A M E S S A G E F R O M T H E E X E C U T I V E D I R E C T O R

One Soul at a Time“The poor you will always have with you,” Jesus says in Mark 14:7. While the full verse reminds His disciples to worship Him, His opening statement is also like a prophecy: Poverty will never go away. How can we possibly fix a problem like that?

At Central Union Mission, we do it one person at a time—the way Jesus did.

We can’t help all seven thousand people who sleep on the DC streets each night. We can’t even guarantee that all of the Mission’s 170 nightly guests will successfully rejoin their community. However, we trust God to bring to the Mission those who are ready, so we serve Him faithfully.

2017 brought our newly remodeled Family Ministry Center, which gives us the space to help more struggling families. We also made some great friends and rose to new challenges. I know this annual report will encourage you about what your gifts accomplished.

We are so grateful for our friends who volunteer at the Mission, and we covet every prayer. We also want to assure you that while you are following your daily calling and obeying God’s commands to help the poor, the treasures you invest in Central Union Mission are touching lives every day.

Blessings,

David Treadwell (center) and Social Work Director Shirley Johnson congratulate Shawn Garnett on his graduation from the Spiritual Transformation Program.

One gives freely, yet grows all the richer; another withholds what they should give, and only suffers want.

Whoever brings blessing will be enriched, and one who waters will himself be watered.

Proverbs 11:24–25 ESV

Seniors LuncheonsEvery month, senior citizens join us for a game of Bingo, a delicious lunch, an inspirational message and a bag full of groceries. 17 Seniors Luncheons were held in both English and Spanish, with an average of 250 attendees each month. Four families lived in the Mission’s Lambert House, our low-income housing facility.
