And if it is just a matter of getting off our Lazy Boys and making the effort, remem- ber what Tom Hampton said recently: “When you're not coming out to shag, what happens is that you just sit there and get old!” In the past I have been fond of saying, “If you aren't shagging, what the hell are you doing with your life?” In any event, I do wonder what people who don't shag do that is half the fun of shagging!!!. THE PREZ SEZ By John Harper

Fellow Shaggers, congratulations on your tenth year of exis-tence!! It is a great honor to be your president again after nine years. Considering our presidential leadership and the hard work of officers, directors and committee chairpersons over the years, the new club leadership has some hard acts to fol-low! The leadership team this year will do its best. I want to repeat the goals I set out on election night. One: Have a heckuva good time partying! Two: Boost our mem-bership substantially. Three: Boost our attendance and sup-port of Charlie Mac's. Four: Strengthen our connection to the shag world at large and especially to the shag clubs on the “western frontier”. These goals are easily achieved if every-one in the club goes to work. I am confident you will do that and that we will emerge at year's end a much stronger club. Our resolve in doing our best for the club will be strengthened if we take a moment to reflect on what this club has meant to us. More than anything, it has allowed us to recapture our youth. I have never met an old shagger. I have met a few that looked a little old, but in their hearts they were still kids. In fact in most of their hearts there are fun loving, and sometimes naughty, little devils just trying to get out!! Secondly, shag-ging has brought us many new friends that we would have never known had it not been for the club. How enriched we are for that. Lastly, the club has been a support group for fellow members and friends. We have visited a lot of funeral homes and hospitals and raised lots of money for friends in need during the last ten years.

We do have some challenges ahead of us this year. We will easily meet them if we take “The Pledge”, a pledge to our-selves and our friends in the club to make shagging a priority in our lives for one year. And if it is just a matter of getting off our Lazy Boys and making the effort, remem-ber what Tom Hampton said recently: “When you're not coming out to shag, what happens is that you just sit there and get old!” In the past I have been fond of saying, “If you aren't shagging, what the hell are you doing with your life?” In any event, I do wonder what people who don't shag do that is half the fun of shagging!!!. Politics Of Clubs And Organizations By J. Mike Honeycutt (Twisters Shag Club)

We've all been involved in some endeavor to advance, preserve or promote an idea, belief or even a religion. We join a group with vim & vigor ready to really get involved. Maybe the organization is just getting started, or maybe it's been around a long time. For new members coming onto the organization there's a "Honeymoon Period" kinda like real politics. Everyone involved is getting to know each other, and 99% still have the best interest of the organization "as they see it" at heart. As time goes by the organization has to conduct some kind of business, maybe elect some officers, appoint committees, ask for vol-unteers and or have some events. The organization now needs ideas from its members. It is about this time division lines start form-ing. This is not all bad. After all, the organization needs different points of view. The strength and success of this endeavor will come from the blending of good ideas. That's a key phrase because my "good ideas" are all good and yours are completely stupid and ri-diculous. As different opinions form, each point of view rallies to gain support so it can "steam roll" the other. The debates all usually have one thing in common. Whatever the debate is over is really insignificant when compared to the true purpose of the effort or the or-ganization as a whole. For example, a certain Church was redecorating the Sanctuary. When it came time to pick the carpet color, division lines were drawn. One side wanted red carpet while the other side wanted beige. So after much discussion and debate, a vote was held. The red won and what a victory. The side that voted for red felt that "we really showed them!" Soon after the Church split and some old friendships were never the same. Both sides still wanted the same thing. They still believed in the same doctrine. But, some of these folks just couldn't get over the fact that things didn't go their way. So, here's my point; No group is perfect, nor do they all think alike. Thank goodness! If they did, it would be a disaster. The best or-ganizations thrive because of many different ideas and points of view. We need an ego. We'd be worthless without it. But, we also have to ask ourselves if our ego is a problem when it comes to working on a project with others. Sometimes it's hard to see the other person's point of view even if they have the best idea. It's so easy to get caught up in some minor detail and lose sight of the goal. Sometimes "It's not rocket science." "It's not about solv-ing world hunger." "It's not balancing the federal budget." It's about "dancin', drinkin' and havin' a good time with your buddies".

