    Club. We’re a club of

    volunteers. And we’re a

    growing club. Is it time

    for YOU to step up?

    Enough of that stuff.

    Right smack in the middle

    of Election Season, we

    need ANOTHER Party!

    So, put SATURDAY,

    October 12 on your

    calendar! We’re going

    back to The Fairfax Hunt

    Club for one more dance!

    And this time, we’re

    adding a DJ. Invite your

    friends!

    While your calendar is

    out, check again to be

    sure you have Sunday

    November 3, the NVSC

    Shag-a-Thon, at the Elk’s

    (upstairs, where we are

    on Wednesday), with the

    CBMA Award winning Rick

    Strickland Band, and

    Saturday December 7 at

    Kingstowne Community

    Center for the NVSC

    Holiday Party.

    As we close August, let’s

    take a look back at

    summer 2013: NVSC

    picnic at The Hunt Club,

    Temps/Tops at Wolf Trap,

    big beach bands in

    Winchester, Doo Wop

    show at Wolf Trap,

    including The Tymes who

    gave NVSC a big Shout-

    Out, the Capital Classic

    Reunion Weekend –

    Kicking Off 20 years of

    NVSC, a return of beach

    music and shagging to

    Tommy’s Place, and one

    heckuva Pig Roast at The

    Hunt Club a few days

    ago.

    Ah, September ... SOS

    our favorite bands — for

    FREE! Well, kind of.

    Every ACSC club sells

    help pay for them. Here’s

    hoping someone from

    having its SOS Party in

    the ‘back room’ at Fat

    Harold’s on Tuesday, Sept

    17 from 3PM until 5PM.

    And don’t forget the All-

    Virginia Party on Friday

    from 1PM until 4PM at

    Duck’s.

    On a more serious note,

    with the Fall comes the

    nominations and elections

    process to select officers

and directors to lead us in

    2014. In the coming

    weeks, you should be

    contacted by someone on

    the Nominations and

    Elections Committee to

Bob Matthews, how did you first discover NVSC?

    novice, and intermediate

    classes, which I thought

    sounded great. THANK YOU

    LIBBY! Well, after the first

    night, seeing all those people

having fun doing the shag, I

guess you could say I was

    hooked.

I know other people who say

they like to shag because it

takes them back to when they

    were younger and danced all

    the time. Actually, when I

was in college at East Carolina

    College at Greenville, NC, just

    about everybody did their own

version of the shag at the

    outdoor "Patio", which was

right on the outskirts of town,

    in Greenville, NC. Later, I

    changed schools and wound

    up in Charlotte, North Carolina

    at the University of North

    Carolina (UNC). And, even in

Charlotte, there were a lot of

kids who did the shag! I

    never took any formal lessons

in doing the shag. I just

    improvised the whole time I

was in college, going to the

    CELLAR CLUB every weekend.

    However, Libby encouraged

me to learn the actual steps

    ve r su s c on t i nu i n g t o

    improvise. And, I feel much

    better now, knowing how to

    do the actual steps, rather

making up steps on my own.

    Bottomline: Shagging is great

    mental and physical exercise.

And, if you really like the

beach music, you just have to

get this dancing out of your

system, so to speak. First, I

    think the smooth/relaxed beat

    of beach music really inspires

me to just get up and dance.

A really good song, with a nice

    smooth beat, takes me back

to the good old days, and

    makes me feel young again.

    Shaggin is the best therapy

any body could ever ask for.

And, all of the people who

    shag are always the nicest/

down to earth people you will

    ever meet!

So, there is my story. There's

    nothing more relaxing and

    enjoyable than dancing the

shag to beach music! To a lot

of people, it is just the best

    therapy nowadays, while we

continue to live in a stressed

    out world!

One day at work, while visiting

the snack bar to get a cup of

    coffee, I was talking to

    someone about how much I

    love beach music. Ms. Libby

Ash, who was a member of

    our club, (overheard me) and

asked me if I liked to shag. I

told her, yes I did, but I really

didn't know all the right steps.

    She encouraged me and my

wife Susan to come to Rene's

and check it out. She also

    mentioned the free beginner,

    Gore:

In 1958, at the age of

    16, Jackie Gore and Bobby

    Tomlinson started a band that

    later became known as The

    Embers.

There are some

    who feel that the Embers’

    clubs and Jackie Gore in

    particular may be “ground

    zero” for Carolina Beach

    Music. In 1979, Jackie wrote

    the Beach Music anthem and

    biggest Beach Music record of

    all time “I Love Beach

    Music.”

He continues to sing

    not only with his daughter

    Terri, but also with the

    Legends of Beach. A little

    about Terri Gore:
Terri has

    been awarded 8 CAMMY

    Awards. She was voted

    consecutive times.

