Written Statement: We chose to advocate for year-round education, because if an effective, properly planned year-round program is put into place, there are more advantages than disadvantages for students and their families. Year-round education relates to childhood education, because the early years of schooling are critical foundational years for young learners’ development, and year-round education programs provide students with many opportunities to maintain high levels of academic achievement, when actively involved in school throughout the year.

Our Message

Getting the message across:

Do you ever wonder what it would be like for your child to go to school year-round?

Did you know the original U.S. school schedule originated based on the agricultural calendar, when the majority of children worked on farms?

Today’s educational society has vastly changed since then. According to the National Association for Year-round education: “(There) is the pretense that because yesterday’s calendar was good enough for us, it should be good enough for our children – despite major changes in the larger society.”

Here is an example of a year-round education program to give you some foundational knowledge on what the schedule of an average year-round educational program consists of:

Page 5: School Year Round Kimberly W.Lauren P. Kimberly B.Misty D

• Doesn’t benefit academically

• Scheduling child care problems

• Extracurricular activities suffer from scheduling practices and competitions.

• Students may miss out on remedial classes for the summer

• Teachers cant continue their own education

• Difficulty scheduling staff development days

• Increase cost of operation

• Difficulties communicating with parents

Example Stories• Lassen had negative feelings toward year round schooling because of the

title. She tried it and loved that type of schooling. Her children go to school for nine weeks and is out for three weeks. She thinks that the name needs to change and not the type of education year round schooling provides. She was convinced the students would never be out and would go more than traditional schools. When the teachers and other people in the community told her about the school she thought she would give it a try and never thought her students would love it.

• Brigid Schulte said that her kids love year round education. The students get to experience hands on activities that will teach them their lessons. Her daughter had chemistry and they called it “Harry Potter” class because that was how the students could understand it. Her son had to make a movie and he learned about plots and characters because he had to include them. When they are on break they can enjoy the break and reflect on what they learned.
