Thanksgiving is so much more than being thankful for a generous buffet of delicious food and fellowship with family and others. We are

all grateful for a day off (for those who are) without phones, emails and walk-ins. Some of us will use Thanksgiving to catch up on reading, TV watching, social media or even a bit of office work. There are also a few stores with pre-Black Friday sales that will gladly accept your money. However you choose to spend the day, save some time for reflection on the things that really matter and express gratitude. I’d like to thank all of you for your membership with GMDM this year. Your support of our community service projects, scholarship awards, networking socials and special events, including Bosses’ Night, the charity golf tournament and CEU training is greatly appreciated. Membership fees basically cover the cost of the monthly lunch meeting. Other operational costs are offset through newsletter and website advertising, sponsorships and donations. Your continued financial support is integral to maintaining consistency in programming, service offerings, support of the community and honoring our commitment to award scholarships to deserving medical and dental students each year. I am especially grateful for your time. I won’t list names, but there are many of you who regularly attend meetings and actively participate on GMDM committees, maintaining the website and social media platforms, coordinating special events, arranging guest speakers, welcoming and registering members and guests, and so much more. All of us are very busy; we wouldn’t be employed if we weren’t! I recognize that your time is precious, and I appreciate every minute that you spend propelling the mission of our organization. A new year is on the horizon, presenting a new opportunity for GMDM members to take a leadership role. Jennifer Arrington, Past President, is accepting nominations for office’s and some committee chair positions. Contact her by email ([email protected]) no later than November 14, 2017 to nominate yourself or an appropriate member. We will vote at the December meeting, which is December 6, 2017. I repeat, the December meeting will be held on the first Wednesday of the month instead of the normal date to avoid the holiday rush, so mark your calendars! The structure of the December meeting is slightly different than regular meetings. We will handle GMDM business, but also spread a little cheer and appreciation in the process. “Cultivate the habit of being grateful for every good thing that comes to you, and to give thanks continuously. And because all things have contributed to your advancement, you should include all things in your gratitude.”

A: Everyone will experience a data breach. It is just a matter of when. How you react will be the key.

Make sure you have a plan in place for how you are going to respond. This involves looking beyond your HIPAA policies. Your plan may include having a public relations person in place to handle issues. You should also make sure you have a data breach plan: • Act quickly to show affected individuals that you are trying to protect them. • Make sure you take action to show you are genuinely attempting to remedy the problem. (Patients want to know you are doing everything you can to protect them and prevent a breach from occurring again.

If you do not have cybersecurity insurance, you should look into purchasing a policy. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Preventative training is key as human error is the cause of most breaches. Follow your HIPAA security breach policies, and remember to perform a risk assessment.

Seasoned travelers are selective about what items make it to their suitcases. Effective communicators are as selective about what words make it to their vocabulary. Here are 3 dead-weight words to leave behind:1. BUT: (The eraser) obliterates anything positive that comes before it. Case in point:

“You’re a really nice person but we should break up.” Either say what comes before the b-word, or what comes after it. You can’t have it both ways.

2. JUST: (The reducer) minimizes whatever follows it. We all know, “I just need a moment of your time” or “Oh, I just threw dinner together…no trouble at all” shouldn’t be taken literally. Instead of downplaying your needs or accomplishments, state them plainly.

3. TRY: (The delayer)creates a diversion from the inevitable (sometimes awkward) truth. Let’s be real… “I’ll try to give you a call” is code for, “Don’t expect to hear from me.” Next time you say, “I’ll try…” compare it to your inner monologue. The disparity may be eye-opening.

Words matter. Unpack the dead-weight that erases, reduces and delays.
