Deciding what kind of dog to get is asimportant as deciding whether toget a dog in the first place. The AKC

recognizes over 160different breeds ofdog, and each of these breeds has itsown unique temperament, appearance, activity level, and set of needs.

You should do some serious and careful re-search to determine which breed of dog is rightfor you and your family. And you can start hereat AKC Meet the Breeds®! This event is the per-fect place to spend the day interacting withbreed experts who can answer all of your ques-tions about finding the right dog for yourlifestyle. Here some factors to consider:

TemperamentYou’re going to be living with this dog for a longtime,so you need to make sure he has a personal-ity you can live with.Do you want a dog that is ac-tive,or subdued? A dog that is easily trained,orstrong-willed? A dog that is friendly to everyonehemeets,or one that is loyal to family but aloof to-

ward strangers? A dog thatneeds a lot of attention fromfamily members, and lots ofactivity to prevent him frombecoming bored and de-

structive,or a dog that is con-tent to be left alone forperiods of time during theday?

SizeAll little puppies areadorable, of course, but theygrow quickly—and some ofthem grow a lot. Find outhow large—in height andweight—that cute puppy will

become before you bring him home. Rememberthat larger dogs require more food and space—is your yard or living room big enough to meethis needs? And keep in mind that some littledogs still need lots of room to run around andburn off energy.

Coat/Grooming NeedsAll dogs need to be groomed regularly to stayhealthy and clean; most dogs will shed. Butsome dogs shed profusely all year round; someshed in clumps for a few weeks; some dogsshed only a little bit. Long-coated dogs arebeautiful to look at, but require a lot of effort tostay that way. Short-coated dogs are easier tocare for, but may still shed, and may requireprotection in cold or wet weather. Dogs withfancy trims may need professional grooming.Decide how much dog hair you’re willing to putup with, and how much time and energy you canafford, when you’re deciding which breed isright for you.

Male or Female? In general, there is no significant difference in

temperament between male and fe-male dogs. If you are getting a dog fora pet, you will want to have your dogspayed or neutered, which will elim-inate most minor differences any-way. If you plan to show or breedyour dog, you must be vigilantabout preventing unwantedbreedings by keeping your in-tact male safely confined to yourhouse or yard, and by keepingyour intact female away from otherdogs when she comes into heattwice yearly.

Puppy or Adult? The advantage of getting a puppy—aside from itsirresistible cuteness—is that you can raise it your-self from the beginning, and participate in itstraining and socialization every step of the way.The disadvantage is that training a puppy re-quires a great deal of time and patience. Busyfamilies should keep in mind that puppies cannotbe left alone for more than a few hours at a time. They need plenty of trips outside, frequent meals, and lots of interaction with people. Adult dogs—whether purchased directly from a breeder oradopted from a rescue group—can be ideal forpeople who want a dog with fewer needs. Maturedogs tend to be calmer; some are already house-trained and know basic obedience.

HealthSome breeds may be prone to hereditary diseasesor conditions. Many breeds can be screened forcertain conditions, such as hip or eye problems; thiscertification should be available to you when you goto look at a puppy. Being educated about the healthconsiderations of your chosen breed can help youto avoid or alleviate future problems.

Other Ways to SearchWe recommend starting your search for a puppy bycontacting the breed’s Parent Club. The AKC’s On-line Breeder Classifieds, sponsored by K9 Advantix,is another way to find the best puppy for you. Onceyou know which breed you’re looking for, you canuse the service to find puppies in your area. The

service also identifies AKC Breeder ofMerit participants—breeders with over

15 years of experience who’ve demon-strated exceptional dedication to improv-ing their breeds. When looking for apuppy, you should visit the breeder’shome to see the whelping facilities, thelitter, the dam, and possibly the sire.

And We Love Mixed-Breeds Too!Mixed-breed dog owners can now en-roll their dog in the AKC Canine Part-ners program. Mixed-breed dogs andtheir owners will be able to partici-pate in agility, rally, and obedience

competitions held by AKC-affiliated dog clubsnationwide and access many AKC programs andservices, including lifetime enrollment in AKCCompanion Animal Recovery (AKC CAR). For fulldetails, visit akccaninepartners.org.

Bringing a new pet into your family involves a

long-term commitment of time, energy, and

money. Buying your kitten from a responsi-

ble breeder is one step in getting off to the best

possible start with your new family member.

