Our theme this year is Called to be Courageous. St. Philippians have a history of being coura- geous, whether by stepping forward in faith fifty years ago to begin a mission church, and being leaders in the recovery in the 1979 flood, to taking on the challenge to build extra space for chil- dren. St. Philip’s has always hoped and dreamed about what God has in store for the parish and then has risen to the challenge each and every year to meet those expectations. I believe that we are on the cusp of some amazing times at St. Philip’s – every single week we have new visitors worshipping with us, there is excitement and enthusiasm about the new projects for our physical space, and opportunities for education and fun for our children are beginning to take shape. All this takes courage. Because we can’t just wish for it to happen. We have to step out with courage – with our financial commitment as well as with our presence, participation and prayers. You will be getting a letter from this year’s Stewardship Chairs, Marcie Skelton and Steve Sinquefield, in the next week or two. They will call you to be courageous and I hope you will respond, with courage. Peace, Kyle+

Dear Philippians,

With Labor Day looming, the “official” beginning of fall is upon us. St. Philip’s has had a busy summer and there are many plans for activities, events and programs for the fall. I’d like to call your attention to two important aspects of our common life together: Christian Education and Stewardship.

Sunday school for our children will resume this fall, beginning on September 9th at 9:15. Our format will be different than in the past. The children will be looking at the parables of Jesus, with crafts, lessons, games and music incorporated into their learning. Teams of teachers are being recruited so that the leadership can be rotated. If you are interested in helping, please contact Chelsea Knight. You would be assigned to lead or assist one Sunday approximately every six weeks.

An additional offering for our adults, Coffee House Christians, will also begin on Sunday, Sep-tember 9th. Our class will be discussion based, centering on contemporary cultural and social issues, and how we arrive at either solutions or opinions based on a Christian perspective. This new class will meet in what is affectionately known as “the Rummage Sale room” or, depending on the time of year, “the Goat Roast room”, though the rummage and goat roast gear have been removed. More details will be given at the first meeting. Coffee and great conversation await – see you there!

Our annual Stewardship Campaign will begin early this year with a kick-off Sunday on Septem-ber 23rd. The Rev. Corky Carlisle, an Episcopal priest with roots in Mississippi, and with a life-time full of stewardship experience, will be our guest preacher that Sunday and our speaker at the celebration lunch immediately following the 10:30 service.

Our theme this year is Called to be Courageous. St. Philippians have a history of being coura-geous, whether by stepping forward in faith fifty years ago to begin a mission church, and being leaders in the recovery in the 1979 flood, to taking on the challenge to build extra space for chil-dren. Birthday & Anniversary Wishes

The Giving of Altar Flowers on Sunday is a wonderful way to cele-brate and/or remember our loved ones. There are many open dates on the calendar (located on the bul-letin board, in the narthex.)

We encourage at least two people to give flowers each Sunday. The cost is $45.00 per person/family.

Deacon's Beacon Our Bridges Out of Poverty workshop was a huge success! Seventy people took the opportunity to spend the day with Jodi Pfarr, an expert presenter in the Bridges con-cepts. Jodi's wit, humor and personal stories kept us all engaged as we learned about the various socio-economic classes. We learned that understanding the nuances of the different socio-economic groups (wealth, middle class, poverty) can help us to understand one another better. Through this understanding, our perceptions and misconceptions change, allowing us to work together to create change in our community. Thanks to everyone for their support.

We are still in need of two Allies to work with our ladies in our Moving Ahead group. If you are interested in creating a relationship with someone and walking with them on their journey of change and discovery, please let me know.

Deborah Hanson

ALTAR GUILD NEWS

Ladies, it’s that time again. Fall is in the air, the light has changed, some nights we have to pull up the cover, the children are back in school, the Rummage Sale is over so we need to have our plans for the year. We’ve chosen Saturday, September 15 as our fall meeting—planning day. We’ll gather at 10 a.m. at St. Philip’s in the church and have at it, from flowers to wedding to funerals to fundraisers, we’ll try to cover it all. Kyle will be with us for noonday prayer and then we’ll have a light lunch. Let me know what you’d like to share and hopefully, we’ll have a nice fun-filled day. All ladies are welcome. We have new blood, and certainly we expect all the good and faithful members to be present.

Make your plans and I’ll see you on the 15th.

Love, Lucette

HOMERUN FOR HABITAT Are you ready for some softball?

On Sunday afternoon, October 28th, St. Philip’s, along with three other Jackson Episcopal churches, will be playing two soft-ball games to help raise additional funds for the 2013 Episcopal Habitat Build. While St. Philip’s has already paid its pledge toward the build, the cost of materials has gone up since our original commitment was fulfilled, so to raise the additional funds, the four churches have agreed to participate in a charity softball tournament. St. Philip’s and St. Andrew’s Cathedral will team up to play St. James’ and St. Columb’s in a double header. The first game is just for fun, young and old, coed, and only five innings. The second game is for the "Varsity", and will be seven innings. Each church is providing grillers who will cook and serve food and drinks. All four parishes are encouraged to put a lot of fans in the stands! Tickets at the gate are $15 per person (players included). That's $10 admission and $5 for food and a drink, with a $30 maximum per family.

The St. Philip’s Flamethrowers are Back! The Flamethrowers are stepping up to the plate for this cause and your very own SID (Sports Information Director) Cynthia Burgess will be calling the plays. Coach (Tom Burgess), Captain Stampley (Matt Stampley), the Wizard (Wil Skelton), Lefty Thompson (Zach), Recruiter Randy (Keng), and CB (Chris Burgess) are re-uniting after a 4 year hiatus. Contact the SID if you are interested. For all our fans out there, wear your Flamethrower red T shirt and bring your $15.00 to see the match-up of the year! VICTORY for Habitat!

More information will be coming in the October newsletter and in announcements in church. Put in on your calendar now and make plans to attend, whether to play or to cheer on our winning team!
