MISSIONS T A T E M E N T

GMDM is the premier profess iona l organization for medical and dental practices in Guilford County, dedicated to providing t imely educational programs, strong networking support and personal growth opportunities. Join. Connect. Grow.

Summer ... the season of sunscreen, mosquito bites and grilled hot dogs. It is a rather interesting time of year. Office talk is filled with vacation plans, camp antics, daily thunderstorms, folks too cold, folks too hot and, of course, the occasional dress code violation. I am starting to realize that there are as many people who love and welcome summer as those who detest the mention of the weatherman’s sunny, 90-degree weekend forecast. Like it or not, summer is here until September. As much as I love summer, it sometimes causes a challenge or two in the office. For many offices, summertime is busier with decreased staffing due to vacations, cancelled appointments and emergencies, both real and imagined. We find ourselves hustling and bustling during a time that is “supposed” to be a little more laid back. As a result, some employees begin to feel overwhelmed and frustrated. I recently read an article on Salary.com that offered a few tips for keeping your team engaged and appreciated. • Lottery lunch – Host a weekly drawing for lunch gift certificates. Winners get an extra 30 minutes or more to redeem the lunch and enjoy it off-premises.• Ice cream cart – Deliver or make available a choice of ice cream sandwiches, Italian ice, frozen yogurt and drumsticks. Bonus points if you stream ice cream truck music from your mobile device.• Field day – Frisbees, hula hoops and cornhole can provide an excellent opportunity for team building.• Treats – Doughnuts, bagels, fresh fruit, smoothies, snacks, special coffees, bottled water – employees love food and drink treats. Do what your budget allows or coordinate a potluck for everyone to share.• Summer picture contest – Invite employees to post their best summer photos in the breakroom. Vote on the picture that appears to be the most fun. Summer can be a challenge for GMDM meeting attendance as well. If you know that you are unable to attend a meeting, send a supervisor or an emerging leader in your organization who can benefit from the presentation. GMDM continues to provide maximum membership value all summer long. Education, networking, community service projects, resume resources, connections with like-minded professionals and so much more are available throughout the year.

Summertime, Office Style

Life is better when everyone feels connected, engaged, and appreciated.

Ask The LawyerHave a question about the law?

Send your questions to [email protected]

A: When an employee is fired or unexpectedly quits, many managers and owners let their emotions get the best of them. They take their frustrations out on the employee who was fired/quit by deducting as much as they can from his/her final paycheck. Handling a situation in this manner can be very risky. The following information should be kept in mind in such cases to prevent any unnecessary damage to either party.

First, former employees are alumni of your organization and could potentially do damage to your brand by telling others how they were treated while working for you. In the long run, it is better to let the little things go to help mitigate any hard feelings.

Second, make sure you are on solid footing when making the deductions: Check your state laws before holding their final check; have a signed document on file allowing the deductions. Check your state laws to see who benefits from the deductions; do not deduct to the point where the employee’s final pay is below minimum wage for actual time worked. Check state laws for deducting vacation or PTO. And, finally, be reasonable.

Why do most people talk in terms of what they sell?

Customers hear in terms of what they buy.

What you sell and what people buy are not the same thing. Not even close.

This applies to products, services and ideas: • A retailer sells outdoor equipment and apparel. • Their customer buys freedom and adventure. • A consultant sells LinkedIn profile design. • His client buys a compelling professional brand for networking and career growth. • An executive sells an idea to serve customers more efficiently. • Her team buys a balanced and productive workload.

Selling is about you.

Buying is about them.

Want people to be intrigued with your products, services and ideas?

Speak their language.

Sell what they buy.