Charleston, a great place for a party Judy Bryant

Charleston is certainly one of the most picturesque old towns in America with the 200-year-old, enormous live oaks with Spanish moss-covered branches hanging over the streets. They really give the calming, relaxed sensation of the grandeur of the old South. We became more intimate with this beautiful neighborhood as we bicycled through the residential streets around Susan Heape’s home, delighting in the wonderful views of the well-manicured yards abounding in camellias, azaleas and other flowers. This was after lunching at a marina and sharing “she crab” soup, grilled lemon spicy shrimp and crab cakes… following a bar delicacy to numb and remove the memory of all of our wrong turns and four or five calls to Susan to figure out where we were and where we should be! …we could be a directionally dysfunctional couple. Speaking of food, Susan fixed us my first shrimp omelet one morning and it was outstanding. Another great gourmet memory was Susan’s out-of-this-world grilled geechee/greek (my own description) mahi-mahi that was just that….out of this world. We antiqued one afternoon. On another we leisurely bicycled through Battery Park and the adjoining historic district. The area has many alleys, a few cobblestone streets and fabulously gardened yards and restored homes. We also stopping for a specialty coffee at the top of the Venue. And, every night we danced. Thursday evening, Susan took us to Pivots, which is where the Charleston Shag Club meets. We weren’t there on their regular night, but still had a good DJ and locals as well as other pre-party shaggers to en-joy and exchange dances. Friday night, we registered for the Winter Workshop party and started the evening dancing at the ballroom in the Holiday Inn. Later we walked the block and a half to the Islander’s Shag Club. They (and Pivots) have wonderful dance conditions with raised wooden floors and lots of space. The Islander’s has a deck on the back (which was enclosed for this party), kitchen and two huge grills in the yard where they did a great job of fixing Greek chicken for Saturday night’s meal. An interesting idea, they had three dining times, which were designated during registration and we probably didn’t have more than a five minute wait in line at the buffet. Murl Augustine put on quite a high-energy dancing-on-the-DJ-bar show while he was playing at the Islander’s club. He’s a great DJ, however, we enjoyed all the DJ’s, as well as the good dancers, old friends and dancing companions.

Smart Ways To Spend My Rebate Check By J. Mike Honeycutt (Twisters Shag Club)

As most of you know George W. Bush signed a tax cut package into law. I've heard all kinds of good sound advice on in-vesting your refund in stocks, etc. I've even heard some folks talking as if they didn't really want a refund or expressing fear that the Fed would go broke if they send out refunds to everyone. I don't know the exact amount that each of us got. It varies depending upon income and marital status. But, let's pick a number for consideration, say $450.00. Now the pessimist would say "big deal, that's no help" Ah, but the optimistic shagger is elated at the possibilities… With $450 a shagger could buy:

·300 Gallons Of Gas ·200 Beers ·120 Mixed Beverages ·37 Hair Cuts ·31 Pitchers Of White Russians ·12 SOS Memberships ·10 Rounds Of Golf ·7 Gallons Of Top Shelf Brands 2 Pairs Of Cole-Hahn Shoes A "Lot Of" Split the Kitty Tickets

Or, you could be a hero and say, “here honey take this money to the mall and don’t come home till you spend it.”.

Meeting Highlights from ACSC Winter Workshop – Charleston, SC 2/23/02

Murl Augustine, President, presided and was as entertaining as he is as a DJ…well, almost. The treasury balance is $8,252.75. Two minute nominating speeches were made from about 10 club members for three at-large positions on the ACSC Board. Then each candidate was allotted two minutes and voted upon. A contribution was made to the North Myrtle Beach Fire Department with money donated for, but after the 9/11 money had been sent to the New York Fire Fund. Parade News: All clubs are encouraged to participate with floats. This year there will be a color guard with an American flag and each state represented with their respective flags. A representative for Alabama is needed. A reminder was made that no cans or bottles are permitted in the parking lots or streets, etc., during S.O.S. and there is a $250 fine that is enforced. The Embers Shag Club will be the Grand Marshall of the Parade. Shag icons announced: Chuck Ward, passed away 6/01 and Mary Robinette. The Steel City Boogie Club in Pittsburgh was voted into the Association: 301 members. Requests were made for “intent to host” the 2004 workshops. Summer Workshop will be District 5, which is our district. Savan-nah, OD Shag Club and Augusta asked to be considered and will make presentations during Summer Workshop. District 2 clubs, Lake Tillery, Moore Area and Danville clubs will make presentations for Winter Workshop. Ninety-two clubs were represented at the Association meeting with 196 representatives and a total club association membership of 15,736 shaggers. During the ending questions and comments, a representative from Duck’s and Fat Harold’s made about 10-minutes worth of very strong comments concerning gifts to the charities they support. Their clubs promote the Dewey Kennedy and the Hall of Fame charities. They had requested contributions from the clubs, however, had received very little response. He also named the clubs that had asked about or sent donations…about three clubs, saying that the rest have ignored their pleas. He stated that unless a club has made a donation to “their” charities, the clubs shouldn’t expect the donation of time, alcohol, etc. to their parties for free pours from Duck’s and Fat Harold’s. Then, lunch was served, very efficiently and quick with sandwich, chips and cookie sitting at each seat in the restaurant of the Holiday Inn….this was much preferred to a more gourmet buffet I once attended at an Associa-tion meeting that took an hour to wait in line!