Terri has

won “Solo Album of the Year”

    awards for her “Carolina Girl”

and “It Don’t Get Better Than

    This.”

Terri has recorded

    with such artists and groups

    as the Embers, Russell

    Thompkins, Jr. & The

Styl ist ics, Jay & the

    Techniques, The Softones,

    Jim Quick, the Catalinas, the

  • (No humor in this edition)

My brother was visiting in 1970 with his wife, young son and daughter. I took them to a museum on the Mall. Both children needed to go to the restroom, so father took son and mother took daughter, leaving me to wait for them. While standing there I

observed a mother trying to get her obviously retarded teenage daughter to step onto the escalator. Standing nearby and watching their difficulty was a security guard who was not offering any assistance whatsoever. I was furious and headed toward him to give him a tongue-lashing. Just before I reached

him, he turned to me and said: "Isn't that something, they are from the hills of Appalachia and had never seen an escalator before, I taught them how to get on it about an hour ago and now I can't get them off." I thanked him for his assistance and sheepishly walked away.

    A Story

    RECIPE (From Jim Scanlon)

    frying pan over medium heat.

Do not grease the pan. Fry

one or two cheese pieces at a

time for about 1 minute on

each side (or until they are

    lightly browned) and place

    them on a heated, shallow-

    rimmed serving plate. When

all of the pieces have been

    fried, warm the reserved

    brandy. Place the fried

cheese in the serving plate on

    the table, pour the warmed

    brandy over them and

    carefully flame the liquor.

    Add the lemon juice. Serve

with the pita bread and olives.

    Note: The cheese slices may

also be grilled to a light

    brown, but make sure you

    remove them before they

    soften too much.

    Season both sides of the

    cheese with salt and pepper.

Place the cheese in a glass

    dish with lid, cover with

    brandy and refrigerate for 2

    hours. Remove the cheese

    slices from the dish (reserving

1/4 cup of the brandy) and

    dredge them in flour

    seasoned with salt and

    pepper, coating completely.

    Use a large Teflon-coated

    Kasseri cheese

    may be found at

    Wegmans or

    Whole Foods; I

    have only found

    Kefalograviera at

    Aphrodite Greek

    Imports, 5886

    Leesburg Pike, in

    the Bailey’s

    Crossroads area.

    About Gerry Scott:

    Gerry & Ivy Scott

  • Some helpful advice on going

    to SOS:

    If you are single, consider

    asking other singles and

couples if they would like to

go to SOS with you as a

group and rent a suite. Most

    accommodations at Myrtle

    Beach are designed for

    families or groups.

    Make your hotel/motel

    reservations well in advance;

if you didn't do that, try

    anyway because sometimes

    there are cancellations. And

    ask about SOS discounts. If

    you still have difficulty

    getting a reservation,

    contact other NVSC

members to see if they have

room for you in their suite.

    It is recommended that you

    select an accommodation

    within walking distance of

    the intersection of Ocean

    Boulevard (formerly Ocean

    Drive) and Main Street so

you don’t have to drive and

    find a parking space.

    Share your cell phone

    number with others who are

    going so that you can

    communicate with them

    while there.

    Buy an SOS membership

    card from NVSC ($30.00).

    SOS members have

    unlimited access with no

    cover charge to the following

    lounges during BOTH of the

    ten day SOS events each

    year and the Mid-Winter

    Break. Please visit each of

    the SOS lounges during your

    beach trips: Ducks & Ducks

    II, Fat Harold's, The OD

    Arcade, The Pirate's Cove,

    and The Ocean Drive Beach

    & Golf Resort (includes

    Spanish Galleon, The Beach

    Club and the OD Café.

    Develop a packing list to

    ensure you will have the

    items you need while there.

    For example, many of the

    accommodations there

    include a range, refrigerator,

    plates, glassware, etc.;

    contact your hotel/motel to

    see what they provide. Take

    beach clothes (even if you

    are not a sand person),

    sunscreen and big hat (for

    outdoor day events), etc.

    There will be dance lessons

    and workshops conducted by

the experts during the day at

    the various venues. This

    information can be found by

    going to the venue websites.

    There are additional dance

    opportunities at some of the

    hotels, for example, the

    Avista hotel has a dance

    area outside at its swimming

pool with a DJ playing beach

    music.

If you haven’t planned and now

wish you did, all is not lost. Just

    contact one of the NVSC

directors and they will put you in

    touch with someone who may

    have room for you!

    Page 10 Shag Rag

    Why NVSC Membership is Important...

    Why be a member?

