Summer may be OVER… but EYC is just about to BEGIN!
6th – 12th Graders, mark your calendars!
The new EYC year will kick off on September 15th.
This year, we’re shaking things up a bit. Because we have so many new youth coming into EYC (yay!), we want to make sure EYC is a fun, enriching experience for all. Therefore, we’ll alternate weeks between Jr. EYC (6th - 8th) and Sr. EYC (9th - 12th).
Parents, watch your emails in August. A calendar for the year is coming soon.
Please email Caroline at [email protected] or call her at 601-398-6249 with any questions.
It’s going to be a great year for St. Philip’s EYC!
The Giving of Altar Flowers on Sunday is a wonderful way to celebrate and/or remember our loved ones. There are many open dates on the calendar (located on the bulletin board, in the narthex.)
We encourage at least two people to give flowers each Sunday.
The cost is $45.00 per person/family.

GOAT ROAST NEWS
The 32nd Annual Goat Roast and Bluegrass Mass is October 13th. Make plans
with your family and friends to spend the day celebrating this time honored tradition. So….What’s happening at Goat Roast this Year?
Saturday, October 12th, the meat cooking team and the sides preparation team will come to St. Philip’s to start Goat Roast weekend. Activities will start about 9:00 am. Stay tuned for details.
Saturday Night Cooking Party is a great way to continue the Goat Roast fun. The cooking grills will still be hot so bring
something to grill and a side to share and enjoy Live Music at this pre-event event. All of the meat will be ready to pull that evening so come prepared to help pull and chop!
Of course The Vernon Brothers will be leading us in our wonderful, musical celebration at the service and after in the
hollow. The Petting Zoo is always a favorite activity on Goat Roast Sunday. Be sure to stop by to see and play with the
animals Ms. Tammy will bring this year and buy a pumpkin in the pumpkin patch while you’re there. We will have sponsorships again. There was an overwhelming response from the community last year in the desire
to support the Jackson community. If you are interested or know someone who may be interested in sponsoring, please contact Randy Keng, [email protected].
Goat Roast defines St. Philip’s to the Jackson community so let’s put our best foot forward. Please commit to volunteering! It’s a great way to get involved in a really fun church event. Contact Lee and Betty Smithson to find out more at [email protected]. We will have an organizational meeting after supper on August 7th.
Tickets and t- shirts will go on sale in September.

Soltero
The next meeting of Soltero will be held on Friday night, August 2.
We will meet at the Jackson Yacht Club on the deck at 5:30 p.m. The Yacht Club does accept all major credit cards, but no cash or checks so bring your credit card! If you think you might want to stay for dinner, please contact Beverly Herbert at 601.927.5507 or [email protected] and let her know by noon on Thursday August 1. Otherwise, we hope to see you there!
Stewpot - Weekdays
We are looking for some more volunteers to serve at Stewpot on weekdays. We serve about 4 or 5 times a year Monday through Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to about 1:00 p.m. If you are interested, please contact Patty Clark for more information, [email protected]
Listening Session
The Nominating Committee for the election of a new Bishop of Mississippi is hosting Listening Sessions around the diocese during the month of August. This Listening Session is your opportunity to tell the Committee what is important to you, and they invite you to come and participate as we mutually discern who our next bishop will be. The Committee expects that the Listening Session will last no longer than one and a half hours, depending on attendance and participation. If you cannot attend this session, please check the Diocese of Mississippi's website for more opportunities. (www.dioms.org) There is a link for the Bishop Search on the left of the home page.
Listening Session for the Central Convocation:
Monday, August 5th St. James' Episcopal Church in
Jackson, beginning at 6:00 p.m.
Honduras Medical Mission The Honduras Medical Mission team has a new opportunity for parishioners across the diocese to directly assist with the mission. Over the past few years the team has devel-oped a more affordable and sensible “family pack” ap-proach for medical needs for routine ailments. The ap-proach is to create standardized packages of normal house-hold remedies to give to every family unit coming through the clinic. To assist the team we are asking parishioners to visit their local Dollar Tree, Everything’s a Dollar or similar store and purchase some of the items listed below. The items can be found in appropriate size containers at these retail stores. You can purchase according to your budget and heart, we need every item in a quantity of roughly 3000 each so there is plenty of need. Some may want to buy $5 worth and others may feel led to purchase $500 worth. Again we will take all we can get. The local team in Laurel will consolidate and pack the items for shipment to Honduras. The team bids your prayers over the coming months as we undertake this task. THE LIST OF NEEDED ITEMS, 3000 OF EACH ARE NEEDED
Eye Drops – Murine or like kind Antifungal Cream Antibiotic Cream Hydrocortisone Cream Dyphenhydramine Elixir (Generic Benadryl Liquid) Children’s Pain Reliever (Generic Tylenol Liquid) Antacid Tablets (Generic Tums) Generic Pepto Bismal Tablets or Liquid
Please drop off items at the parish office.

The following is the sixth and seventh a series of Philippians’ memories of our church during the last 50 years. We hope any and all of you will join us in this effort as part of our anniversary celebration. Just jot down a couple of paragraphs and send them to Lisa or drop them by the church office. If you have questions, call Sigrid Conway (601) 956-5173. Thank you!!!
St. Philip's Reminiscence
Usually the choir sings two anthems for Sunday morning Eucharists’ One particular morning I remember was back in the 1980's when Leslie Casaday was Organist and Principal Parish Musician. For the Offertory anthem, which was to be sung a cappella, Leslie played the opening four notes for soprano, alto, tenor and bass on the organ, giving us our pitches, then walked around to the front of the choir to conduct, and we started singing. Oh my...after a few measures, it was obvious something was wrong - we were terribly off-key. Leslie stopped us, gave us a withering look we knew so well, and slowly walked back around the organ. He played the four pitches again, came back in front of the choir pews, lifted his arms and brought us in for the second time. After a few short measures, it sounded no better that time. He stopped us, and, oh, my goodness, we got that "look" again. We were all pretty embarrassed by then and didn't want to make eye contact with anyone in the congregation. What was happening? We knew this piece! He walked back around the organ console, played four different pitches, slowly walked back to us, lifted his arms and quietly said, "This better be good." Well, this time it was good! He had been giving us the pitches for the other anthem we were singing for Communion! We got a standing ovation! Mat Ellison Tommy and I had been coming to the St. Philip’s Goat Roast long before we moved our letter to St. Philip’s. We liked the smaller, family oriented, friendly parish, and the diversity of the music. We also knew so many of the people at St. Philip’s and we were always made to feel welcome when we visited. What really was the icing on the cake for us was on April 4, 2008. Our house was damaged by the tornado that roared through Jackson that day. We were outside assessing the damage and trying to decide what we needed to do first when someone inquired: “What can I do to help?” We both turned to see Tom Slawson in our driveway. Although we had not located a place to live while our home was being rebuilt, we both knew we had located a church home. We both had been actively involved for 33 years at St. James’ and we had decided that we would arrive at St. Philip’s a little before the service was to start and leave immediately at the end of the service. We would simply “go to church” and not become involved. Well, you know about how long that lasted. The activities of St. Philip’s cause one to become involved. Let me warn you, when you are asked to do something, it is very hard to turn St. Philip’s folks down. Pat Sebrell
