The annual Guilford County Teacher Supply Warehouse drive is a project of the GMDM Community Service Committee, chaired by Judy West. New and used school supplies, including pencils, paper, notebooks, backpacks, crayons and more are needed. Perhaps you can post the flyer in this newsletter in your office break room so that your staff can participate, too. Teachers spend $500-$800 or more per year of their own money to supply their classrooms with necessary supplies. The Teacher Supply Warehouse allows teachers to shop for the items they need for their students at no cost to the teachers. PLEASE … BE GENEROUS! See newsletter insert for details.

There is so much more to GMDM than a lunch at the country club! GMDM is a dynamic professional organization that not only provides career development education and training, but community service and networking opportunities for members. Special thanks to officers, committee chairs and members who have shared their time, talent and support. As a result, we have coordinated events including two CEU workshops and a charity golf tournament, hosted dynamic lunch meeting presenters, launched a new website, welcomed new members and so much more. If you have not had active participation on a committee this year, we need your help with upcoming service projects and events. The following committees are currently planning events and special projects: Community Service, Bosses’ Night and Social Media. Some committees meet via conference call and others meet before or after GMDM meetings or at convenient times. Serving on committees is an excellent way to give back to GMDM and the community, network, build friendships, do what you enjoy and learn new skills. MARY ANN ALLEN, Au.D., CCC-A, has joined Hearing Life as an audiologist after working for nearly 16 years for Morehead Memorial Hospital’s audiology department and Morehead ENT Associates in Eden. Dr. Allen sees patients in Hearing Life’s Greensboro and Madison offices. “Working at Hearing Life has allowed me to acquire a new group of wonderful patients,” she says. “At the same time, I have been able to help my previous patients who were left without service in the Rockingham County area when Morehead ENT Associates closed last year.” Dr. Allen earned her undergraduate degree from California University of Pennsylvania, a master’s degree in audiology from Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania, and a Doctor of Audiology degree from A.T. Still University/Arizona School of Health Sciences. “I get great joy from helping individuals with hearing issues get back to living and participating in their normal social situations,” she says. In her free time, Dr. Allen enjoys spending time with her children, Joshua and Sarah. Hearing Life is located at 100 East Northwood Street in Greensboro. SARA COX, (formerly Austin) was a 2008 recipient of a GMDM radiology scholarship and is now working in one of our member practices, Guilford Medical Associates. Robin Upton represents the practice in GMDM. Here is Sara’s success story:
“I am a registered technologist in radiography and bone densitometry. I perform the DEXA scans and X-rays for Guilford Medical Associates.
A number of years ago, I decide to pursue an education in healthcare, specifically in medical imaging. I was accepted into the hospital-based Radiography program at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital.
I worked very hard, both academically and clinically, during the two-year program and was awarded a scholarship through
Guilford Medical & Dental Managers. This scholarship helped me immensely by reimbursing me for all of my out-of-pocket expenses associated with my education.
After graduation, I continued my relationship with Moses Cone as a radiography technologist, gaining valuable expertise in both trauma imaging and fluoroscopy.
A year ago, I began a new professional journey with Guilford Medical Associates, performing bone densitometries, which led me to become registered as a Bone Densitometrist.
I am so thankful for the opportunities that Guilford Medical Associates and Guilford Medical & Dental Managers have given me. I feel like I have found my way home.
I really do work for one of the best practices in the Piedmont ... dare I say the entire state.”

A: It’s a common misconception that estate planning is only for the old or wealthy. Estate planning is a shorthand term for planning for adult life. As soon as people become an adult at age 18, they will benefit from estate planning.
Every young adult should have a comprehensive Health Care Power of Attorney and Health Care Directive, both of which will designate another to act as:
• a personal representative to make healthcare decisions.• articulate wishes and directions in the event of deteriorating health.• allow HIPAA to release medical records.
Many young adults should also have a General Durable Power of Attorney. This document will designate another to act for the young adult in legal and financial matters. The General Durable Power of Attorney is essential only when a young adult owns property in his or her individual name.
These two estate planning tools will not only help protect a young adult but also serve as an introduction to financial literacy.

We’ve all heard it:
• “I wish my team would do a better job listening to our customers.” • “People just aren’t loyal to a company anymore.” • “Millennials are so distracted.”
It is a reasonable expectation to have a team that listens, made up of people who are loyal, and present.
However, reasonable doesn’t always translate to realistic.
To make that leap, every leader must wrestle with a single question:
How do I demonstrate what I desire?
Wouldn’t it be strange if I complained about not having any tomatoes if I never planted any?
It’s a reasonable expectation for tomatoes to grow in a garden.
It’s only a realistic expectation once the seeds are planted.
So it is in business.
No leader is above the law of sowing and reaping:
• If it’s listening you seek: Be an effective listener. • If it’s loyalty you want: Demonstrate what loyalty looks like. • If it’s presence you crave: Live and lead in the moment.
It’s only realistic to expect your team to give what they get.
Sometimes we do not take the time to say “thank you” to members who go above and beyond when they take on a task. A HUGE THANK YOU TO BRUCE BARTON who engineers the golf tournament every year, never faltering or complaining about the enormous tasks a project like this entails. ONE THING WE DO NOT KNOW ABOUT YOU: I enjoy singing and have sung the national anthem multiple times at Grasshoppers’ baseball games at First National Bank Stadium.
