August 2015
First Wednesday Programs at St. Philip’s
August 5 From Minerva to Maria: How Pagan Rome Created the Christian Church
Patsy Ricks, retired Latin teacher, St. Andrew’s Episcopal School
Patsy’s presentation will help us understand how the form of the Christian Church in Rome grew from ancient Roman houses and temples to large Basilicas. In her presentation, Patsy will show slides and discuss how the following ancient places are related to the beginning of Christianity in Rome: the Pantheon, the Churches of San Nicola, Santi Giovanni e Paolo, Sante Maria Sopra Minerva, St. John’s Lateran, St. Paul’s Outside the Walls, and St. Peter’s in Rome.
September 2 Now Departing -- Social Media Flight #2015: Aisle seat or Window seat for ya?
Boty McDonald, Ridgeland City Prosecutor
From the first books to Facebook: tracing the arc of media from the invention of the printing press to the proliferation of the smart phone. Boty shares his take on profound power of the smart phone -- as a personal "telescope" on the world, as a customized "microscope" for information, and as a sweet, neat way to build deep connections and community. Listen how this old dad came to embrace and enjoy -- and use! -- Instagram and Snapchat!
October 7 Tigers, Bears and Bulldogs, Oh My:
The Strange Hidden History of College Football Mascots Jim Woodrick, Director of Mississippi Department of Archives and History
Football, it has been said, is like religion in the South. If true, then mascots are among the most cherished symbols of the “faithful.” From Bully to Mike the Tiger and Big Al, college mascots inspire a great deal of passion among fans, young and old alike. But few know the true origin of these foam-headed heroes. Historian Jim Woodrick will bring a few of these stories to light, and some might just surprise you!
November 7 Social Media, Part Deux
Many of us are connected to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat and other forms of social media. Not surprisingly, there are many who have steadfastly refused to get on board at first, and then are amazed by how the world gets both bigger and smaller through this media, whether it’s finding old high school friends, or reading New York Times articles on Twitter or retrieving long lost recipes on Pinterest. In addition, increasingly St. Philip’s is using social media for publicity, relaying information and communication. If you do not belong to any social media forums, we’d like to help you sign up! In addition, we will speak about Access, a new online program St. Philip’s that can send emails, provide an online directory, update information and make online giving easier.
December 2 Stained Glass, Advent Spirituality
Andy Young, Owner of Pearl River Glass
Artist live with the idea of advent. We are in anticipate of the creative impulse that will turn an idea into a real form, whether painting, sculpture, glass, ceramics or weaving. Andy will talk about stained glass commissions for churches and where theological ideas come from and how they are expressed.

Our study will be divided into four sections each consisting of four weekly sessions which will explore:
1. The World at the Time of Jesus

3. The Death of Jesus
4. The Resurrection
Each session begins with a 15 minute video presentation by Dr. Crossan followed by group discussion.

Outreach News
BOOK BUDDY PROGRAM It’s hard to believe, but school will be starting back in August. Our Book Buddy Ministry at McLeod School begins shortly after Labor Day. Many thanks to all who have been such faithful volunteers. We are looking forward to your continued service. There are an overwhelming number of children at McLeod who need a “buddy” because they are behind in their school-work. It requires an hour each week, of your choosing, with a child who is kindergarten through the 5th grade. If you are interested, please call Patty Clark at 601-956-6826-home, 601-201-9332-call or email [email protected]. There will be an informational meeting on Tuesday, August 18th at 9:30 a.m. at St Philips.
Life Line Screening at St. Philip's St Philip's is pleased to offer a preventive health event
Life Line Screening, a leading provider of community-based preventive health screenings, will host their affordable, non-invasive and painless health screenings on 8/31/2015. Five screenings will be offered that scan for potential health problems related to: blocked arteries which is a leading cause of stroke; abdominal aortic aneurysms which can lead to a ruptured aorta; hardening of the arteries in the legs which is a strong predictor of heart disease; atrial fibrillation or irregular heart beat which is closely tied to stroke risk; and a bone density screening, for men and women, used to assess the risk of osteoporosis.
Register for a Wellness Package which includes 4 vascular tests and osteoporosis screening from $149 ($139 with our member discount).
All five screenings take 60-90 minutes to complete. In order to register for this event and to receive a $10 discount off any package priced above $129, please call 1-888-653-6441 or visit www.lifelinescreening.com/community-partners.

