January 2016

Dear Philippians, With the consent of the vestry and clergy leadership, Pete Rauchenstein of Rauchenstein Consulting Group, will be with us beginning January 11, 2016, to conduct a Feasibility Study, which will determine whether or not we will continue with an official campaign beginning in February. You may remember that we’ve talked about the likelihood of a capital campaign beginning in 2016, and we believe this is the time to do it. Pete will be in Jackson for three weeks, helping to organize and attending “cottage meetings” to which all parishioners will be invited. At these meetings, the potential items for a campaign will be introduced and described, and everyone will have an opportunity to ask questions and provide feedback. It’s the best possible way to insure that everyone has a part in the formulation of our capital needs. Obviously, a new organ is the most crucial element of the campaign, but we are looking at other needs as well. If the Study indicates that St. Philip’s believes that we are called to continue, Pete will be with us for approximately three months to conduct the campaign We will begin to mail invitations to the cottage meetings next week. We look forward to meeting with as many people as possible so that this potential capital campaign adequately addresses the needs of the church and the dreams and vision of the parish. Results of the Feasibility Study will be announced at our Annual Parish Meeting on Wednesday, February 3rd, 2016, during which we will also elect a new senior warden and three new vestry members. It’s going to be full but exciting! Happy New Year to all! Kyle Dice Seage+

Hailey Allin’s Ordination On Saturday, January 16, 2016, beginning at 10:30 a.m., at St. Andrew’s Cathedral, the Rev. Hailey Allin will be ordained to the Sacred Order of Priests. You are welcomed and encouraged to attend the ordination in support and thanksgiving for her ministry with us. Hailey will be with us as a priest on the fourth Sunday of January and February, and at our Easter Vigil, and after Easter, her curacy with us will end. It has been a joy for me to teach and support her during her transition from deacon to priest and I know that sentiment is shared by all of you.

BE STILL AND KNOW THAT I AM GOD

Beginning at noon on Wednesday, January 6, in the library there will be a mid-week opportunity to strengthen your relationship with God within through the contemplative disciplines of Lectio Divina and Centering Prayer. We will begin our weekly time together exploring the gospel reading for the following Sunday using Lectio Divina which is an ancient method of studying the scriptures. During Lectio Divina, we listen to the Biblical text with the "ear of the heart” as if in conversation with God and God suggesting to us the topics for discussion. The Lectio Divina method includes reading (lectio), reflecting on (meditatio), responding to (oratio) and resting in (contemplatio) the Word of God with the intent of nourishing and deepening one's relationship with God. Following our gospel discussion, we will enter into 20 minutes of Centering Prayer (silence). Traced to the practices of early Christian monastics, Centering Prayer is a popular method of Christian meditation and silent prayer during which participants, with intentional practice, experience God's presence within themselves. It is both a relationship with God and a discipline to strengthen that relationship. Never intended to replace other mental, verbal or affective prayer, Centering Prayer adds a deeper meaning to these more active methods of prayer while facilitating a receptive form of prayer which emphasizes a personal relationship with God and deepening a relationship with the living Christ. We hope that you will join us on January 6 for a more detailed explanation of both practices and participate with us every Wednesday, Noon – 1:00 p.m, thereafter ! If you have any questions, please contact Anne Mollere at 601-981-0362 (H), 601-497-0374 (C) or [email protected]

The Giving of Altar Flowers on Sunday is a wonderful way to celebrate and/or remember our loved ones. There are many open dates on the calendar (located on the bulletin board, in the narthex.) We encourage at least two people to give flowers each Sunday. The cost is $45.00 per person/family.
