• Paul McCartney talked John Lennon into auditioning his younger friend, George Harrison, to be in the band

• The Beatles went through several names such as Johnny and the Moondogs, The Silver Beatles, until their final name The Beatles.

The Beatles first came to America together on February 7, 1964.

His family gave out a statement saying: "He left this world as he lived in it, conscious of God, fearless of death, and at peace, surrounded by family and friends. He often said, 'Everything else can wait but the search for God cannot wait, and love one another."'

Ringo Starr and Sir Paul McCartney are the last Beatles alive.

Sir Paul McCartney was knighted by the Queen of England on March 11, 1997.