What can you expect from a responsiblebreeder? When you buy a kitten from a respon-sible breeder, you can expect the breeder toguarantee that your kitten is in good health, butsuggest that you have your own veterinarianexamine your kitten within a few days of pur-chase to confirm its good health. You will be re-quired to have your kitten spayed or neuteredat an appropriate age. Some breeders willhave already done this for you! You will be re-quired to sign a sales agreement to outline theconditions of releasing the kitten to your care. Finally, a responsible breeder will be intenselyinterested in the welfare of your kitten and en-

courage you to call whenever youhave questions or concerns aboutyour kitten.

How can you tell if your kitten ishealthy? Handle the kitten. Itshould have good muscle tone, aclean coat, and bright, clear eyes. The kitten should not be sneezingor sniffling. Its eyes should be freeof discharge and its ears shouldbe clean and pink inside. Thereshould be no bald patches orsigns of dry, flaky skin.

How can I tell if a kitten is well socialized? Playwith the kitten using a non-threatening toy such asa feather or ribbon. After a period of normal cau-tion, the kitten should relax and become friendly, active and playful. Many perfectly friendly kittenswould rather play than be held; however, after be-coming acquainted with you, the kitten should letyou hold it, at least for a short time. Remember, kittens have lots of energy to release!

When can I take the kitten home? Most respon-sible breeders allow their kittens to go to newhomes at 12 weeks of age or older. This is a per-fect age to make the transition to a new home. At12 weeks, a kitten is weaned, litter trained, and hasbeen vaccinated at least twice. Don't worry, it stillhas plenty of comical, lovable kittenhood to go!

Will I receive the kitten's "papers?" When youget your kitten, you'll receive its health/vaccinationrecord and a written sales agreement. After youhave the kitten altered and send the breeder a vet-erinarian's certificate of neutering or spaying, thebreeder will send you the kitten's registrationform. You should also receive a pedigree for thekitten. To register the kitten, you fill out the regis-tration form and send it with the proper fee to theappropriate registering body.

What should I do after I bring the kittenhome? When you bring your kitten home, make sure you follow the breeder's instructionscarefully. Making the transition to a new homecan be very stressful for any cat. Changes infood, water, litter, and overall environment can P

cause minor ailments, even in healthy cats.

Why is the breeder asking me questions? Don’t be offended if the breeder asks you questions. The breeder is not trying to embarrass or intimidateyou; they are simply trying to determine whethertheir kitten will have the “forever” home they wouldwant for it. They are striving to find the best possiblehome for each kitten.

Why buy from a responsible breeder? While no one can guarantee that your kitten willnever have a medical problem, a responsiblebreeder’s commitment to ethical/responsible breed-ing increases your chances of getting a healthy, well-adjusted kitten.

What about the pet overpopulation problem?A responsible breeder is acutely aware of the vastnumbers of unwanted cats and kittens, and breedsfor quality rather than quantity. Breeding a cat withless than ideal “show conformation” adds to the petoverpopulation problem and degrades the overallquality of the breed. Please don’t feel that you canoffset the cost of the kitten by having “just one litter.”Have all your pets altered!

How do I decide on a breed? Try to visit a catshow in your community. You can always find a cal-endar of shows being held, all over TICA’s world,by going to the TICA website (www.tica.org).While you are at the show, take the opportunity totalk to breeders of various breeds. Be sure to findout how much grooming each breed requires andwhether the breed has any special needs or charac-teristics. Cat books, cat magazines, andthe internet are other good sources ofinformation. If you haven't decided ona breed, or if the expense of a pure-bred kitten is beyond your currentbudget, please con-

sider adopting a cat orkitten from a localshelter. There aremany lovely andloving cats in needof good homes.Plus, if you wouldlike to join the funof showing a cat,TICA shows welcomeyou to compete alongwith our classes of pedi-greed cats.

Questions to Ask

1. What are the characteristics of this breed?

A responsible breeder will behappy to discuss the breed’s characteristics andspecial requirements with you. Some breeds re-quire more grooming than others. Some are moreactive or vocal. Others may be shy or aloof. Besure you discuss not only the breed's characteris-tics with the breeder, but also the personalities ofindividual kittens. Choose the right breed and kit-ten for your lifestyle and personal preferences.

2. Do you provide a written sales agreement thatincludes a health guarantee?

A responsible breeder sells a kitten only with a writ-ten contract that includes a health guarantee.Make sure you both understand the terms of thisguarantee.

