud Book has governed
such matters, but under the new rules breeders will
formally be required to accept that they must abide
by the Rules of Racing when they file a mare return.
Within 30 days of the mare return being filed to
the Australian Stud Book, a Foal Declaration Form
must also be sent to the Registrar of Racehorses at
Racing Australia.
This Foal Declaration Form needs to be signed by
those with a "beneficial interest" in the foal and must
also stipulate the foal's location. Failure to comply
may lead to the foal being barred from being regis-
tered as a racehorse at a later date.
Racing Australia has justified its unprecedented
extension of power by a need for improved regula-
tion in relation to animal welfare and integrity as well
as enhanced record keeping.
Breeders are in complete agreement over the
need to address these important issues, particularly
after the recent move to abolish greyhound racing in
New South Wales, but many believe the Australian
Stud Book could have served them just as well.
"To bring breeders under the rules of racing is
an extreme and unnecessary measure to which we
are opposed," said Antony Thompson of Widden
Stud, the oldest family-run Thoroughbred stud in the
world.
"We have no formal representation on the board
of Racing Australia, so there is no voice for our indus-
try to be heard on the issues that relate to us.
"There is no Federal Racing Minister to preside
over Racing Australia, so there is no avenue of appeal
if mistakes are made and decisions taken impact on
us in a negative way.
"We had an instance last year where a media
storm erupted over a yearling that supposedly re-
turned a positive to an anabolic steroid (as defined
by the Australian Racing Board), which was later
found to be a commonly used hormone (Regu-mate).
"That was a damaging episode that could easily
have been avoided and highlights the lack of under-
standing of the breeding industry by some racing
administrators."
The current chairman of Racing Australia and
Racing NSW is John Messara, the principal of one of
Australia's biggest breeding operations, Arrowfield
Stud.
A number of breeders are apprehensive about
bringing all breeders under the control of Racing Aus-
tralia, which creates a situation whereby one of the
largest commercial breeders in the country is chair-
ing the body regulating his peers and competitors.
They feel the resulting potential for conflict of
interest is a scenario that would not be welcomed in
any other comparable industry. BH

INDUSTRYANALYSIS
AT FINGER LAKES, STATS TELL THE TALEBy Tom LaMarra
During a time of upheaval, the July 23 pro-
gram featuring the New York Derby and
New York Oaks at Finger Lakes Gaming & Race-
track is familiar and comforting for the upstate
track.
The $150,000 New York Derby for state-bred
3-year-olds drew a field of 10, seven of which
are based at New York Racing Association
tracks. Four of the six 3-year-old fillies entered
in the $75,000 Oaks for state-breds are stabled
at NYRA tracks.
The other six races on the Saturday program
are for claimers, and are not restricted to New
York foals. However, of 48 horses entered in
those six events, 38—or 79.1%—were foaled in
New York, and in three of them, every entrant is
a New York-bred.
So, as usual, the connections of stakes-qual-
ity 3-year-olds will ship to western New York to
cherry pick the big pots—there's nothing wrong
with that; that's what the program is all about—
and the rest of the card will be dominated by
the "other" New York-bred horses that keep
Finger Lakes in business.
Saturday's ratio of state-bred runners
to total entrants is actually higher than
the overall 70% average for the more than
150 racing programs a year. If there is any
number that drives home the importance of
Finger Lakes, it's that one, and the New York
Thoroughbred Breeders organization isn't
shy to point it out.
In 2015 there were 9,344 total starts
during the lengthy meet. Based on statistics,
roughly 6,500 were made by New York foals.
Of the $17.83 million in purses paid last
year, $3.76 million was reserved for restrict-
ed races. But again, based on the percent-
age of state-bred starts, New York foals
account for well over half of "open" purses
paid last year.
It's a critical time for Finger Lakes, given the
impending opening of a full-scale casino about
25 miles away that came about when the state,
via a casino expansion map, somehow deter-
mined the "Southern Tier" region extends to
Lake Ontario. That killed the "hold harmless"
provisions of state law that would have at least
kept Finger Lakes purses, which are supple-
mented by revenue from video lottery terminals
at the track, at previous levels.
Finger Lakes owner Delaware North did re-
ceive a tax break given competition from nearby
del Lago Resort & Casino is expected to dent the
track's VLT revenue by about 30%. The new ca-
sino has said Delaware North's tax break should
help offset purse reductions, but the chances
of a company that hasn't even invested a few
million dollars in a turf course giving profits to
purses seem slim to none.
The NYTB continues to press the issue, as do
the Finger Lakes horsemen who invested in a
pretty sharp spring advertising campaign point-
ing out the importance of racing and breeding
to the upstate New York economy. It didn't get
much traction before the state legislature ad-
journed for the year, but it did get noticed.
Given the statistics, how could it not? BH
