I’m thankful for many things in my life. My wife and family bring me great joy and I am thankful for them every day. I am also thankful for the Carolina Shag Club. When Brenda and I started taking lessons from Jeff and Dede in 2008, we had no idea how radically our lives would change. So thank you, Jeff and Dede, for encouraging and cajoling us to come out and take that first step on a dance floor in front of strangers. Many of you can empathize because it also happened to you. I want to thank each of our members for the compliments, support, ideas and complaints that I received this year. Well, maybe not all the complaints. It has been a fun and challenging year to say the least. I know that you will give Dede Ward the same support and commitment in 2017 that I received over the course of 2016. See you on the dance floor, Dan

Hi Everyone,

Since this is my last note for the year, I thought we might take a little time to review. Let’s see; three of us were robbed at gunpoint, we suffered through the 2016 election and we lost our CSC home. I bet you people will be glad to see the last of me.

Look at it this way. No one was shot, we enjoyed the 2016 election and we look forward to a new location for our club with new opportunities for growth and change. We also had some great parties, raised a lot of money for charity, made some new friends and even kept some of the ones we had. So, cut me some slack.

The end of the year does make us want to pause and reflect doesn’t it? Many of our members are retired. Some, like me, retired just this year. I have found that it leaves a lot of time for introspection. That’s a double-edged sword. It can make us thankful or fearful and we get to choose which it will be. I choose thankful.

See you on the dance floor,

Dan

Carolina Shag Club Members Win Two November Contests…

Carolina Shag Club members Danny Scott of Simpsonville, S.C. and Susan Welch of Greenwood, S.C. earned their first Amateur Division win at the Competitive Shaggers Association dance contest held on November 4th at Hamlet, N.C. Two weeks later they captured their second division win at the Carolina Shag Classic at Duck’s Beach Club on November 18th and 19th. The Duck’s win elevates them into the Novice Division.

Competitive shag dancing is a demanding endeavor. Danny and Susan traveled over 500 miles in November to compete in these two contests. The CSA has held eight contests in 2016 at various clubs across the southeast including one at The Phoenix Inn (now closed) back in April 2016.

Greenville's Phoenix Inn closes its doors Structural problems may doom The Phoenix; CSC board debates on new dance venue

The Phoenix Inn, located at 246 N. Pleasantburg Drive has closed for an unspecified period of time because of numerous structural issues that need to be evaluated and assessed. Roof problems, outdated room décor, plumbing and drainage problems top the list of issues, according to Marian Woods, the hotel's corporate director of operations. The building is 45 years old and its age is cited as a major problem. The Phoenix’s lounge had been the home dance floor for Carolina Shag Club since 2009.

At the time of closing, owners ordered a feasibility study that won't begin until after the first of the year. Global Market Connections of Naples, Fla. bought the property 16 months ago for a group of investors, including one big investor from Greenville who did not want his name revealed. They originally wanted to renovate while remaining open, but the extent of the work made that impossible.

Staff and loyal customers gathered on Wednesday, November 9th for an emotional farewell party.

"For many business and pleasure travelers who have stayed at the inn, it took just one visit to become a loyal, returning guest -- some returning year after year for over 25 years," said a manager. "Even more impressive are the loyal, long-term employees -- one with 39 years of service, another with 33 years -- who've stayed through numerous ownership and management changes."

The hotel is reportedly helping the 25 or so employees with resume writing, references and other assistance to find new jobs.

The Phoenix first opened in 1971 as The Thunderbird Motor Lodge. Its primary building caught fire and burned four years later.

As the myth goes, a bird that was consumed by fire rises from the ashes, and a phoenix is born. Thus, the hotel was renamed The Phoenix: Greenville's Inn.

The business has changed hands several times since its original owners opened the doors.

When asked about what comes next for the inn, owners said that will depend on the results of the feasibility study. It’s unknown if they are looking at a remodeling job that will take a few months, a year, or even longer. When a decision is made, probably by mid-2017, the owners will announce it to the community.

Comic Corner – Christmas

There was once a great czar in Russia named

Rudolph the Red. He stood looking out the windows of his palace

one day while his wife, the Czarina, sat nearby knitting. He turned to her and said, "Look my dear, it has begun to rain!"

Without even looking up from her knitting she replied, "It's too cold to rain. It must be sleeting."

The Czar shook his head and said, "I am Czar of all Russia, and Rudolph the Red knows rain, dear!"

Q: What do you call Santa's helpers? A: Subordinate clauses

Q: What did Adam say on the day before

Christmas? A: "It's Christmas, Eve!"