3. What diseases and conditions does your healthguarantee cover?

4. How are are the kittens raised?

A responsible breeder puts careful thought andmuch care into raising healthy, outgoing kittens, and will be happy to discuss their methods withyou.

Just a few of the unusualbreeds seen last year were theBerger Picard (above) and theOtterhound (near left). Also onhand, a Pembroke Welsh Corgiand his “queen” and a RescueInk ambassador.

At last year’s AKC Meet the Breeds® more than 39,000 pet lovers came out to shake pawswith hundreds of dogs and cats—some perennial favorites and some so rare that mostpeople had only ever seen them in books. In between strolls down the pup-packed aisles, dog lovers were riveted to the nonstop action in the demo rings by police dogs, flyballchamps, service dogs, and obedience and agility stars, both canine and feline.

So now it’s your turn to greet the breeds you know and the ones you don’t. To dogs, astranger is just a friend they haven’t met yet.

Dog Shows Known as “conformation,” dog shows areintended to evaluate breeding stock and determine howwell a dog conforms to his breed standard. Dog showscombine the thrill of competition with the joy of seeingmagnificent dogs up close.

AKC’s Canine Good Citizen® (CGC) Program isa two-part test that rewards dogs who possess goodmanners at home and in their community and responsi-ble pet ownership. All dogs who pass the 10-step CGC test may receive a certificate fromthe AKC. Many owners choose CGC trainingas the first step on the road to a well-behaveddog because it lays the foundation for otherAKC activities such as obedience, agility, tracking, and performance events. Trainingenhances the canine-human bond becausedogs who have a solid obedience educationare a joy to live with and respond well to household rou-tines, have good manners in the presence of people andother dogs, and fully enjoy the company of the ownerwho took the time to provide training, intellectual stimu-lation, and a high-quality life.

Obedience Trials are one of the AKC’s oldest tradi-tions—it is a sport of finesse, precision, and accuracy.Obedience trials showcase dogs who have been trainedand conditioned to behave well in the home, in publicplaces, and in the presence of other dogs. AKC trialsallow exhibitors and their dogs to enjoy companionshipand competition as they proudly earn AKC titles.

AKC Rally is a dog sport that has been taking thenation by storm, and it is a successful stepping-stonefrom the AKC Canine Good Citizen® program to theworld of obedience or agility. Rally offers both dogs andowners an experience that is fun and exhilarating. Thedog and handler move at their own pace, very similarto rally-style auto racing, navigating a course made upof 10 to 20 stations with directional signs. No two

courses are the same, so it is a perfect event for first-time competitors.

Agility Running a dog in an agility trial is the ultimategame for you and your dog and is one of the most excit-ing canine sports for spectators. In an agility trial, a dogdemonstrates its agile nature and versatility by followingcues from the handler through a timed obstacle courseof jumps, tunnels, weave poles, and other objects. Agilityis a fast-paced sport that relies on nearly flawless com-munication between handler and dog and offers excite-ment and exercise for both, which may explain why it’sbecome the fastest-growing dog sport in the UnitedStates!

Tracking As you know, dogs have a very keen senseof smell—100,000 times stronger than humans! Em-

ploying this miraculous ability, dogs are oftenused to find lost people and animals, drugs, disaster victims, and even to detect cancer.Tracking demonstrates the dog’s natural tal-ent for recognizing and following a scent. Un-like obedience and rally trials, where dogsrespond to a handler’s commands, in track-ing the dog is completely in charge—only heknows how to use his nose to find and follow

the track. For many, the greatest pleasure of tracking isthe hours spent outside training and interacting withtheir dogs.

The Coursing Ability Test is an introductory eventfashioned after the sport lure coursing. It’s a lively andhealthy activity attractive to wide range of dog owners.Structured as a noncompetitive pass/fail where dogs runsingularly after a lure, the event is open to all dogs atleast 12 months of age who are registered with the AKC,recorded in the FSS program, have a PAL number, orare enrolled in the AKC Canine Partners program.

Noncompetitive Earthdog Tests offer owners ofsmall terriers and Dachshunds a standardized meas-urement of their dogs’ natural aptitude and trainedhunting- and working behaviors when exposed to anunderground den. The program begins with a basic in-troduction and progresses through the gradual stepsthat require the dog to prove he is willing to performthe tasks of seeking his quarry, then locating andworking it underground.
