1st Qtr - CAL kicks off and LCA starts on their own 34 yard-line. They run strong for two first downs and then throw a 30 yard touchdown pass to take the lead 6-

0. LCA kicks off and CAL’s offense takes over. Jeffrey Vazzana (#2) takes the first hand off for a touchdown but the play is called back. CAL continues its strong running game marching it down to the 20 yard line

with a 4th and 1 to end the quarter. 2nd Qtr - CAL runs for a first down to start the quarter but an interception stops the drive. LCA runs and passes effectively during their drive and eventually run it in for a touchdown and a 12-0 lead. LCA kicks off and Stone Perkins (#21) makes a nice return to the 50 yard line. Colin Daniels (#8) passes to Chapman Russell (#4) for back to back first downs. Another pass from Daniels to Micah Akin (#11) for a first down is followed by a nice touchdown run by Russell which tightens the score 12-6 at half time. CAL’s sustained drive to end the half was a huge momentum changer.

3rd Qtr - LCA kicks off to start the second half. Cooper May (#30) fields the kick and makes a great return to the 48 yard line. Vazzana starts the drive with a 30 yard burst followed by Vazzana breakaway run for touch-down (52 yards on two runs!) tying the score 12 - 12. CAL kicks off and LCA’s offense takes over. A run for first down followed by a 20-yard pass for first down takes the ball down to the red zone. The quarter ends with LCA facing their own 4th and 1. 4th Qtr - MOST EXCITING QUARTER OF THE YEAR - LAC makes the fist down and runs in for a touchdown on 1st and goal making the score LCA 18 - CAL 12. LAC kicks off and CAL takes over on its 40 yard line. Vazzana continues rushing the ball and makes a first down. This is followed by a Daniels to Russell pass for 20 yards an another first down. Vazzana then takes the next hand off and runs in from 16 yards out for a touchdown. Madden Miller (#9) faces a crucial extra point attempt and kicks it through giving CAL a 19 - 18 lead.

CAL kicks off and after shutting down LCA’s run attempts, LCA connects on a perfect 65-yard passing touchdown to retake the lead 24 - 19. LCA kicks off and CAL takes over on their 35 yard line. Vazzana starts the drive (2 minutes 41 seconds left) with a beau-tiful 20 yard run. After losing yardage and facing a 4th and 4, Vazzana makes the “must have” first down carrying several LCA players on his back.

With less than a minute to go, Daniels completes a huge, crucial pass to Russell all the way down to the 10 yard line. Next play, Rus-sell takes the ball on a reverse down to the 1 yard line. With 2 sec-

onds on the clock, runs in the touchdown. Madden Miller kicks the extra point and CAL wins 26 - 24! What a game! Their next opponent is Caverna Middle School in a semi-final State Championship game!

Observations: a) this was a battle of two great teams and it’s a shame someone had to lose, b) CAL showed great resiliency taking the lead, losing it and regaining it - they never gave up; they just kept fighting, c) the team is 9 -1; what a great season, d) two extra points were the difference in the score - Madden Miller made two great kicks under tremen-dous pressure, d) words do not do justice for the unbelievable running by Jeffery Vazzana throughout the game, e) executing a crucial throw and catch for huge yardage from Daniels to Russell with seconds left in

the game was incredible to watch, e) hats off to the coaching staff for having the team ready to play, f) most important, Christ was glorified with both teams praying together after the game.

After recovering a fumble on the opening kickoff. The Centurions drove down to the Jets 16 yard line. From there, Jayden Leak scored the first of his three touchdowns scampering around left end for the

score. After a Jets TD, Jackson Burke hit Will Graham on 4th and 6 from the Jets 37 for a touchdown. Braeden Meade and Aaron Soete also caught first half touchdown passes from Burke who completed 9 of 11 passes. Taking a 29-13 lead to the half, the Centurions opened the second half with a scoring drive from the Jets 40, capped by an 18 yard run by Leak. Leak finished the scoring on a 72 yard kickoff return. He also added 3 kicked extra points which are worth 2 points in the LYFL. This group of players started Draper Hall's coaching four years ago as Pee Wees. They have amassed a dominating 36-2 record over that span.

The CAL Mighty Mites knew they were up for a challenge against the undefeated Hikes Point Lobos. And the rainy weather made things even more interesting. But the rainy

weather and daunting opponent couldn’t put a damper on the enthusiasm and energy that the players, coaches, and fans brought to being in the cham-pionship game, hosted at Martha Layne Collins High School in Shelbyville. Team Mom Meghan Brakmeier made things extra special for the boys and created a banner for them to crash through to get things started.

Captains Jake Blandford, Jack Lowe, John Digby, and Collin Hammer represented CAL for the coin toss and won, deferring to the sec-ond half. Hikes Point then got things off to a quick start with an impressive 60 yard touchdown run, going up 8-0. CAL then went three and out on its first drive, with QB Jake Blandford unfortunately being knocked out of the rest of the game after taking a helmet to the hand on its third play. That would change the game plan slightly, with backup QB Preston Burge stepping up to take snaps, as well as Jack Lowe running some wildcat formation.

After CAL’s punt, Hikes Point took over at its own 31 yard line, and on their next play, handed off to one of their shifty running backs who carried for a 69 yard touch-down run. CAL held them on the extra point, and the Lobos were up 13-0. After CAL was stopped again, and the Lobos put together a long drive, they punched another one in to go up 19-0 at the end of the 1st quarter. CAL then got the ball back, and put together a nice drive, converting on 4th and 1, and a couple plays later, RB Jack Lowe broke free for a 58 yard touchdown run straight up the middle! At the 6:56 mark in the second quarter, it was 19-6. Hikes Point added one more TD to go up 25-6 at halftime. CAL defense played espe-cially well in the 3rd quarter, stopping the Lobos from scoring, and after both teams exchanged the ball a couple times, things remained at 25-6 at the end of the 3rd. The good defense by CAL carried over to the 4th quarter as well, stopping the Lobos and containing their many offensive weapons. In the closing minutes, the Lobos man-aged to score once more, making the final score 31-6.

Despite the loss, the CAL Mighty Mites held their heads high and walked off the field proud to be the 2021 LYFL Runners-Up. In a matter of just a few weeks, the Centurions went from last place at 0-4, to securing a 3 seed for the playoffs, upsetting the 2 seed West End Yellowjackets, and then playing for a championship. In fact, this is only the second time in the last 10 years that the CAL Mighty Mite program has made the championship game! These first and second graders show a lot to promise for the foot-ball years ahead! A special thanks to Coach Eric Lowe and all the assistants, Rebecca Mauzy, Meghan Brakmeier, all the cheerlead-ers and their parents, and of course the parents of players for a successful season!