Most of us joined The North-

    ern Virginia Shag Club (NVSC)

so that we could improve our

    dancing in the Intermediate

    level classes. But why join

(or renew) if you aren’t inter-

    ested in taking classes? After

all, you are still welcome to

come dance with us, even if

you are not a member. There

    are important reasons to join

    beyond the obvious benefit of

    discounted admission to NVSC

    events!

    Membership enables NVSC

    to remain tax-exempt.

Many years ago, the IRS ac-

    cepted NVSC, a Virginia cor-

    poration, as a 501(c)(7) So-

    cial Club, which basically

means we don’t have to pay

    corporate income taxes on

any Net Income we may have

    from year to year. But

    there’s a catch – no more

than 15% of our revenue can

    come from non-members.

    So, if too many non-members

    attend our events, then we

    could lose our tax-exempt

    status, and that would mean

    higher costs for everyone.

The club allows us to host

    events. Some people have

    questioned why we even need

a club – after all, we could

    just meet at Tommy’s and

take up a collection for the

    DJ. But would Charlie and

    Jackie come to teach? Could

we have a Classic, or any of

    the other dances? Having a

    club gives us the infrastruc-

ture to enter into contracts, to

    reserve facilities months in

    advance, to obtain liquor li-

censes, to hire bands and to

pay for all of the other ele-

ments of a great party. Your

    membership dues support

    that infrastructure and make

it all possible. Behind all of

    the great social events that

we have is the legal structure

    that involves lots of people.

    You become part of some-

    thing special. Remember

    the TV show “Cheers” –

    where everybody knows your

    name? NVSC is like that.

Where can you find a friendli-

    er, more fun-loving bunch of

    people? Doesn’t it make you

    proud to belong?

    NVSC is one of

    roughly 100

    similar clubs that form The

    Association of

    Carolina Shag

    Clubs. In other

    words, we are part

    of something

    bigger than ‘just’ a

little social club. We are part of an

    organization

    whose purpose is

    to promote the

    dance that we all

    love and to

    preserve the

heritage of shag dancing and of

    beach music.

  • The Northern Virginia Shag Club is a corporation, and is governed by a Board of Directors. The

Board consists of nine Directors: the President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and five

Directors at large. The Board of Directors is elected annually and each Director serves a term of

one year, from January 1 through December 31. Directors must have been members of the

Club in good standing for at least one year before taking office, and during their terms of office

must remain members in good standing. The President and Vice President must have served at

least one year on the Board before running for President and Vice President. The prior year of

service could have occurred at any time. Directors may serve multiple terms, which may be

successive. The general duties of each Director include the following:

To attend all regular and special meetings of the Board. Regular Board meetings are held

monthly. A Director who misses four or more regular meetings without a good reason can

    be removed.

To serve as the Chairperson of a Standing Committee or as the Board's liaison to a Standing

Committee. The Standing Committees are the Nominations and Elections Committee, Audit

Committee, Dance Committee, Music Committee, Social and Hospitality Committee, Charity

and Fund Raising Committee, Membership Committee and Public Relations Committee.

Liaisons are appointed where the Chairperson of a Standing Committee is not a member of

the Board. Liaisons communicate Board policies and decisions to the Standing Committees

and report to the Board on the work of the Standing Committees.

To support Club projects and attend a reasonable number of Club functions, to personally

help conduct Club projects and functions, and to recruit volunteers to help conduct projects

    and functions.

To provide viewpoints during the policy discussions of the Board.

To preserve and give to their successors all records and documents received in the course of

the Club's business. The officers of the Club have special duties, which include the

    following:

President. The President is the principal executive officer of the Club and presides at all

meetings of the Board and meetings of the members at which he or she is present. The

President must attend all five (5) required annual meetings of Association of Carolina Shag

Clubs (ACSC) or ensure that the Club is represented at required ACSC meetings. The

President names the Chairpersons of Standing Committees and the Newsletter Editor and

Capital Shag Classic Coordinator. The President also exercises general supervision over the

    affairs of the Club.

Vice President. The Vice President assists the President and performs the duties of the

President in the event of the President's unavailability.

Secretary. The Secretary keeps the minutes for the meetings of the Board and members,

sees to it that all required notices are duly given, and keeps a current roster of the

    membership of the Club.

Treasurer. The Treasurer is responsible for all funds of the Club, makes a report on the

financial status of the Club at every regular meeting of the Board, makes available to the

Board, all books and financial records of the Club for audits and verifications, and files all

documents and returns required by federal and state tax codes.

All of the information in this article comes from the NVSC Bylaws, which are available on the

Club's website, http://www.nvshag.org/bylaws.htm. A copy of the Bylaws can also be requested