Benefit for Children’s Hospital

By Joanie Henley In an effort to promote membership among the younger crowd, several couples from BSOB did a dance exhibition at Bartow Arena on Saturday,

March 9th. The demonstration was for UAB students participating in a Dance Marathon Benefit for Children’s Hospital of UAB. John and Sally Harper, Mike and Susan Bradley, Buck and Joanie Henley and Gary and Wanda Pratt demonstrated the Shag for all of the students present for this event. After showing “our stuff”, John Harper proceeded to teach the basic step, male and female turn and the beginning steps. They then broke off into groups for individual attention. I can honestly say I have never met such a great group of kids that were so receptive and excited to learn this “new” dance. The students enjoyed themselves and didn’t want us to leave. Several even asked us when we could come back. It was amazing how the youth of today can learn these dance steps that take us several months to learn. We were so impressed! Upon leaving the Arena, several of the students said that they would like to get up a group and come to Charlie Mac’s to learn more and to enjoy dancing the “shag”. We hope that they will come and join us so we can enjoy their youthful energy and they can enjoy our dancing.

Thank You Dear Beach Shaggers, Thanks so much for the flowers. They really up-lifted my spirits! - I’m doing great – Miss you Guys

Jeanie Hammonds.

MAHVALOUS MID-WINTER by John Harper In January the Beach Shaggers of Birmingham sent its largest contingent of Mid-Winter party-goers to Ocean Drive in a long time, if not ever. They were not to be disappointed. It was a helluva a party. And, for once, the weather was pretty good. Sally and I arrived on Thursday evening and were on the Ducks dance floor by 8 o'clock. How good it was to see our many shagging friends again and to enjoy some great dancing. Our roomie, Susan Green, arrived about 1:00 a.m., following her jet-propelled ride up I-20 with Rocket Man a/k/a Jim Fallon. It must have been quite a ride. When she got to the room, she crashed and did not come out to dance. The next day, the first order of business for Susan and moi (Sally was nursing a heachache) was to visit the Boulevard Grill for a positively orgasmic Frisco Burger (burger, bacon, Swiss cheese, and mushrooms on buttered and grilled sour dough bread). We then headed up to Judy's House of Oldies to scope out the latest shag CD's (of which there weren't that many). Then we high-tailed it back to the room to get ready for an afternoon of dancing. The dancing started earlier than at S.O.S. – thank goodness! Since Susan had not been to the beach in a while, she enjoyed renewing acquaintances with old friends. The gal contingent from Beeham --Charlotte, Lynn, Jackie, Sue, Barbara and Karen– spent a lot of time at Ducks. As we all did , they witnessed some fine shagging by the folks who do it best. Perhaps the highlight of the trip was watching Annette and Dwight from Raleigh dance. If you haven't seen them, you have missed a real treat. Folks, these people know how to shag the old-fashioned way. No mirrors! Just a get-down-and-boogie, make-it-up-as-you-go, smooth-and-sexy kind of style that, for my money, anyway, is the way the dance should be done. In any event, it is fun and inspirational to watch. Dwight danced with several of our gals. I danced with Annette. I just tried to hold on for dear life! HA! Annette also danced with a young -- make that very young – guy from Florida, named – get this – Romeo. They put on quite a show. In spite of the guy's immense talent, I think he learned a thing or two from Annette. Saturday was a repeat of Friday. Ed and Elise Evans entertained folks from all over with a soup party at their beach place. I went to the Association of Carolina Shag Clubs meeting. Later, Sally, Susan and I went to Murrell's Inlet, a picturesque little town south of Myrtle Beach proper, known for it many seafood restaurants. Of course, in the middle of January most of them were closed for lunch. Nevertheless, we found an open one and had a great lunch of salads, shrimp, scallops, and rock 'n roll oldies on the sound system. We then headed back to O.D. for another afternoon and evening of dancing, with a dinner break at the Duffy Street Seafood Shack, located in the old Hardwick's Cafeteria building. This is a great place, where they play R & B on the sound system and let you through the peanut hulls on the floor. I understand that late in the evening on Saturday, the music in Ducks suffered a definite downturn. Coming to the res-cue was Mr. Beach himself, a/k/a Leon, who took the all Birmingham gals down to the Pirate's Cove to finish off a late evening of dancing.