Ultreya News De Colores!!
What is a Cursillo Weekend?
Cursillo comes from the Spanish and means "a short course". The Cursillo Movement is introduced over a consecutive seventy-two hour period called a "Three Day Weekend." During the three day weekend, which begins Thursday evening and ends Sunday afternoon, a team of Episcopal Priests and/or Deacons and lay personnel present a series of talks to the entire group. The team and candidates discuss these talks in small groups. The discussions provide an opportunity to share insights about the presentations and hear how others received that same presentation. The talks and discussions cover a variety of topics including:
The lay person's role within the Church Meaning of grace and sacraments Importance of prayer and the study of God Christian leadership and living Christianity in community Our call to transform the very environments in which we live The importance of supporting one another in our efforts to live a truly Christian life
In addition, throughout the weekend the participants will attend daily Eucharist. Typically, by the end of the weekend, all participants and staffers have a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ and a better understanding of the power of the Holy Spirit. Also, everyone will leave the weekend having met new friends throughout the state. The next Cursillo #129 weekend will be held September 24-27, 2015 at Gray Center in Canton. We have a few St. Philippians attending and if you are interested, don't hesitate to ask someone. What is an Ultreya Meeting?
"Ultreya" is a Spanish word, derived from the original Latin, meaning Onward! This word is used by the Cursillo community to signify the meeting which is held after a Cursillo experience. This meeting is held in conjunction with several other Jackson area parishes and provides continuity and continues to uphold the community. Everyone is invited and encouraged to come to an Ultreya meeting, even though one might not have attended a weekend.
The Ultreya meeting this month is Monday, August 24th beginning at 6:30. We will begin with snacks/refreshments and the program will start at 7:00pm. As always, would love for you to bring a friend, snack and or just yourself! The location of the meeting is at Charmont Clubhouse is located at 100 Charmont Place in Ridgeland (off Lake Harbor Drive). Drive close to the gate and it will open automatically.
The Giving of Altar Flowers on Sunday is a wonderful way to celebrate and/or remember our loved ones. There are many open dates on the calendar (located on the bulletin board, in the narthex.)
We encourage at least two people to give flowers each Sunday. The cost is $45.00 per person/family.

Welcome to ACCESS for ACS!
Our online Parish Directory is HERE! Go to our web site at http://stphilips.dioms.org and clink on the Online Giving link. You will have to register the first time and set up your password. Once logged in, you can search for fellow parishioners, set up Online Giving, review your current pledge. You can then use electronic giving as a way to automate your regular offerings.
Electronic giving is convenient for you and provides much-needed donation consistency for our congregation. When travel, illness or other circumstances prevent you from attending services, this program will allow your offerings to continue on an uninterrupted basis.
ATTENTION St. Philip’s Licensed Lay Eucharist Ministers
St. Philip’s is providing Licensed Lay Leader training to be held September 19th. Beginning with Noonday Prayer, lunch will follow, and then training with David O’Steen and the Rev. Kyle Dice Seage. All Licensed Lay Leaders are urged to attend. This training will count toward recertification at the end of 2015. RSVP to the Parish Administrator Lisa Estes-Dorrell [email protected] so we will have an accurate headcount for lunch.
Altar Guild Meeting: September 19th, 10:00 a.m. lunch to follow.
GOAT ROAST NEWS The 34th Annual Goat Roast and Bluegrass Mass is October 11th. Make plans with your family and friends to spend the day celebrating this time honored tradition.
So….What’s happening at Goat Roast this Year?
Saturday, October 10th, the meat cooking team and the sides preparation team will come to St. Philip’s to start Goat Roast weekend. Activities will start about 9:00 am. Stay tuned for details.
Saturday Night Cooking Party is a great way to continue the Goat Roast fun. The cooking grills will still be hot so bring something to grill and a side to share and enjoy Live Music at this pre-event event. All of the meat will be ready to pull that evening so come prepared to help pull and chop!
Of course The Vernon Brothers will be leading us in our wonderful, musical celebration at the service and after in the Hollow.
We will have sponsorships again. There was an overwhelming response from the community the past couple years in the desire to support Habitat for Humanity. If you are interested or know someone who may be interested in sponsoring, please contact Kenny or Julie.
Goat Roast defines St. Philip’s to the Jackson community so let’s put our best foot forward. Please commit to volunteering! It’s a great way to get involved in a really fun church event. Contact Julie and Kenny Goforth to find out more at [email protected]. We will have an organizational meeting, stay tuned for more details.
Tickets and t- shirts will go on sale in September.
REMEMBER: If you are unable to serve, it is your responsibility to secure a replacement.
