Time For Summer

Melissa Wells, [email protected]

Gardening tip: By now, you should be enjoying the fruits of your gardening labor. However, ifyou are reading this and haven’t planted a seed, it is not too late. Most gardenstores, nurseries, and home centers offer seedlings and plants that already havea head start and are very easy to transplant. If you think that space is an issue, not to worry. Many flowers and vegetables can be grown easily in patio pots.Even if you only have a small outdoor space, you can still have a garden. Plantlettuce seeds in organic potting soil in your deck planter, grow tomatoes in alarge pot, or buy one of the ones that you can hang on your patio. Theseplanters and pots can also be elevated for ease of use if you have difficulty or areunable to bend and reach. There are so many options available! Even if youthink your thumb is brown rather than green, give it a try. Seed packets canoften be purchased for a dollar or less and planting can be as simple as sprinkling them into a pot or patch of ground. Visit a nursery, garden center, or botanical garden. Walk around and get ideas. If nothing else, the fresh air and beauty will inspire you to think green!

G et ready for five weeksof fun and excitement forChildren with the Robert

F. Sink Memorial Library’sSummer Reading Program.

In our daily lives at Child, Youth andSchool Services (CYSS) on Fort Campbell,we recognize the deep impact the Armyhas on us, the freedoms that give us comfort, the jobs that we have, and thechildren that we love. None of thesethings are possible without our Army. What better way to celebrate our love forthe Army than to celebrate the ArmyBirthday!

On June 14, CYSS will take theday and celebrate! Children will be eatingand sharing cake and ice cream with parents, reading the story of the Armybirthday, baking and designing their own

versions of the Army birthday cake, drawing pictures of Army Birthday celebrations, writing/producing Army rapsongs and learning alittle bit of Army history. This is a dayCYSS celebrates because we love andsupport the missionof our Soldiers andthe Army. We wantthe children andyouth of CYSS, from infants to teenagers,to be a part of thiscelebration. In a way,we are paying tribute to the children andFamilies that make up the Army. Celebrating the birthday is a time to thankparents and children for what they do forus and the sacrifices they make. They arewhat make us who we are and they are

the reason we do what we do every day.For our children and Families, the Army istheir every day way of life. Taking a day

out to celebratebrings into perspective howfortunate we arefor what theArmy has donefor Families andcontinues to dofor the future.

In the wordsof Michael Montague,

age 9, 3301 SchoolAge Services (SAS) site, “We celebratethe Army birthday to show appreciationfor the Army because they serve ourcountry and it celebrates my Mom andDad.” I think that says it all. Happy 235th Birthday Army!

With all of the rain and warmweather that comes with summer, we are surrounded by green. Gardens are sprouting up everywhere and it is prime timefor fresh produce and ingredients to makedelicious salads and other bold and flavorfuldishes. When you grow or buy local, freshingredients, you can really taste the difference. Buying local and growing even a

small garden also helps the environment byreducing the fuels required for packagingand transportation. Additionally, the flavorof something picked fresh from the gardenis unsurpassed.

With all of these ideas in mind, I asked Chef Bob to dig up some of his tastiest, fresh from the garden dishes tobring the outdoors in and the flavor of the

garden to the table. Spring and summervegetables offer an endless variety of foodideas that go far beyond the average salad.Chef Bob has given us some great ideas, but remember to think outside the box, taste the vegetables and use their flavors toyour advantage. After all, fresh is best!
