    Cold Storage

0 Where is the nearest Cold Storage here?

0 Do your parents normally shop at Cold Storage for theirgroceries? Why?

0 Answer: The nearest here to NCHS would of course be theone in Compass Point. Students who answered yes, theirresponse would be the fact that Cold Storage has areputation of selling only the freshest ingredients. Also,

non-local produce can be found there compared to othersupermarkets. Those who answered no would likely giveresponses like cost and accessibility.

All of Emilys sons went here. It is a Mission school. Kheong studied here.

Remind students that Emily is a Pernakan Christian and it was quite natural for

them to send their children to mission schools.

    Do you know that

0 Robinsons was established in 1858

0 It was first at Commercial Square (now Raffles Place)

and then moved to to the corner ofNorth Bridge Roadand Coleman Street

0 Robinsons early clients were the Malay rulers and

    even the King of Siam

    0

In 1972, the Raffles Place outlet caught fire and thecompany moved to Orchard Road

    HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE

ANG MO KIO?0 Full of HDB flats

    0 ANG MO KIO HUB

0 Air-conditioned interchange0 Nearby! (What are the buses that go there from

    NCHS?)

0 High property value because it is near town and a

    matured estate

    16/20

    Do you know that

0 Before the development of Ang Mo Kio, much of the

land area was plantation estates, especially in rubber

    0

During 1922-1932, the price of rubber droppeddrastically and many of the people living in Ang Mo

Kio turned to pig and poultry farming or market

    gardening

0 When the Japanese occupied Singapore, many turned

    to farming there

A picture of Ang Mo Kio in the early 70s during a blackout. Blackouts were

common in the 70s and 80s and residents used to store candles when such

    power outages occurred.

One of the new modern flats that Emily mentions. Imagine her son living here

with his wife. Get the students to see how life would differ for the son after living in

a mansion for years. Get students to see also how different the flats of today are

    compared to the early years.

How is this significant to our

play?0 Remember that the play opens in 1950 and that Emily is already

    married with four children.

0 Therefore, Emilys knowledge ofAng Mo Kio when the play opens is

that of a crude farming area, not a polished area like her EmeraldHill.

0 Development in Ang Mo Kio only began in the 1970s, just about thesame time when her son decided to move out into the new modernflats.

0 Students should be made aware of the picture of Singapore whenthe story takes place. Ang Mo Kio when the story takes place wasa rural area. Emily hence was living a luxurious lifestylecompared to many of the other Singaporeans who were still livingin villages and whose main occupation was simple farming.

    Conclusion

0 When reading the play, keep in mind the places

mentioned in the play as they were back then

    0

Notice that Emily is privileged after marrying Kheong. The places that she goes for her everyday shopping

and her lifestyle is the norm for the wealthy in

    Singapore back then

0 Notice how modernisation in Singapore paved the

way for more people to be able to afford their own

homes and for more social equity
